Watermelonism Premiere: Dos Sandias (2008)

In 2008, Dos Sandias premiered on a VX2000 LCD screen in front of the Fish to a captivated audience. (For those who may not know, a VX2000 screen is about half the size of an iPhone screen.) It was one of the best premieres ever, trumping the other box office-dominating cinematic event from the same weekend. DVD copies were sold through Autumn, 2nd Nature and this website, but — much like its predecessor, The Watermelon Video — many never got a chance to see it.

Watermelonism.com is selling a special run of Dos Sandias boards and tees to go along with the online premiere of the video, and to commemorate a special time for skateboarding in New York, especially for our group of friends. It was when a lot of the principal people in the first QS clip were still skating regularly, and before a lot of the people who are good at skateboarding moved here ;)

Dos Sandias features appearances from Alexander Mosley (in perhaps the only video part to be filmed entirely in Jordans?), Miles Marquez, Ty Lyons, T-Bird, Mike Gigliotti, Matt Mooney, Brian Brown, Doug Brown, Lurker Lou, Jose Pereyra, Jake Johnson, and Ben Nazario. 20. Houston Street Construction Becomes the New Bank to Green Box

The first installment of this series concluded with a list of 2013’s best spots. Astute readers of QS should know that it reflected office favorites, and not all-encompassing New York skater favorites. We don’t ollie down what we cannot ollie up; professionals and “good” skateboarders abide by a far different creed. Last year, visitors were enamored with the green metal ledge in Harlem, until it mysteriously vanished in January. (Everyone was sick of seeing tricks on that thing anyway.)

Scrambling to find a fresh New York spot that would prove to sponsors that “I didn’t just get drunk and make out with girls with shitty tattoos the entire time I was there,” good skateboarders did what they do best: like, saw the world differently, dude. And so, you couldn’t sit for a minute on the Houston steps this past summer without seeing a pack of skateboarders cruise past, with their filmer towing a hundred-pound backpack ten feet behind them. With yesterday’s release of the new Zoo York vid, companies began an outpour of footage on obstacles that are otherwise the bane of every lower Manhattan driver’s existence.

Boil the Ocean on DGK’s Parental Advisory video “picking up where the Menace video that would never come left off in Trilogy.”

Adidas just won the “Summer Trip to New York” web clip game with their August 2012 venture. It includes Busenitz, Lucas Puig, Jake Donnelly (with the best crusty ledge back smith since Anthony Correa), and Pete Eldridge giving tobacco companies their best advertising in years with an awesome late-night Sixth Avenue line. In an unexpected turn of events, Mark Suciu even figured out a new way to skate the Courthouse. It would be nice to see a full-length video from this roster.

Matt Mooney owns a computer again and he put together a Tompkins / Autumn / 12th & A clip, largely filmed while seated at the comfort of the T.F. bench.

Billy Rohan, when he loses his mind, he starts talking about Wu-Tang.” ESPN has a article about how skateboarders love Wu-Tang that perhaps unintentionally hints at how many have cocooned themselves away from rap music released since Liquid Swords. Skateboarding/Wu-Tang is an interesting subject that could be explored in greater depth than “skaters like raw shit!” i.e. Wu-Tang was actually once a skate company or Gino (in general.) And for the record, pretty sure a bunch of us yelled at someone for cutting off Dreamchasers at House of Vans last year so they could hear 36 Chambers for the billionth time. (Forever > 36 Chambers. Frat boys ruined 36.)

Another round of mostly Manhattan-set Death Video throwaways.

Fred Gall, Jahmal Williams, Ricky Oyola and Joel Meinholz went into the woods of New England for Labor Day with a bunch of guns and somehow, no accidents happened. The photo of Oyola shooting a gun will probably be Photoshopped a million different ways and re-posted all over Slap and Tumblr by the end of the week.

Torey Pudwill skates his first cellar door. It’s for Red Bull, so there’s some jock narration in there. The bump to smith grind and the flatground backside flip on the bike path are tight though. Cameos from Zered Bassett and Quentin Tolentino.
