A Conversation With Rowan Zorilla About Baseball & The Double Set

Two weekends back, we sent our L.A. correspondent, Adam Abada, to the skater baseball game hosted by Rowan Zorilla and Vans. (Yes, this means that over a few short months, we sent one of the guys who skated from Boston to New York in 2013 to cover a skater basketball game, and the other guy to cover a skater baseball game.)

It was one of those media-heavy events when many of our colleagues were all vying for their share of Rowan’s time, so we couldn’t dive as deep as we would have liked to, but we covered two subjects most important to the QS office.

Saturday morning — or afternoon, rather — I woke up in a Hyatt Regency on King Street in downtown Toronto. My forehead had a lump. At the foot of the bed were yesterday’s blood-soaked socks. I read texts through one eye as I tongued a chipped front tooth that I swore was perfectly fine a day ago.

As a family, we moved every couple of years because my dad was a college basketball coach. He was an agent for a second, then coached the Harlem Globetrotters for two years, went on to scout for the NBA for a while, and now, he’s an assistant coach for the NBA G-League Ignite, a team without a hometown, constructed to serve the NBA’s development league and currently stationed in Henderson, Nevada. They had the most picks out of any single organization at this year’s NBA Draft. It’s kinda cool and pretty weird.

It appears we have a clear frontrunner for a top slot on 2023’s year-end accolades: Zach Sayles uploaded Matt Militano’s part from Veil over the long weekend. Everything from cellar door wizardry (the wallride to slappy crook on the brick window-sill…) to extended Muni choreography to the physics-defying ender cements this one up there in contention with Curren, Mason, and… who else?

W O W: Solo interviewed Darude about “Sandstorm” and his feelings about it becoming the official anthem of the Dime Glory Challenge. He’s a skater! Truly is heartwarming when worlds harmoniously collide like this; it’s like Ed Bacon skating Love Park-level of beautiful.
