A lot of interviews went online this past week, and Frozen in Carbonite’s interview with Chris Franzen might be the best of the bunch. He talks about L.A. County (“We were just a bunch of rejects from the industry”), switch 360 flips over Cali tables off flat, and stuff about the business of skateboarding in the nineties that other interviews may be reluctant to address. Must-read for anyone who is a fan of that much mythologized decade.

The Artest era in New York was short, underwhelming, injury-ridden, and worst of all, a decade late, but to his credit, he did provide the team with possibly its sole highlight of the 2013-2014 season.

It has been online since Thursday night, but Looney Bin is really solid. Best LurkNYC video yet. Every Cyrus part gets better, the homie Adam Zhu has chill tricks, and that dude Jason Byoun’s part is great. If you’re still not at terms with Drake, you could probably find solace in the music there too.

The Theories of Atlantis site has DVDs of The Brodies for sale. It’s $25, but includes the past three Elkin vids, fancy packaging and a photo book. The video has gotten more replay than pretty much anything else from the past few months (A.K.A. anything else since Beef Patty and Solo Jazz.) Good to see not-neccesarily-pro New York skaters in their thirties still killing it. Also, Ishod is one of the best but Leo Gutman won S.O.T.Y. on QS.

Congratulations to Ishod Wair on being the first Thrasher Skater of the Year from New Jersey. (Side Note: Is Fred Gall just going to eventually get a “Lifetime Achievement Award” to make up for past wrongs a la Kubrick, Hitchcock, etc. never winning a Best Director Oscar?) There are always politics behind S.O.T.Y. (“You think you’re so clever for figuring that one out?”), but Ishod is a prime choice to strike a balance between what the kids like, and what the old nerds have left to still be hyped on in pro skateboarding. In other words, his appeal spans multiple generations. Going to go ahead and say his Sabotage 3 remix part is still his best part, and probably the best part of 2013, mostly because he looks best when he’s doing lines. We’re also partial to rap parts.

If you missed the web premiere of SB Chronicles 2, there is a 7 P.M. screening at Village East Cinema tomorrow (12th Street and 2nd Avenue.) Doors open at 6:45. The theater is small, so it is on a first come, first served basis. Flyer here. P.S. They’re going to play the QS “Best of 2013” clip before the video ;)

The new eight-minute Politic Skateboards promo, People’s Temple, is now online. Dave Caddo is the king of doing lines across an entire skate spot. A three-trick line at Con Ed Banks is nuts, given the ground there.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Shumpert’s dunk was cool, Monta Ellis’ game winner was cool, but can we please get Nick Young on a team with J.R. Smith to form an irrational confidence super team? Watching the decisions they make would be more fun than watching any Knicks game from this season.

Supreme London has a new video out that feels like a weird commercial you’d see at the end of a non-411 video magazine circa 2000, but in a good way.

In actual early-2000s non-411 video magazine news, Skate.ly uploaded Progression Video Magazine #2. It includes parts from Aaron Suski (shout to Rawkus), Pat Smith, Airto Jackson (who was a bit ahead of his time, especially by east coast standards), and a definitely ahead of his time, NY-heavy section from Dave Mayhew, which has Rodney Torres cameos and an insane ender at the Banks (it was unfortunately forgotten for our rap video skate part post.) In all honesty, if resources were no issue, the one dream article that would be perfect for QS is one of those “oral histories” about The Storm, the most misunderstood skate video of all time.

Power surges aside, it has been a slow news week.

A devout skate archivist needs to scan the entire Big Brother “Black Issue” and put it online for Black History Month. Bob Shirt has a few scans, though not the comprehensive issue: Kareem Campbell interview, Kareem interviewing Keenan Milton, and a Jahmal Williams interview.

After exhausting Lil’ Wayne coverage in 2012, we promised to move past his skate-related pursuits in the new year. Then, he stalled on a quarterpipe, and made it rain on five strippers. So there’s that. (Screenshot here if you don’t want to sit through eight minutes of Lil’ Wayne footage. Shout out to the person on Facebook who reported that photo as inappropriate due to a heavily pixelated tit.) Even so…

The One Up Skateshop crew in Pittsburg always puts out quality videos, so here’s a new Nick Panza part and the first half of their 2012 promo.
