The Guggenheim

Spots: Uptown Manhattan — Upper East Side

Update — Spring 2012: The downhill curved ledge (the best one at the spot), has lighting fixtures attached to it now, so you can no longer skate it.

Spot: The entire exterior of the building is covered with smooth concrete, white-painted ledges. Some of them are nestled in planters, while others have a massive, seven foot drop on the other end if you happen to lean your weight too heavy over the side. The standout ledge would probably be the curved, downhill ledge that gradually ascends in height. It can only be skated backside for regular / frontside for goofy.

All of the ledges here are frequently retouched, and are a pure white color. So the second your board touches one, the mark is extremely apparent. Just keep that in mind in the event that a cop rolls by and happens to catch sight of a clean, white ledge that was turned to a waxy, black-marked mess in a matter of minutes.

Bust — ♦♦♦ / Half-and-half: This is a night spot, namely after 9 P.M. or later. The building has a custodial staff that may occasionally come to kick you out and scold you for ruining the ledges, but the security has expensive paintings to worry about, and usually stays inside. However, the NYPD does pass by, and Fifth Avenue is pretty desolate at night, so you don’t exactly have a lot of factors concealing you in the night when a cursory patrol yields eight dirty skateboarders skating one of the twentieth century’s most renown architectural achievements. But it all depends on the cops, oftentimes you can get away with a warning, but don’t be surprised if they pull over and ask you for ID…

Location: 89th Street and Fifth Avenue. Take the 4, 5 or 6 to 86th Street. Skate west on 86th Street until you hit Central Park / Fifth Avenue / Museum Mile. Make a right, and skate north for three blocks.
