VOTE FOR FREDDY

It’s that time of year when people who don’t pay attention to skateboard competitions start discussing the X-Games, or at least their “core”-targeting “Real Street” segments. Everyone from D.C. is going to tell you to vote for Bobby Worrest. Everyone from New England is going to tell you to vote for Joey Pepper. Every person who only owns brown pants is going tell you to vote for Silas Baxter-Neal. Everyone under the age of 13 is going to vote for Nyjah Huston, who’s going to win anyway, since little kid favorites tend to win these things.

Naturally, we’re going to tell you to vote for the Governor of New Jersey, Fred Gall. He’s bracketed (isn’t it funny how skateboarders used to be all “Sports are lame! Screw the rules, bro! No rules!” and now they’re filling out brackets for “Battle of the Berrics” and “Real Street?”) against Jaws, who essentially jumps off of buildings for a straight minute. Fred Gall jumps onto moving buses, so vote and help him win some money for newly-sober-related pursuits.

WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT WALKING IN THE GUCCI STORE AND THEY SALUTE?

It’s no secret that the internet has conspired to kill off the full-length skate video these past few years. But an enterprising real world minority continues to fight back, as evidenced by a few “Hey, could you post the promo for my video?” e-mails in the Quartersnacks inbox every week. It probably doesn’t take much to get your promo posted as a Monday link — just a front shove or two, a few awful spots, and no music by quirky indie bands. However, if you want a promo featured, well, then you’ll probably need to make a clip that involves a 2 Chainz feature somewhere (currently maybe one of five rappers worth putting up with a minute of Kanye for.)

The homie BJ Wishard sent over this promo clip for his Jersey/NY-based video, Feelin’ Friendly, due out next month. Subscribe on YouTube to stay updated, and for more videos. The video has full parts from Nico Magalhaes, Chris Rozborski, Brian Shroeder, Dillon Constantine, Matt Eaton, Nick Immediato, and Eric Dermond. Clip features German Nieves, Matt Eaton, Adrian Vega, Bill Marshall, BJ Wishard, Chris Rozborski, Derek Nawrocki, Joe Gore, Chris Murray, Nate Fantasia, Dan Vogedes, John Cruz, Joe Scordo, Nick Immediato, Tyler Hart, Sean Barone, Joey Boulliane, Eric Dermond, and Nico Magalhaes.

Those rocks on Water Street are an actual spot now, huh?

Brian Wenning – Circa 2011

“We’re not out here acting like we drive Ferraris and shit…Buy American, baby!”

At least 20% of the content that appears on QS relates back to Photosynthesis somehow, considering that’s when the majority of the people involved here started skating. Therefore, this Epicly Later’d-ish catch-up segment with Brian Wenning is somewhat of a must-post. It should come as no surprise to anyone, but Wenning is completely done with professional skateboarding, and off Selfish. It’s still hard to tell whether or not Selfish was ever a real company, or just made up to start arguments on message boards. He has the newest Transworld laying on the table in one of the shots, so this is definitely recent.

It’d be great to see Wenning follow in the footsteps of The Great Governor of New Jersey, and reinvent himself into a second, more heavy-set life as a pro skateboarder, but the dude seems pretty over it. The deliberately depressing mood of the clip (completely music-less, and filmed in the most barren possible portion of a “hell hole” known as New Jersey) doesn’t help either. Interesting that the comments on YouTube for his DC Video intro hint at some sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Wish the dude all the best either way, lord knows hundreds of kids in New Jersey started (and hopefully still are) skating because of him.

On a more uplifting note…be sure to check out the ten-minute Lynyrd Skynyrd re-edit someone rigged of all Wenning’s footage earlier this year.

When you’re in the club and you see me – High five!

The block said, ‘Dro you need to drop.’ Well, here it go…

Attempting to out-do the infamous MTA montage, the Mandible Claw crew put out a “Rush Hour” clip centered around skitching, and skating on motor vehicles. Considering there are no Jackie Chan or Chris Tucker cameos, they should’ve just named this “Arrest me, please.” Cops seem pretty content to kick people’s asses for no real reason these days, so God bless Colin and the rest of the crew for risking themselves for our entertainment.

The underground king of Queens, Rob Campbell, has a new “Day in the Life” clip up for his company, New Breed skateboards.

Will skateboarders ever get tired of editing things to songs from Jeru the Damaja’s first album? Probably not. Back tail stall at the Bubble Banks is real sick though, and Future’s debut album, Pluto, drops on 01/31/12.

In an effort to remedy “soft music” criticisms stemming from their first throwaway clip, the “Death Video” crew called upon the services of Cameron Giles and put out an “ignorant edit” promo. Why would anyone want to ollie off that small hut at the Queensboro Bridge downhill ledges?

Late, but insane: You apparently cannot skate the Thomas Greene Park spot (a place designated built for skateboarding) unless you are accompanying a small child. Good to know that the NYPD has its priorities in order when it comes to Brooklyn.

Events: 1) If you’re into art and stuff, the Gonz is having an exhibition of photos and illustrations from the past year starting tomorrow and lasting through January 7. 2) The Shake Junt video premieres at KCDC this Sunday. 3) Jeremy Elkin’s new, NYC-based video, Poisonous Products premieres tomorrow at 74A East 4th Street at 8:30 P.M. Flyer here.

Spot Updates: 1) Who’s the genius that decided to knob the ledges — yes, the ledges — at Brick Nine? “Why are they still skating here? I thought they were supposed to stop skating?” 2) You obviously can’t skate World Trade anymore because of the protests, but Chase is also blocked off on account of them.

Quote of the Week: “Yo, Chinatown is crazy. I feel like I’m in Tokyo.” — E.J.

P.S. People in Jersey are real smart. Well, maybe not as smart as this guy.

P.P.S. Payless has a knock-off of the Dylan Gravis shoe on sale for $13.

A Year of Holmes & Co.

Jersey Mane…he walk up in the club and his chain say “goodnight!” — Photo by Jason Lecras

When you make Jersey Dave a promise to post a video clip, you keep it. Otherwise, it results in years of bad luck, as he has strange, karma-altering powers that we will never understand. This promo was filmed and edited by Justin White (with a select few contributors) to honor Jersey City’s finest skateboard sales institution, Holmes & Co., and its first full year of existence. They are located on 203 Brunswick Street in Jersey City (201 332 3322 / Shopatholmes.com), so you should definitley stop by sometime if you need a new skateboard or some fresh Polo gear for a big Friday night of popping bottles with Jersey Mane himself.
