Wish It Were Sunday

Here is a rundown of skate spots located at landmarks named after Martin Luther King Jr. — though the most famous is the ledge spot in Miami and that got omitted. (Also! The benches have been knobbed for a decade-plus, but MLK High School on 66th and Amsterdam has the janky runway 13 that got tre flip’d in The HSS Video.)

“You trying to skate?
“Where you going?”
“We’re going to ConEd.”
Nah, I’m good.”

👆 This actually sounds like 90% of the conversations ever had about Con-Ed Banks. Congrats to Max Palmer for his Best Special Effects Oscar nomination, and to Max Hull for his Best Director nod!

Quartersnacks turns eleven years old today. Thank you everyone for the love throughout this now decade-plus. We’ll try not to blow it, at least for a few more years ;) Quotes over the Years postsPart 1, part 2, part 3.

Two posts related to yesterday: Remember and TWS on 9/11 from February 2002.

Call Me 917 has been teasing quick bits of footage from a recent midwest trip for their upcoming collaboration with Nike SB: one here and one there. The full thing supposed to drop on September 17th. And if you’re a person afraid of holding objects with printed words on them, someone on Slap scanned the Thrasher article about the trip.

“Do you like skating in New York?” “Not really.” #respect, me either tbh. Andrew Allen interviewed Aidan Mackey for Heaps Chat.

Byrdgang 2, the new one from the QS office’s favorite adolescent skateboard crew, is now live to remind all of us what skateboarding here in high school felt like.

Uploaded Max’s Sure part to YouTube just because.

It’s like a Goldfish reunion! Mike Carroll at the Santa Monica Courthouse.

Pretty sure this part is actually from the new Heroin video (could be wrong), but this Nick Michel “Losing Come Up Tour” part has a heavy focus on New York-based rock spots, including the blunt pop-in at Battery Park City from last week’s #QSTOP10.

Varial flip up, varial flip on flat, and varial flip down is is one of the more subversive moments for recent line choreography at the Chase two-up-five-down steps.

With early-2000s nostalgia still running high a la low-def noseslide tricks and the ressurection of the Pace Ledge, maybe kickflip shiftys are due for a comeback?

Switch back lip down Blubba and thirty more seconds of new Yaje footage.

Free Skate Mag interviewed Aesthetics Ryde or Die alumnus, Joey Pepper.

Who ever thought product description beef could be so interesting?

It feels like there have been five of these but oh well. Another Huf T.F. West jam clip.

Damn, Future is still pissed at Ciara? Has anyone ever rhymed “Soho” with something besides “Manolo?” Also, isn’t Ape Shit like a year late?

Johnny went HD. VX is [officially] dead. It was all good just a week ago.

The full story of how the Santa Monica Courthouse became a legal skate spot. Small banks restoration one day? Or does that make *too much* sense to ever happen?

Village Psychic has a #listicle of the ten best switch backside flips A.K.A. what Reynolds may or may not have once referred to as “the hardest trick.” It might be less of “the hardest trick” and more of the hardest trick to do well i.e. not have it horrendously barrel roll one inch off the ground to a standstill landing, thus discouraging anyone from publicly trying to get better at it.

Dudes in San Jose love khaki cargo shorts.

Rory Milanes is turning pro in 2020 when the Palace video comes out.

Enough with dudes skating in suits for videos filmed with fancy cameras. That shit was maybe cool once, and even that’s pushing it. With that being said, it is cool that Arto Saari got a pass to skate inside the Helsinki airport. You can file that under things that will never ever ever ever ever happen in the U.S.

The inventor of the tornado spin is still a leading quarterpipe innovator in 2014.

Somebody ollied the bump-to-bar at Wavy’s. (Not the best angle though.) He also grinded the Philly step before it. We might’ve had conversations about how Luis hypothetically wouldn’t even ollie that thing. We’re dumb.

Got to respect these guys for A) Basing ~75% of their “Summer Trip to New York” clip at the T.F. and South 5th monument plaza / proverbial Williamsburg T.F. and B) Not skating a single ledge over a foot in height throughout it.

Japan’s Rua Magazine has a video interview segment with Jahmal Williams from when he was out there for the Static IV premiere.

Billy Waldman is building an ark out of solar panels.

Quote of the Week
Observant Gentleman: “I wish I was fat so I could skate pools well.”
Alexander Mosley: “Fat people skate transition better, but there’s a lot you can do that they can’t. You’re not gonna see a fat person doing backside 180 nosegrinds.”

That Brooklyn Lockwood spot is allegedly harder to skate than actual Lockwood?

“Once upon a time I used to grind all night, with that residue that was iPod white.” Happy belated Thug Motivation 101 Day to everyone. Let’s get it.

Congratulations to everyone who was involved with this: Skateboarding at the Santa Monica Courthouse is now legal. A colossal step forward with how skateboarding is treated in America altogether. Small Banks restoration next? :)

Despite having literally no interest in the Life Extension video whatsoever, the running commentary at SMLTalk piqued the Quartersnacks Office’s interest. (Susan Sarandon is still sorta hot for 60+ btw.) And good thing it did. Pat Pasquale AKA Sinner’s part is INCREDIBLE. We’re talking Josh Kasper in The Storm meets Guy in Mouse meets 2001: A Space Odyssey meets Total Recall. It’s amazing.

Well that was quick: new Supreme mini video with all the “cherry” kids on the way. Sean Pablo also discusses it briefly in his new Vice interview.

The Skate Jawn four-year anniversary clip is a good time.

Speaking of good times, we have a frontrunner for 2014’s “feel good” part of the year. Cult favorite of apparently Kenny Anderson and anyone who grew up on Baker videos, Scott Kane stepped away from handrails and filmed a really fun comeback part.

Four-minute slideshow of the Palace crew in L.A. over on the TWS site.

Bill Strobeck posted up some Jake Johnson alternate angles / regular motion versions of tricks from the Mind Field days on his Instagram.

Now that the Beef Patty dudes are attending venues with bottle service, Video Blogs have occasionally morphed into HD “Instagram Direct” videos. Here’s the latest.

Boil the Ocean sorta talks about remaining pockets of shock value in skating.

Frontside 5050 back 180 out the ledge over ten at Grant’s Tomb and other good stuff in this dude John Shanahan’s part. That cellar door bank between the Citibike racks by EJ’s house is also way sketchier than footage could ever do it justice.

New clip from the Juicy Elbows crew. (#Trendwatch: “Sexual Healing” covers.)

Grinding curbs is not that extreme compared to rails.”

Alex Olson started a lil’ skate talk show called “Skate Wise” on Know Wave Radio. The first episode is on Soundcloud. It’s the talk show equivalent of a bunch of dudes sitting around on a couch ranting about skating after a session. No real format or try-hard radio personas, which is nice. “I love Ishod, Ishod is sick. Yeah, he drinks beer.”

2013 Q.S.S.O.T.Y, Leo Gutman, has a new jazz-tinged mini part for Acapulco Gold.

Frozen in Carbonite on the custom, 1-of-1 Sal 23 Nike SB Dunk Low colorway. “I’m not sure if I’m going to skate them or just stunt around for the summer. In any event, as you can imagine, they pair well with Light-Ass Denim.™”

Jason Dill: Post-Mindfield and pre-“cherry” remix video.

Keelan Dadd? No disrespect to anyone listed, but the #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Epicly Later’d that “needs” to happen is Muska. #10 is Sheffey.

Video blog #211 from the Beef Patty guys, with some block-long Max Palmer lines.

Here’s the Richmond, VA-based Recordings of Boardings video, Off the Record. The RAW VIDEO was online all weekend, but got taken down and is now only available for preorder in hard copy form. Based on one viewing of that project, Boston seems to be one of the final east coast refuges for jean shorts. Could the Celtics be in the market for a Josh Harrellson acquisition?

After seeing one in Static 4, and another one in this Capita Skateboards clip, it might be time to officially place frontside 5050 backside 360 outs on 2014’s #trendwatch. Also could happily spend the remainder of human existence without hearing another Big L or Wu-Tang song in a skate video, but Redman might forever have a pass :)

The all-subway skating section from Tengu is now on YouTube. Shout out M.N.M.F.T.B.

They’re trying to make make the Santa Monica Courthouse a legal skate spot. Of course, it involves skateboarders being patient, not stupid, etc, so there’s an uphill climb ahead. America is utter garbage for skateboarding, btw #eurowithdrawl.

The security guards at that new pop over rail by the 7th Avenue banks are going to have a fun summer. P.S. They’re already reknobbing the ledges at Seaport 5.0.

QS Sports Desk: Melo’s opting out. Who cares.
