Pat Smith’s Coda Skateboards imprint turned 20 this year, and to celebrate, they dropped their fourth full-length video entitled Coda EP, which is heavy on the D.I.Y. spots (some built outta mulch…) + crust + includes a Tony Farmer section! Lots of crazy shit towards the end.

The Mômes boys out of Paris did a Barcelona trip and came back with a new edit: “Zero Footage.”

Videographer Joe Hiddleson has been uploading tapes captured from 90s skate missions, and this one of Bam Margera skating the Financial District in ’96 is gold. Ends on a drop-in battle down the grey wall that Stu Kirst rode into in Johnny’s Vid. Was shocked to see how much of lower Manhattan in 1996 still looks the same today.

It is no stretch to say that way back when Instagram first introduced video capabilities, the Blobys and Paris crews of the mid-2010s probably did the most in pushing the style that came to define our expectations for your average “Insta edit.” It was healthy balance between lands, slams and hijinx, with an economic approach to the timeline that had less concern for showing the rollaway than any style of skate video to come before it. (*Abe Simpson voice* “Back when Instagram first introduced videos, they could only be fifteen seconds long!”)

The Mômes series became the #longform culmination of that style, even quoting a 2013 Stevie Williams interview as the manifesto for their first installment: “The problem with most videos these days is that they just show how challenging skateboarding is, rather than showing how fun it is. I don’t have time for that shit.”

Usually the assumption on these posts is that you’ve already seen anything that Thrasher posted last week, but Jaakko Ojanen and Eetu Toropainen’s shared part is absolutely nuts. You’ll be hard pressed to find another recent part with this much mind-bending shit that still actually looks good. Nobody skates like Jaakko.

Stuck On Earth

TWS interviewed a handful of pros and industry people about the effects of corona virus on the skate industry, as did Parade — except with a focus on small, independent skate brands (like QS!) The common theme between all of them is the resilience of skaters. Yes, shit is crazy right now, but skateboarding isn’t going anywhere once this is all over. The fact that Seattle is experiencing a slowdown in new cases (it was the first part of the country to get hit) is a tiny pinch of an indicator that social restrictions are working. Be safe, be patient, be supportive ♥ And while we know people go on QS to forget the noise of the outside world, if you want to read something COVID-19 related that’s responsibly reported and level-headed, this is the one.
