In Continued Trust Of Crust — Dan Ryuichi’s ‘Roughers Connective’ Video

There is something refreshing about a great video appearing from seemingly nowhere.

Dan Ryuichi’s “Roughers Connective” edit is the only video on his YouTube page. It popped up in Thrasher‘s Junk Drawer on Monday, and at press time, still has under 1,000 views. It has a couple recognizable names, even fewer recognizable spots, and it earned the immediate runback treatment as soon as its ten minutes were up — something rare in the social media age.

The video’s spiritual predecessors are the NJ classic, In Crust We Trust, and its all-Newark follow-up, Brick City Street Styles (maybe with a bit of Bruns sprinkled in.) It opens with an all-Trenton, NJ section and closes with an all-Newark one, while its middle kicks around everywhere else between New Jersey’s capital and its largest city. The stars of the show are Soma Sugiyama and Sergio Rodas, with contributions from Akobi Williams, Caroline Duerr, Anthony Gordon and others.

Closer has an extended cut of Louie Lopez’s footy via last year’s F.A. sesh at Tompkins, along with an excerpt from the interview Farran did with him.

Paul Young has a new video on the way starring Ben Tenner (that flick on the kickflip noseslide!) and Joe Russo. Hate that we’re already thinking about 2023 though.

Our friends at Andrew Skateshop in Miami got a feature in Vogue.

#QSTOP10 — June 10, 2022

We usually try to reserve the one-video episodes to the smaller companies — Limosine, Bronze, Sour (yeah, Baker got an exception.)

A two-minute recap of a video that got 300k views in five days and was all that got shared on skateboard social media for 72 hours isn’t the most #onbrand way to use this weekly space (even though a third of y’all only clicked around that thing), so had to throw in some selections from the underdogs.

Please be sure to watch the Ninetimes video (a nice reminder that “Feds in Town” is a goat-level song), and the Jimmy video out of Texas.

Have a good one.

‘A Canvas For the Psyche’ — The Politics of Griptape in Skateboarding

Intro + Interviews by Frozen in Carbonite
Illustrations by Requiem For A Screen

I’ll never forget the wildest grip job I ever saw.

At the local park, this dude had clear grip with a collage of pornographic photos underneath. This raised a few questions. First, where the hell does one still buy physical pornographic magazines?

Next, the why. Did this particular pastiche of photography stoke him out like nothing else? Were these women his muses, like a current-day version of those paintings on WWII bombers and shit?

Maybe he needed to look at naked ladies 24/7.

ANYWAY, you may have noticed a plethora of new griptape brands sprouting up in the past year. Griptape is the one skateboard component we are in contact with (visual and/or tactile) almost 100% of the time. Just like Narcissus stared into his reflection until he died or turned into a flower or whatever, we stare at our griptape until the deck eventually dies — either broken or devoid of pop. It also functions as a canvas onto which one can project one’s psyche: the serenity of plain black, an inside joke, or a call to arms.

Skaters reserve some of their most hardcore gear opinions for this seemingly innocuous piece of sandpaper. With all this in mind, we present the The Politics of Griptape.

Skaters Set Eyes on Hell-like Planet That Rains Lava at Night

Photo via @whatisnewyork

Rest in Peace, New York City payphones ❤️

Why go to Greece like all the other skate crews, when you can go to a hell-like planet that rains lava in the night footy? (Nah, jk – Greece is pretty dope.)

We’re up to 80 spots! Just added Dustin Eggeling’s “Reggaeton” part for Village Psychic (as in…the ledges, not the music genre) to the QS One-Spot Part Map. Includes guest tricks from Kyler Garrison, Brian Scherer + Keith Denley.

Frankie Decker talks Vegas, late shuvs, and the “Evan Frankie” ender in his new interview for Heckride. (Does anyone remember what edit the backside flip down the Canal and Division set at the Manhattan Bridge is?)
