America could learn a lot from the Germans. They took hunks of granite from an old government building and used them to produce an amazing skate spot on an obsolete airfield. Imagine if all that City Hall granite actually went towards making a skate plaza for the city of Philadelphia? How many city plazas get torn out and reduced to scrap each year in the U.S? The “solution” is so simple, but gets turned into such a stupid mess because of zoning / permits / $$$ / insurance / red tape.

Granite from Philly City Hall will be used in the skate “plaza” being built by the art museum. http://haveboard.com/paines-park-progress-love-benches-delivered-today/ After the demo at City Hall they stored it down at FDR and those guys used it for some things, some good some pointless imo, and some probably got stolen, but 20′ long granite slabs are now on site.
Right, I’ve heard that too, but that’s what I meant by “actually” went towards building a plaza.
Knowing Philly, those things are going to sit there for years before anything productive is actually done with them due to an inevitable string of bureaucratic nonsense. How many years have they been talking about Philly getting a proper park now? It has to be over ten. The point here isn’t even about skateparks. Skateparks are a business and much respect to the companies that produce proper ones, but there’s a way to re-utilize so much marble/granite/stone/etc. that cities with skateboard “problems” throw out each year in a designated area without ever needing to hire a skatepark designer. 12th & A is literally four slabs (now three) of granite stacked on top of wood and is one of the most popular spots in this city. No park designers needed to be involved.
I highly doubt the Berlin plaza happened overnight, but it couldn’t have been as much of a mess as it is to get a designated place for skating in any number of U.S. cities.
the new plaza is supposed to be done this summer and is using some of the granite from city hall. check out the franklins paine website sometime, more cities need to follow what philly skaters have been doing recently with Pops park and all the diy spots coming up as well as a lot of smaller parks in the works

That Berlin plaza is awesome, Chicago could really use something like that. Also, you’re absolutely right about no need for park planners- just give us a few marble ledges and a slope and we’ll have a field day, no fuss required.
