Over the weekend, there was a scare that Shorty’s was being demolished. Although it ended up being a miscommunication between the city and a private company, part of the structure was demolished, but much of the spot remains in tact. The Shorty’s crew met with the mayor of Newark today, and you can read an update here.

Super refreshing to see an interview with a nineties pro from the east coast that doesn’t tread the bitter waters that cover so many recollections of that time period. Chromeball interview #99 is with civil engineer, Andy Stone. Anndd Twitter’s saying the newly surfaced footage of him belongs in the Smithsonian.

Speedway Mag posted its extended interview with Josh Stewart about the entire Static series on the occasion of Theories’ ten-year anniversary. (The edited version originally appeared on the Keen Distribution site if some bits seem familiar.)

“Elsewhere in Los Angeles, Jim Greco boils.” As discussed last week, skateboarding has doubled down on angst while angsty icons of the 2000s have rebranded themselves with a newfound focus on straightforward skateboarding. Boil the Ocean considers our age of the self-concious comeback in skateboarding.

Has the site fallen off a bit as of late? Sure. Was Quartersnacks Vogue week (see #19) just a really high concept editorial week where we barely post anything on the said theme because we’re under-qualified to report on it? Definite possibility. Are we looking towards a bright future of reportage on New York skateboard minutiae, silly remix videos, and mediocre skate clips? Absolutely!

Jasper Dohrs’ Thirty Purse part is full of quick-footed curbery, wallrides on chain links, ambitious heaves over the First Avenue bike lane, and is entirely filmed in New York.

End of an era, although it probably needed an update unless you’re a nostalgia over function type of guy ;) Riverside Skatepark is getting a cement re-design, which includes a bowl and halfpipe. And wait, is that a…regular, straight ledge?!

Fresh off the inaugural “Skaters in Cars Looking At Spots” segment, which claimed Governor Gall has the locations on all his photos mislabeled, this video might help narrow down the vicinity of some New Jersey crust.

Brick City Street Styles is the new video from the crew that brought you 2013’s awesome In Crust We Trust video. They skated Newark every weekend for over a year, and this is what they came back with. There’s not a whole lot of overt Newark coverage on behalf of the skate media, short of the occasional Peaches line or maybe that one Ride Channel segment, so this one-city video is pretty refreshing.

We’d also like to present whoever edited the video with our first-ever “Successfully Avoiding the Obvious” Award, which commends those who resist the temptation of excessively on-the-nose #musicsupervision decisions (e.g. Koston in Yeah Right*, New York clips edited to Nas or our L.A. clip.) They could’ve used a Redman song, and most people editing an all-Newark video would have, but they didn’t!

*Completely Unrelated: Does anyone have a link to the alternate edit of Koston’s Yeah Right part to Prince’s “Let’s Get Crazy?” It definitely exists, maybe on the non-Rhino DVD, but the fact that it is so impossible to find online would lead one to believe that it’s just some Easter egg myth. Might have something to do with Prince’s litigious attitude towards the internet though…

The Bronze 56K DVD (which includes the other three Flipmode videos) is now available at DQM for those who are afraid the government watches their every move, and are hesitant to enter financial information online. The DVD is not the extensive box set we had envisioned for New York’s greatest skate video franchise, but even as a bare bones release, it is a must-own. Hopefully, sometime before the DVD completely dies off, we’ll have a 6-disc Criterion Collection release with director’s commentaries, “Where are they now?” featurettes for Why Man Why and Billy Lynch, Flipmode 3, I Woke Up Dead, and the believed-to-be-lost first video all included.

If you’re over 21, have an internet connection, and ride a skateboard, there’s a 98% you’ll see any Gino-related thing within 12 hours of it going online. If not, watch his DQM welcome video. Wow on the music supervision.

This “Lil’ Wayne is into skateboarding” thing doesn’t look like it’s ending anytime soon. Hey Wayne, unless you’re Mike Carroll filming for Fully Flared or something, 30 isn’t the best time to begin focussing on skateboarding. Stick to ~~what you’re good at~~ what you used to be good at. (Also: Will the grand opening of the skatepark Wayne is building in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward look anything like the “Pop That” video?)
