The Best Skate Videos & Parts of 2022 — QS Readers Poll Results

It seems that the impossible has happened: we’ve tallied a QS Readers Poll, and there’s no Tom Knox in sight 😲😲😲

All jokes aside, beyond light output from Mr. Knox in 2022, this is perhaps the year that the multiple part approach wielded by S.O.T.Y. hopefuls began to adapt itself to people’s recollections of the past twelve months. Whereas in past years, when multiple releases tended to split the vote in clear favor of one over another, 50% of this year’s Top 20 parts are from the same five people.

Also worth noting that the point spread between slot #14 and slot #10 for single parts was four points. Maybe we introduce a runoff feature next year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The #1 video was a landslide.

Round Three — Tyshawn Jones’ King Skateboards Part

The third act of Tyshawn’s run to be the third dude to ever win S.O.T.Y. twice (the only other two being Danny Way in 1991 and 2004 + Chris Cole 2005 and 2009) went live today, this time for his new brand, King Skateboards.

Whether you’re clocking the S.O.T.Y. race like that or not, you gotta appreciate the second midtown 360 flip this week done over something that otherwise has an A.B.D. scroll you can count on one hand: here over the rail on 33rd and 3rd, and in Play Dead on the Brick 9 gap, which might’ve only been ollied altogether.

Shout out to skating to Jay-Z in the part that dropped on Monday, and “Ether” in a part that dropped on Friday. Life’s all about keeping a balance.

Writing in 2019, when “cherry” snagged the top spot in QS Readers Poll results for best videos of the 2010s (voting for this year’s opens soon!), Boil the Ocean remarked “that it is easy to forget the gamble that “cherry” represented roughly one eternity ago.” The gamble clearly worked, and “BLESSED” felt like a result of the creative blank check a film studio gives out when someone’s first feature breaks expectations.
