Spike Lee Need To Get This Shit On Film

As if Matt Mooney getting busted for the croissant heist of the century after tweeting about it wasn’t enough, here’s further evidence that you should avoid social media after committing idiotic hilarious “crimes.”

Chris Nieratko interviews the judges, skaters, and producer from this year’s mess of a One in a Million series. What are skateboarders who spend an unhealthy amount of time typing YouTube comments going to complain about now? (Full QS interview with Lurker Lou coming this week or next at the latest. Weather has been nice, so transcribing/editing has been slow.)

Called it. Lil’ Wayne inks an endorsement deal with Supra. (Original post here.)

Here’s a New York-based “Day in the Life” clip with Danny Supa. More “lifestyle” stuff than actual skating, but the song makes it great. Any skate clips edited to a song off AZ’s first few albums are more or less guaranteed a link here — maybe even that Tyrone Olson part where he skates to “Sugar Hill.”

Someone is making a documentary about Harry Jumonji. The interviews in the trailer seem real honest and unfiltered, so it definitely has the potential to be great. Watch the trailer here.

Andre Page flatground lines at the T.F., Hawaiian shirts, strobe lights, and an avoidance of the most notorious line off that “Ass” song, all in this GoPro clip.

The VHS aesthetic continues with Twomanji, a video whose description boasts the revitalization of laserdiscs.

Pro skaters giving back to the community, one worn-out ledge at a time.

Some new photos over on the Dunions Tumblr, including one that solves the mystery of what happens to Tompkins’ legendary cones. (A dog ate them. No, really.)

KCDC temporarily moved to 68 N. 3rd for the summer. It’s still off the Bedford stop, but a bit further west than before (closer to the bridge, as well.)

Bill Strobeck recommends some music over on The World’s Best Ever for people who don’t mind playlists that exclude Meek Mill. Oh, and Dreamchasers 2 comes out Monday, May 7th.

R.I.P. Os Dias Do Video, the internet’s leading destination for pirated skate videos.

FOR THE 21.3% OF QS READERSHIP THAT FOLLOWS SPORTS: In commemoration of the regular NBA season ending this week, here are JaVale McGee’s top eight dumbest plays. The most entertaining player in the league, but not in a Derrick Rose sort of way. We’re eternally grateful that he got traded to a playoff team, because it means at least an extra week of this.

Lil’ Wayne buys majority ownership in Skatepark of Tampa for $9.3 million.

Galen Dekemper reviews Chity, a new independent video that recently came out of Chicago. You can watch the trailer for it here, and purchase the DVD via its Big Cartel page. Be sure to follow the crew’s Blogspot as well. “I feel like these guys kick it with girls who go to music shows.”

The cutthroat nature of New York’s growing dollar-slice industry continues to reach newfound heights of absurdity, this time with 75-cent slices. Being a broke-ass skateboarder sure is easy in 2012. Maybe Universal News will soon re-instate the $2 sandwich and a soda deal…

Watch the official Palace for Umbro launch video, and read the accommodating mini-interview about the project over at Dazed Digital.

Some HD raw footage log files: West Village to East Village session, anywhere but Tompkins.

Was going to make a joke last week about there being a new place to skate rocks over at the former S-Gap, but it seems like people already figured that one out (consult the 1:05 mark.)

TRENDWATCH 2012 ALERT: Bulky headphone sightings have been reported in various unexpected locations, most notably in Poland. Is it safe to assume that Poland is the only place where people get away with nollie heelflip body varials? (Thanks to Nico for the tip.)

Rob Campbell and friends at the Chelsea Park in this new clip for New Breed.

Black Dave on police brutality, Trayvon Martin, and other subjects in his latest video, “Public Enemy.” Black Donald Trump for president 2012.

This may be old news, since people don’t skate there often and it took a while to notice, but you can’t skate the downhill curved ledge at the Guggenheim anymore. They fastened light fixtures to the top of it. Not the most popular spot, but definitely the best ledge there.

Someone mashed up a bunch of movie scenes shot in bodegas into one Vimeo clip.

The Brooklyn Nets are likely destined for second-class status in this city like the other two franchises ending with -ets, and current-day Jay-Z might be easy to ignore, but shout out to him for using a Reasonable Doubt album cut and not some Watch the Throne garbage in this Marcy to Barclays commercial.

P.S. Want a long read about how screwed you are? Enjoy.

The *Real* KONY

What’s with this sudden spike of interest in King of New York? Does the guy responsible for the Total Recall remake with Colin Farrell have a vendetta against all great movies from 1990, and is he considering a King of New York remake next, with Jake Gyllen Halal in Christopher Walken’s role, and Terry Kennedy in his big-screen debut instead of Laurence Fishburne? What does this have to do with anything? Linsanity is over (clearly), so we’re running on empty…

Jake Johnson followed through on his idea of a small town, “grassroots” skateboard tour. Though you’d only know about Map Masquerade if you check the Slap forum (hence us being three weeks late on it), him and several others have driven from San Francisco to Vegas to Albuquerque to Austin, and are currently in New Orleans, not doing demos or signings, but simply “skating with a group of [local] skaters in the way they skate.” They’ve been hiding product in every city on the list, and you can follow the tour on A Sense of Direction.org (it also has a list of Instagram accounts associated with it, which give clues as to where product is hidden.)

The first three web edits from the Map Masquerade tour: San Francisco (“When I think San Francisco skateboarding, I think KRS-One”), Las Vegas, Albuquerque.

Two-minute Stephan Martinez raw footage tape. Some of it was in Goin’ Ham, some of it is new. “That boy good.”

Slappy noseslides are totally chill. Noseslide shove-its should take their place on any “Tricks You Should Never Do” list.

Jake Johnson and Shaun Gregorie session the famed Gold Rail in Washington, D.C.

False alarm, guys. Lil’ Wayne is still very much concerned with skateboarding in 2012, as he can be seen hugging his skateboard, and claiming “Baby, I’m a thrasher” throughout his feature in the new Mystikal video. Whew!

This is what ledges look like before they get put in front of office buildings and we wax them up. (Spoiler: They look like rocks.)

Pad: “We should do a Costa Rica trip.”
Roctakon: “You’ve been watching too many Green Diamond videos.”

Speaking of which, there’s a new Green Diamond Costa Rica clip.

Science might say otherwise, but it is officially spring now.

The Events That Defined New York City Skateboarding in 2011: 15-11

This week’s installment. Going to finish out the remainder of the list next week. Previous editions: #25-21, #20-16.

15. Luis Tolentino Skates on High Things

Though Aldrin Garcia may have set the new highest ollie record in 2011, Luis went his own route and created an alternate, more conceptual category: Highest Average Obstacle in a Skate Part. The average height of every object he skates on or over in his Everywhere We Go Part is estimated to be 40 inches, shattering any previous records (likely held by Darren Harper and Brandon Westgate) by at least half-a-foot. This new record has lead to a variety of bizarre theories from YouTube comments, most notably that Luis has a black person in each leg.

He also started off his part with a trick at a Waffle House, so that’s always a plus.

KCDC Skateshop teamed up with Complex magazine to bring you a list of the 25 best skateboard graphics of 2011. They had some glaring omissions, most notably Skate Mental’s “Creeping on a Set-Up” Bone Thugs homage, and our homie Jonah Miller’s “Stay Hungry” series for RAW New England. (RAW’s Cormega board is pretty cool too.)

Never saw this Flipmode-affiliated clip from 2009 before. Phil Rodriguez kills it, there’s footage from the UWS-favorite Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and proof that human beings actually skate(d) the original metal Rockaway Park, which, if you remember, got Hurricane Irene’d real bad.

NYSkateboarding linked up some photos by Yuri Shibuya last week. There are seven small galleries of New York-based stuff spanning from 1998 to 2008 over on YuriShibuya.com. The resolution on all of them unfortunately sucks. To make up for it, there’s a photo of Ted Barrow on there, switch crooking a Philly step on Hester Street. (Fun anecdote: We got kicked out of that spot in 2004 by a Chinese man wielding a butcher knife and haven’t been back since.)

Continuing along with the whole “IS VHS THE NEW SUPER-8?” thing

Just because you can do a hardflip late flip, doesn’t mean you should. Gross. (Ok, if you’re playing P.J. Ladd or P-Rod in S.K.A.T.E. for some reason, you can do a hardflip late flip.)

Here’s one for the economics majors specializing in broke skateboarder diets: Do dollar burgers serve as a legitimate threat to New York’s burgeoning dollar slice industry? With McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King all charging over $1 for burgers, and even dollar hot dogs quickly becoming a thing of the past, can this new trend sustain itself and expand into more skateboarder-heavy neighborhoods? (The one in question is on 39th, on the westside, and there are no spots nearby.)
