“I went to a trade school in the 8th grade to try out a few potential careers that might be interesting. I was in a HVAC course and we all had to use the older guys’ work clothes, which was like a lab coat that doctors would wear. Well, when I put mine on, it was super big on me, so everyone started calling me ‘Dr. Z.’ It just kinda stuck. I wish it was a better story but there you go.” Zered Bassett sits down with The Chromeball Incident for a #longform, career-spanning interview.
Josh Stewart is a lunatic and put his body through another Static video. The trailer is live. (He promised it’s the last one.) Excited for that Jordan Trahan part.
“As far as Jimmy Quartersnacks was concerned with Tommy being made Meatball making it back to Japan, it was like we were all being made making it back to Japan.” Happy Birthday Meatball (and Rihanna) 💞 QS for Classic Grip available at Japanese shops now ❤️
Fly’n across America 🇺🇸 Ryan Mettz dropped a quick new homie edit with Cyrus, Max, Karim & Franco.
Acai, film rolls and sushi: Skate Jawn‘s latest “$100 Chill” feature is with Naquan Rollings and perfectly encapsulates a low-stakes winter skate day in New York.
It was the best of chicken sandwiches; it was the worst of chicken sandwiches.
At press time, I have yet to experience the already-legendary Popeye’s chicken sandwich. The saga — almost Dickensian, if you will — continues. First, I called around to see which area franchises carried the sandwich to no avail. When I inquired as to when it would become available, they responded with some variation of “whenever the owner decides to sell the sandwich.”
I felt like a schlub, like I was calling around on a Jordan release date asking, “uhhhh when are y’all gettin’ a restock?” In the subsequent weeks, the sandwich has taken my area by storm, leading to football-field-long drive-thru lines and signs that flat-out say: “WE ARE OUT OF CHICKEN SANDWICHES.”
Where there’s fire, there’s smoke — and where there’s water, there are skate spots. Skateboarding crawled out of the Pacific Ocean on a day with no waves, and its progression has largely been the work of those residing in coastal cities. From Third & Army to Southbank, waterfront property has provided an idyllic atmosphere necessary to clear the head and innovate. In fact, many New York ledge skating skills have been honed along the Seaport, a tradition that continues northward to this very summer, with the new Upper East Side ledges / manny pads becoming an IGhot spot.
Copies of Matt Velez’s new video, Calzone, are on sale. Another teaser here.
“This urgent, shouty Mannie Fresh anthem, a sort of primal materialistic scream from within a sumptuously appointed mansion, stands as the best song in any Ty Evans-helmed Film to date; paired off Lucas Puig’s luxury-brand tech, it makes a strong argument for the greatest song in any video ever.” Boil the Ocean offers up eight of Ty Evans’ best #musicsupervision victories, the man who introduced skaters to electro.
^^^2017 Best of Dustin Henry, reigning titleholder for QS’ “Skater You’d Be Most O.K. With Your Daughter Dating” Award. Edited by Tyler Warren.
This one was pretty heartwarming: Monster Children has a mini doc on Josh Kalis’ relationship and history with the city of Chicago. I’ve seen that street gap kickflip a hundred times before and still said “oh my God” on this go-around. (Maybe Ride will finally stop asking us why Chicago isn’t a bigger deal in skateboarding with this one?)
QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: 76ers-OKC was game of the year so far, yes? Gonna give it to Embiid’s block on Russy in OT1, but only because Russy ended up winning anyway :)
