TRENDWATCH 2012: $1,000 Griptape

Notable dreamboat pro skateboarder and recent refugee of Quiksilver downsizing, Alex Olson, is the first name attached to two French fashion houses’ testing-of-waters in the griptape market. This past weekend, Olson leaked several shots of team edition griptape from both Chanel and LVMH subsidiary, Céline on Instagram. He has reportedly been receiving boxes from both companies, so details as to which brand he will sign under remain foggy, though one of the photos did state “Chanel grip is better than the Céline grip,” making it safe to assume Chanel is offering the better contract and/or a superior product. Interestingly enough, Mike Carroll left a comment saying “Need” under the Chanel shot, leading industry insiders to believe that Carroll and Olson will soon be announced as Chanel’s first two teamriders. One would hope that the addition of a native French rider (Puig? J.B?) is not far away.

Chanel’s grip is expected to retail for around ~$1,000 at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, Supreme, and flagship Chanel locations worldwide. No word on Céline’s price point, though most assume it will be in a similar range. Naturally, one of the photos included a comment from someone who has no idea what a “hipster” is asking, “Now there’s griptape hipsters?” Pabst and Chanel don’t mix, bro. Get your caricatures straight.

Spike Lee Need To Get This Shit On Film

As if Matt Mooney getting busted for the croissant heist of the century after tweeting about it wasn’t enough, here’s further evidence that you should avoid social media after committing idiotic hilarious “crimes.”

Chris Nieratko interviews the judges, skaters, and producer from this year’s mess of a One in a Million series. What are skateboarders who spend an unhealthy amount of time typing YouTube comments going to complain about now? (Full QS interview with Lurker Lou coming this week or next at the latest. Weather has been nice, so transcribing/editing has been slow.)

Called it. Lil’ Wayne inks an endorsement deal with Supra. (Original post here.)

Here’s a New York-based “Day in the Life” clip with Danny Supa. More “lifestyle” stuff than actual skating, but the song makes it great. Any skate clips edited to a song off AZ’s first few albums are more or less guaranteed a link here — maybe even that Tyrone Olson part where he skates to “Sugar Hill.”

Someone is making a documentary about Harry Jumonji. The interviews in the trailer seem real honest and unfiltered, so it definitely has the potential to be great. Watch the trailer here.

Andre Page flatground lines at the T.F., Hawaiian shirts, strobe lights, and an avoidance of the most notorious line off that “Ass” song, all in this GoPro clip.

The VHS aesthetic continues with Twomanji, a video whose description boasts the revitalization of laserdiscs.

Some new photos over on the Dunions Tumblr, including one that solves the mystery of what happens to Tompkins’ legendary cones. (A dog ate them. No, really.)

KCDC temporarily moved to 68 N. 3rd for the summer. It’s still off the Bedford stop, but a bit further west than before (closer to the bridge, as well.)

FOR THE 21.3% OF QS READERSHIP THAT FOLLOWS SPORTS: In commemoration of the regular NBA season ending this week, here are JaVale McGee’s top eight dumbest plays. The most entertaining player in the league, but not in a Derrick Rose sort of way. We’re eternally grateful that he got traded to a playoff team, because it means at least an extra week of this.

Call My Accountant, He Gonna Make It Do Magic

Is this a photo from the T.F. or an unseen production still from City of God?

Last week, Skateboarder ran a “25 Questions” feature with #PhatStylez co-founder, Jack Sabback. Ice coffee, switch shove-its, and Commodore nachos are all chill.

Bill Pierce’s part from the KCDC video is now online. The Juicy J skate part is still heavily trending in 2012. (Loosely related: “Girls who like Juicy J are the worst.” — Matt Mooney.) You can find some other parts from the video here.

Due to the song, this clip is a mandatory post. Hard to tell where it’s based out of, but the description was astute enough to acknowledge the song’s best line, so it doesn’t matter.

Jereme Rogers A.K.A. J.R. Blastoff was spotted at Tompkins and interviewed on a variety of subjects: making the world a better place, Audemars, “raising human consciousness,” Honda Civics being the dirty white tee shirts of cars, and Lurker Lou not saying “Hi” to him.

Principal QS shareholder, Alexander Mosley, has been living in Puerto Rico for the past half-year. He has a line in the middle of this Mayagüez skate plaza clip.

That short loading dock to cellar door bank spot on Canal and Washington Street is gone. They removed the bank. Watch Jose Pereyra’s part from the 2008 2nd Nature video because he has an ender on it.

New wooden bench spot downtown. It sucks, but people are still going to skate it.

Weird. The 11th and Wythe Street ledge turned into a hotel.

‘Best sneakers worn in a skate photo’

“Best sneakers worn in a skate photo. Bar hop in Jordan 4s. Billy Rohan used to wear them too, but his were fake.” — Matt Mooney

All the Menace Epicly Later’d episodes are sick, especially the Fabian Alomar one, but it would’ve been great to get a full Steven Cales episode. Read his 48 Blocks interview instead.

The story behind that was that I was at a bar and Monica Lewinsky was there. They used to have stars in there – it was in New York. From skating and going out since I was little, I had friends in the party world that would run the doors and we would just walk in. It was cool cause they wouldn’t let your average person up in there even though I’m average. Anyway, I was with Peter Bici that day and he had a camera. I happened to have beef with this kid that was in this party, right. I was sitting next to this girl, her name was Cameran Manheim – she was in The Practice. That was Monica Lewinsky’s friend, they were together. So, I go and sit down next to them and Peter snaps the photo. So that’s how that photo came out. After that I got up cause the guy I had trouble with came to me and we just started fighting. We shut that place down, everybody was running out – I was fighting and then all my other friends were fighting too. They put it in the Daily News, “Monica Lewinsky Bar Room Brawl!” E TV and all that shit was there the next day interviewing people. I was scared because I was on parole. I didn’t want to go to the media and be like “hey this was because of me.” Anyway, Peter gave me the photo and I shopped that motherfucker around. I went to Russell Simmons – he had a magazine, their pay was too low so I was like “nah I’m out of here.” I flew to Cali and went to Keenan’s house and was skating with Gino and all them. I went to the National Enquirer. First I went to Star Magazine, but their pay was kind of cheap – so I was like “nah, I’m going to the National Enquirer, last one.” Their pay was all right you know, so I just sold the picture, got the check, and was happy!

Stevie Wonder, Stevie Wonder…

Unidentifiable QS member caught at a rendezvous in front of the Strip Club Ledge with a short young lady, proceeding a wild night at Westway. In other socialite gossip, Quartersnacks might have the highest volume of OK Cupid members on its roster compared to any other skate crew. Guess which three and win a date with Matt Mooney.

We’ve been away for the better half of two weeks (no Monday links last week), so some of these may not be so new to those that have spent the past two weeks on the internet…

Missing Persons is a sick little New York based video, with a jazzy retro vibe and some solid local skating. Originally only released on VHS, but now available on YouTube in full. You already know that there is nothing held in a higher regard than night footage within the Quartersnacks Book of Aesthetic Guidelines, so give it a whirl before you leave the house for a late session.

Paulgar recently dropped a seven minute digi-cam clip featuring Brian Delatorre, Ted Barrow, and others.

Steve Nash skates to the ball courts in Battery Park every morning to practice his shot. Those sound like real wheels too, not soft cruiser wheels. Can we please figure out a way for this dude to finish his career off in New York? Or better yet, a (non-Miami) team with an actual chance to win a title in the next three years? No other NBA vet deserves a ring more.

The Washington Mutual / Grand and Graham spot in Williamsburg is done for. The bank installed rails in front of the two inclines. They saved a wall in a parking lot from getting black marks on it…what a great use of money. Spotted via Hella Trill.

Transition skater mastermind, Corey Rubin half skating, half modeling tee shirts at the new bank sculpture over at Bowery Stadium.

An interview with one of Queens’ finest skateboarders, Joseph Delgado, discussing Queens nostalgia, sidewalks, and the infamous Remedy video.

Santa Cruz hopped on the oddly-shaped cruiser wave, and put out a set of Simpsons character cruiser boards. Just wait until Nexus of the Universe (Quartersnacks’ Seinfeld-themed skateboard company) releases an introductory Todd Gack pro model. Lomez, Brody, and Bob Sacamano pro models out in the fall.
