Munchie Mart

Congrats to Beatrice on the pro board. Stephen Ostrowski has a cool story about the guest trick that she had in his Glue part on IG.

Austin Bristow dropped a seven-minute edit of the Palace boys, entitled “Laust in Translation.” Includes what is effectively a full-ish Rory Milanes part, and an ender part from Lucien Clarke, which wraps up with him hitting some of the same locations from the very first Palace trip to New York edit from 2011.

The Jenkem dudes snuck into what can without hyperbole be called the biggest bust in New York City (the Roosevelt Island Monument), so Julian Lewis could pull off two N.B.Ds. Fakie flip was worth a summons though :)

Certified Skater Boy

“Smith knows that what becomes of Mosquito Beach is likely out of his hands. But that doesn’t dampen his impulse to keep building these spaces.” New York magazine’s Curbed publication profiled Pat Smith, Jerry Mraz, and the D.I.Y. skatepark scene in New York City, with Mosquito Beach as the focal point. (Apparently, a “sewage bomb” was unleashed on Newtown Creek following the storm last Wednesday, so it should be an interesting situation over there for a bit…)

“The era in which TD, Seagram, and similar plazas were constructed can be considered a ‘goldilocks’ moment in modern history, where the design of successful public spaces did not preclude the eventuality of skateboarding.” Michael Barker chronicles the simultaneously monumental and accidental influence of Mies van der Rohe in modern skateboarding for Village Psychic.

Wumbus Video” is an eight-minute video from Tom Albin, who brought you the Public Skateboarding full-length from late last year. Kickflip back smith on the curb to Billy Joel ender was fire :)

Unknobbing Rails on the Run

Lebron is battling Carmelo in the NBA Playoffs …in August, and Nas made a new song with Foxy Brown, AZ and Cormega. Who really knows what fucking year it actually is, what’s going on — or anything, really.

Incredible manuals, great spots, and chic skate noises in Japhey Dow’s Heirloom part, which traverses all around New York state.

“If skateboarding is the quilt and all of these other interests that make up so much of skateboarding, if those things are the patches, just keep adding patches.” Sage Elsesser interviewed Ray Barbee for Thrasher.

And my world is colorsPhoto by Emilio Cuilan.

Supreme London has a new video out that feels like a weird commercial you’d see at the end of a non-411 video magazine circa 2000, but in a good way.

In actual early-2000s non-411 video magazine news, Skate.ly uploaded Progression Video Magazine #2. It includes parts from Aaron Suski (shout to Rawkus), Pat Smith, Airto Jackson (who was a bit ahead of his time, especially by east coast standards), and a definitely ahead of his time, NY-heavy section from Dave Mayhew, which has Rodney Torres cameos and an insane ender at the Banks (it was unfortunately forgotten for our rap video skate part post.) In all honesty, if resources were no issue, the one dream article that would be perfect for QS is one of those “oral histories” about The Storm, the most misunderstood skate video of all time.

Rihanna loves Ishod Wair’s socks. She’s perfect. Also, Ishod has a new video interview about his Sabotage 3 part.

An early-2000s montage edited by Sho Ma.

Wow, this guy really wants a new board.

To nobody’s surprise, somebody combined a scooter and a pogo stick (you can get money for anything these days.) Can we expect a Lance Mountain Goldfish sequel?

Consumer Goods Updates: 1) Former Aesthetics rider, Jimmy Gorecki, started his own line of high-end sweatpants, called Jimmy Sweatpants. 2) Ripped Laces offers some thoughts on New Balance’s upcoming line of skate shoes.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Ricky Rubio’s double behind-the-back dribble drive. P.S. Some genius made a song about the QS Sports Desk’s favorite player.

Quote of the Week: “This place is Ted Narrow.” — Tyler Tufty regarding the width of a bar that Ted Barrow was working at.

A remix of Mark Suciu’s Sabotage part is going on The Skateboard Mag site tomorrow, so you guys can continue arguing. Hopefully, it’s not edited to any songs off The Blueprint 3.

Coda Skateboards ‘Slappy Hour’ Promo

Coda has a short new video out. Ten minute video, seven minute bonus/credits section. A bit lighter on the memorable New York location scouting than their last video was, but it’s still going to send a handful of spot sharks onto message boards with screenshots and requests for directions. (Actually, does anyone even use message boards anymore?) Only full parts are from Conor Fay and Jerry Mraz, but there are plenty of features, including Pat Smith and Loose Trucks Max. At least 50% of Jerry Mraz’s part looks like it was filmed in the middle of the projects. If you know of a bank spot in the middle of some buildings, it’s probably in here. He also does a middle of the street 360 shove, 360 flip immediately after combo that Carroll did in another middle of the street masterwork. It’s one of the best two trick flatground sequences that exists for line choreographers today.

Added bonus: No annoying soundtrack. Chuck Berry, Lynyrd Skynyrd. There’s no Nelly, but not exactly anything you can complain about. Be sure to stop by Coda Skateboards.com to check out what they have going on. Have a good weekend.
