A Quarter Century

We obvs don’t know every skate crew in the country, but from a mediated standpoint, it’s hard to think of a crew as aggressively productive as Duplex. The fact that they do it all just off Saturdays and Sundays is INSANE. Our buddy Greg Navarro flew down to Florida to tag along with them and document how it all gets done for Thrasher‘s new “Lifers” series.

Bronze 56k dropped an edit to push their NB# shoe, starring Jordan Trahan, Shaun Paul and Marcello Campanello — with a cameo by the venerable William McFeely. Huge year for hitting Flushing in the snow.

The South Beach Macy’s ledge ranks as something that — despite walking past it every Miami trip ever — we’re perfectly ok never skating. But Zoogie and the crew always get the most out of this innocuous high, beveled ledge with no end. Wolff’s ender is dope.

“Type III Fun” is a new, all-NYC video by John Lamair featuring the youngs hucking into rocks, going back for that white marble drop-in at World Trade that everyone gets washed on, and being shocked by their own inward heelflips. Great vibes the whole way through ✨

“I got an 8.25. I got Zeroes in the car!” A watershed moment for Village Psychic’s “Lurking With Lou” series: 14 years (!!!!!!!!) after Lurker Lou allegedly ruined Matt Millitano’s life by focusing his board on Slap’s One In A Million show [according to the internet], they link up to sesh spots outside of New York skateboarding’s oft-treaded zones. Joke’s on the internet, because they were friends the whole time. Also, even as someone who has known Lou for a long time, I completely took for granted that he was 28 in that show. Beards, man.

Kiernan McGinnis has a new part out for Grey Skate Mag that’s largely filmed in Philly. The control on that bank-to-rail kickflip back fifty is too good. And if you missed the nollie backside flip at the Lily Pads [R.I.P.] from last weeks’ top ten, it’s worth a loop or ten.

If you count everything in the Thrasher Junk Drawer, ten full-length videos, plus another handful of solo parts and edits came out in August 2023. We’ve come to expect that sort of programming when marketing teams try to get a thumb on the scale during the S.O.T.Y. race, but the end of summer has traditionally been a much less productive time of year for skateboarding.

At least until this year.

Lakai’s Bubble, Pass~Port’s “Trinket,” and Johnny’s Vid all came out in the same week. Palace’s Beta Blockers and WKND’s Rumble Pack came out on the same day, creating a nineties skater version of the meme about how eating a bag of Takis would overwhelm and kill a child from the 19th century.

What are the chances? How did it happen? And did anybody realize what was coming down the pipeline? I called a handful of skaters and filmers who worked on the projects that were released that month to find out why it was so stacked, and how it felt to navigate the spotlight.

The Good Times of Yesterday, Today — Pangea Jeans & John Shanahan’s ‘ROADRAGE’ Video

The old proverb goes something like, “Yeah, now well, the thing about the old days is… they the old days.”

Yet for all the handwringing that gets done about things changing and spots disappearing, there sure are a lot of remaining markers of the old days for nostalgia exercises. Take for instance “ROADRAGE,” the new edit from John Shanahan’s Pangea Jeans imprint, filmed on the same camera they probably filmed Real’s Non Fiction video on in 1996. In it, you’ll find the Battery Park three-stair that Gino nollie back heeled in The Chocolate Tour (with a Las Nueve Vidas De Paco-looking nollie backside flip floating down it.) The Greenwich Street windowsill ledges where Harold Hunter did the sweaty backside heelflip at! Tricks at the upper portion of Pyramid Ledges! The L.A. Department of Water and Power Building! The past is — at a bare minimum — thriving.
