Five Favorite Parts with Pontus Alv

This feature was never intended to only feature guys who run skateboard companies, but it’s kinda looking that way, huh? At least this one is themed around a single year (that’s not 1996), so you get a break from re-watching Guy’s Mouse part ;) Personally speaking, I had only seen one of these before, and pointing people in the direction of great, under-appreciated parts is sort of what this feature is supposed to do. So here are five favorite video parts from Polar Skateboards C.E.O. and D.I.Y. advocate, Pontus Alv.

(And before some commenter points it out, yes, he does mention a trick that Nigel Hudsons did in his new part, we get it. The interview was conducted before then. Curbs > rails anyway, who cares.)

Unrelated but worth noting: 1) The new Politic Skateboards video, People’s Temple, premieres at 2nd Nature in Bushwick on Sunday. New, full Dave Caddo part! Who wins the battle of most insane thing accomplished on a skateboard for the past week — Jake Johnson (above) or Dane Burman for 5050ing the Philadelphia Municipal Services rail? (As a result of those two, one of the crazier bluntslides in recent history may have unfortunately been overshadowed.)

Though it doesn’t have the particular Montreal trick in question, the new GX1000 montage has a good bit of Jake Johnson footage from Montreal.

Copenhagen seems like a good time.

Small Wheels has a short, entirely New York-set welcome video for Aaron Herrington. (Still tough to spell that with an “E” instead of an “A” given memories of a guy who spells his name with the latter.) Also, while (somewhat) on the topic of Polar, their section in Grey Area is nostalgic in a EE3 sort of way and generally awesome.

On Golden Pond 2 is a 20-minute homie video, mostly filmed in New York.

With winter midtown season fast approaching, here’s a chill black and white gallery of the DQM team on a high ISO session.

Watermelon Alex and Belief Skate Shop are hosting a best trick contest at the Astoria Park next Saturday, November 2nd.

Speaking of Belief, their 2013 video, Ever Upward, is on Vimeo in its entirety.

The good news: Someone up there likes skateboarding, because the Chase two up, five down has been remodeled into exactly what it once was. The bad news: The building has been sold to a Chinese company, with “plans to expand and enhance the retail space at the base of the building,” so it may soon become a bust.

Take a trip back to New Jersey and Philadelphia in 2005-2008, and realize just how long Brian Wenning’s impact on fashion in the region hung around for.

Some of the sickest-looking skateboarding continues to come out of Pittsburgh.

Is house music in bro cam clips featuring mostly skaters who are 25+ going to turn into a “thing?” and the new Diamond Days clip might technically be more #street than the one that was supposed to be their return to the streets, provided we are still treating Fat Kid Spot as a #street spot.

Snack Skateboards (no affiliation obvs) comes through with one of the better “Summer Trip to NYC” web clips to come out this year.

Boil the Ocean makes the case for the frontside noseslide being the most “picture-esque” of slide tricks, via a recent example by Brian Clarke. Though not a slide, we’re partial to the frontside noseslide’s cousin, the backside 180 nosegrind.

Kukunochi Corp. has some scans of a Swedish magazine article about Polar’s 2012 trip to New York. Lots of cool photos, though no English translation.
