Deep Dive — Diego Todd on Ventura & ‘Hockey X’

Traversing the same streets countless times, over years and years, only to discover a hidden in-plain-sight new way of skating them is a well-understood skateboard phenomenon.

Diego Todd’s closing part in Hockey X was the result of combing his beachside hometown of Ventura, California in such a way.

Equipped with an attitude reminiscent of the goofball savant from a coming-of-age movie, Diego ducked down familiar streets for new takes and ticked off spots which had sat in the back of his mind since before he even had a driver’s license.

Our latest Deep Dive lifts the curtain on the local folklore and perilous spots tackled by Diego in the part that turned him pro.

“That could have been me.” The Guardian spoke to several Black skateboarders — including our dear friend Aaron Wiggs, along with Harold Hunter Foundation chair + architect of The Black List, Patrick Kigongo — about their experiences in the shadow of Tyre Nichols’ murder at the hands of police.

“Yeah! At Glendale High!” Farran Golding had Nelly Morville talk over her Paymaster part about how the Limosine connection came to be + filming for their inaugural video.

Columbus Circle continues to enjoy its reign as the spot of the winter: Christian Kerr just dropped an edit with a days’ worth of Columbus footage, and yes, you get to see Gabe Tennen shred in it! It’s a foregone conclusion someone is going to drop a one-spot part from there by May, right?

The Say You Swear podcast interviewed Naquan Rollings — one of the most prolific videographers today — with guest commentary from Father Bop throughout.

“You’re a smart person. Smart people get uncomfortable couches.” Village Psychic posted up part two of Lurker Lou and Mark Suciu’s journey through lesser-known Bronx spots.

Time On Our Hands is a full-length New York video from Abi Teixeira featuring many familiar faces, great make-you-wanna-skate-with-your-friends vibes, and some good tunes. Decent bit of Brianna Delaney footage, too :)

Krooked’s “Don’t Stop Featuring Una Farrar” dropped just as the Thrasher staff clocked out of the office last Friday. Basically an Una part + cameos from the rest of the team, Frank Gerwer bringing tre shuvs back, and the first official bits of Andrew Wilson footy in a Krooked project :)

Deep Dive — Dick Rizzo & Paul Young on Hi8 and East Coast Influences

The shared output of Dick Rizzo and Paul Young is cine-literature — one with touch points and tributes surrounding many of what we could call “heritage” east coast texts.

We touched on exactly that in regards to the pair’s Hi8 Half Cab project for Vans last summer. However, we took the investigation further, digging through the tapes and speaking to both Richie and Paul about the nuance, folklore, cellar doors and sessions with Uncle Freddy that underwrite their ode to what came before.
