Squad Goals

all day breakfast

I go back in my pocket, and I go buy…another one.

Thanks to everyone who grabbed something from the webstore. We’re getting caught up on orders these next two days so please hold on any “where’s my stuff”-emails for a few days. If you don’t receive a confirmation to the email you purchased with by the end of the week, feel free to hit us up. Quantities of some stuff are running low so grab something while you can or pay your local shop a visit :)

Free Skate Mag interviewed Palace’s Juan Saavedra. Been saying that partying til all hours in the night is ninety percent more likely to open better doors for you than a six-figure college degree / student loan bill ever could.

TWS has a new four-minute edit via Josh Stewart featuring all the Theories dudes.

Hard to think of a subject that is more frequently pontificated on in the skateboard-sites-with-words-on-them-o-sphere than the varial flip. Fakie Hill Bomb on “this year’s ugly duckling turned prom queen.” Pretty sure it has been #ontrend since Stevie did it switch in the Parental Advisory throwaways though.

ICYMI: The Black Hubba Instagram clip heard around the world.

SMLTalk proposes that we rename the regular-stance frontside heelflip to “hardflip,” since it is, after all, the hardest flip trick that exists. The Rieder Bond Street one is easily top seventeen or eighteen trick done in city limits.

You might have caught sight of that bike track below the Williamsburg Bridge while skating over its north side. NY Skateboarding paid it a visit for a spot check.

Jenkem unearthed some vintage Brooklyn Banks footage from 1993. I’d vote for Donald Trump if he vowed to restore the small Banks to their original state with ledges pre-2004 reconstruction. #makethebanksgreatagain2016

Boil the Ocean on skateboarding and a controversial subject — an actual career.

Skateboard Story interviewed notable pro sweatpants advocate, Jimmy Gorecki.

A bit related: Sal Barbier is reissue-ing some of the classic Aesthetics boards.

Fam where the hell is Dave Mayhew on this list?

Surprised it has taken this long for a skate clip to use “Back 2 Back,” given our current #attermswithdrake era. When’s someone gonna skate to “Wack 2 Wack” though?

QS Sports Desk: After seeing this re-posted on a few varying outlets I can still honestly say this is the only smidgen of New York Knicks basketball that I have watched this season thus far. He does wear a #6 after all…

Just take me to a spot that’s famous.

“In March, Kelvin and the other patinetos left San Salvador in the dead of night, and skated three hundred and fifty miles through Guatemala to the border town of Tecún Umán. That was the easy part. It’s fifteen hundred miles across Mexico, much of it past growing ranks of Mexican immigration security agents, kidnappers and extortionists.” How four dudes skated from El Salvador to the U.S. to flee gang violence …and here we are complaining about how some spot in Bushwick is too far.

A three-minute Challex Olson Instagram footage compilation. He’s singlehandedly keeping 12th & A alive to the world outside of the East Village.

Frozen in Carbonite re-casts a City of God reboot with Brazilian skateboarders.

Much respect to the guys at Blue Tile Skate Shop and Jim T. at Real for their protest against a Klan rally that happened in Columbia, South Carolina this past weekend. (Yes, this country still has fucking Klan rallies.) Here’s a good article from earlier this year about the creation of Jim’s “Hanging Klansman” graphic.

Here’s long iPhone video with the MPC™ / Paych / Sure guys, and here’s a short iPhone video with the MPC™ / Paych / Sure guys.

New part from Chuck MVP, one of the stars of legendary Instagram compilations, Dime Comp Volume 1 and Dime Comp Volume 2. Also features the forever underrated Canadian, Andrew McGraw. #freegucci

This dude nose manualed up Black Hubba.

Skateboard Story interviewed German Nieves, cult hero at the QS office and runner up for best new old part of 2015 (#1 = this), about starting your own brand in 2015.

An interview with the girl behind Girl.

Transworld posted their “AM Spotlight” interview / photos with Antonio Durao. He also switch 360 flipped the double-set at the L.E.S. Park this past weekend. When does the Love Gap get drained again?

ICYMI: Solid new all-HD LurkNYC montage, and an “old” new Jake Johnson part filmed in one day during a stopover in Reading, Pennsylvania.

The marble mini hubbas in midtown are a wrap.

Quote of the Week: “Nobody looks unhappier than people who are really good at skating transition.” — Roctakon

As DS2 blares through portable speakers for the remainder of the summer, let’s take a moment to revisit the classic intro off the ANCIENT original Dirty Sprite mixtape from 2011. Amazing how probably zero other “hot” rappers from back then are #relevant now. The game’s rough man.

Also, shout out to Future for using a Shutterstock image as his album cover.

2014 New York Skateboarding Year in Review: 25-21

25-grease

(The list series formerly known as “The Events That Defined New York Skateboarding in 20__”)

If you started reading our award-winning skateboard website in 2014, we should inform you that every December, we turn the mundane into the fantastic by counting down the moments that shaped skateboarding in this fine city throughout the past twelve months. They are listed in rough order of importance, depending on how you define the word “important.” A fun way to reminisce for those who were there, and a way to get informed for those who were not. Enjoy ;)

Previously…2013: 25-21, 20-16, 15-11, 10-6, 5-1 / 2012: 25-21, 20-16, 15-11, 10-6, 5-1 / 2011: 25-21, 20-16, 15-11, 10-6, 5-1 / 2010: 25-21, 20-16, 15-11, 10-6, 5-1

25. The Grease Banks

We begin our year-end countdown with where we began last year: skate deterrents. Where would we be if not for those who try to stop us?

We’re accustomed to having buckets of water poured on us by people who live above diamond-plate skate spots, or eggs thrown at us by kids out of project windows. Hell, in Barcelona, we saw someone throw bleach from a window on a drunk crowd of skateboarders outside a bar. But this fall, after becoming an accidental neighbor with Chinatown’s latest bank spot, a restaurant poured kitchen grease all over the obstacle of interest, which — short of maybe smearing shit all over a spot — is the most hateful skate deterrent of all time, especially in less-detectable low light.

The 2013 New York Skateboarding Year in Review: 10-6

blubba tricks

Hope everyone had a good Christmas. Let’s get this thing done with.

Previously: #s 25-21, #s 20-16, #s 15-11, The Year in T.F. Obstacles

10. Skating Over Black Hubba Becomes a “Thing”

2013 was filled with benchmark moments that emphasized just how fast skateboarding is progressing: Ishod’s versatility among three parts, Nigel Hudsons’ superhumanness, Westgate’s aversion to physics, and Mark Suciu’s career-worth-of-footage-in-12-months productivity. In New York, life moves a bit faster, but as a result, skating progresses, much, much slower. Everything is five years behind if you want to be generous, ten if you want to be a dick about it.

Our moment came on a smaller level. Filming on Black Hubba has seemed kinda silly ever since Riley Hawk saw it fit to do, like, a bluntslide varial flip down it. Good skateboarders had officially run out of tricks to do there — except now people are good enough to skate over it. Olson kickflipped over it three years ago, but things ramped up this year with a front three, a nollie back 180, a backside flip, and two switch flips.

Tropical Storm Bloomberg Links

Well, that was fun. Bloomberg just might end up looking like the boy who cried wolf next time there’s a serious weather threat. In case you missed it, check out our post of 10 hurricanes better than Irene. That photo up top was stolen from The New York Times‘ Irene gallery.

It’s easy to imagine Kennedy Cantrell and Matt Militano being inevitable local favorites whenever the Slap One in a Million goes down in New York. Are they old enough to get into Le Bain is the real question though.

Rick Howard + The song from the drunk scene in Mean Streets = Must post, even if everyone has already seen it.

If J. Crew insists on making a “Tompkins pant,” there is an issue of when Tompkins’ principal shareholders and Board of Trustees can expect to start receiving their dividends. (There also appears to be a Ludlow suit, hopefully J. Crew doesn’t disregard this issue too long, otherwise, it’s bound to turn into a class action lawsuit from the Ludlow Street Drunks and the Tompkins Square Park Skaters.)

Brian Delatorre landed a spot on the Habitat roster. Here’s his new Firing Line.

Last week, someone frontside nosegrinded down the Black Hubba. This week, somebody backside flips over it in a clip by recent Richmond, VA expatriates.

Piro Sierra 5050s that gigantic rail in The Bronx by Lincoln Hospital at 0:29 in this Naysayer Skateboards clip. Take him to the Rutgers Newark 18-stair rail next. And since we’re talking about The Bronx, watch this clip of Olu Stanley shredding to “(Still) Not a Player.”

Before the iPhone killed off the VX1000, there was a smartphone manufacturer called “Blackberry.” Below is a clip filmed by Emilio Cuilan on his Blackberry, dating from 2007 to 2009, and featuring Ty Lyons, Billy McFeely, Black Dave, Kevin Tierney, Yaje, and a bunch of other TF people.

There’s a new spot across the street from C.I.A. (next to the Starbucks), in the form of a short manual pad off a low drop. It’s a two-second bust, but someone’s going to get footage on it.
