Boil the Ocean offers up some reflections on Knowing Mixtape Volume 2, as does Canada’s King ~~Shit~~ magazine. Agree that “every single clip is extraordinary in some way.” Three-and-a-half years of filming for a 17-minute video has a way of doing that — even the bails they put in there stand out in a very particular way that other videos can’t pull off. Also! Tiago for S.O.T.Y. every year until they give it to him.

This upload is from August, but only catching it now: “Fasuad” is a fun homie video by Marc Pascua. It’s all filmed around the city with some cameos from Mark Suciu, Frankie Spears, et al., and edited to a song that they would play at the healing crystal and plants store by T.F.

Fashion Is Only Data — Dime Comp Volume 6

Much has changed since we last compiled the best moments from skateboarding’s leading thinktank. Hugo is pro, Bryan is so busy that he doesn’t have a single appearance in Volume 6, and only time will tell how the people who were put off by the idea an overseas skate trip for the sole purpose of filming for Instagram Stories will feel about Dime’s TikTok page.

While we all wait for the wide release of their full-length video that premiered back in late September, these fifteen minutes from the past year-plus of Dime (and Dime-affiliated) Insta videos should hold you over.

Here’s an eight-minute recap of the Hardies event at Blue Park this past Friday, which includes the best angle of Tyshawn’s kickflip over the table longways thus far.

The Man Who Films spent a lot of time in Rockaway this past summer and made a fifteen-minute video entitled “Beach Genius.” Everyone knows that Rockaway isn’t the most abundant part of the city for spots, so shout out to those guys for managing to avoid all the skateparks in all but one clip. Includes a mini Phil Rodriguez section where he somehow turns one of those blue bus shelters into an actual bank. And it’s also perhaps the first time in human history that there’s been a transition from Nicki Minaj to …MF Doom. Good vibe the whole way through, and the right amount of ~different~ ♥

A Different Glory — Dime Live At Stadium

The night before Dime’s Live At Stadium event, a skateboarder who you probably follow on Instagram made a facetious observation: “There’s not even any money this time, just glory. What’s the point?”

He was right on one count. Yes, there were no cash prizes being given out, but glory — at least that branded form of Glory™ that is only awarded at the Dime Glory Challenge — was not on the table either. One of Dime’s founders was explicit in his proclamation that this is not the Glory Challenge. The fleeting sense of glory that proceeds all skateboard feats was obviously anyone’s for the taking. Eternal Glory™ requires Joe Valdez to be present, and he was in California.

The Dime Glory Challenge has been compared to Wrestlemania, it has been called an antidote to Street League, and a joke in the face of skateboarding’s road to becoming an Olympic sport. I have heard colleagues echo my sentiments about Dime being the only company whose ideas are worthy of jealousy. “You know that one Dime video where ___” is a frequent refrain among many of our peers.

How do you write about something that everyone is unanimously in love with for the third year in a row without veering into trite redundancy? Why is it impossible to see anyone who doesn’t like Dime as anything but a shameless contrarian?

Last Saturday, we woke up so excited that we showed up to the Challenge at noon, only to learn that it would not begin until 3 P.M. Our moderately day-drunk sights set on our fellow attendees: only a week removed from #NYFW, a buzzed “wouldn’t it be funny” soon turned into asking strangers for pictures of their outfits to pass the time and break some ice.
