Alex Olson started a lil’ skate talk show called “Skate Wise” on Know Wave Radio. The first episode is on Soundcloud. It’s the talk show equivalent of a bunch of dudes sitting around on a couch ranting about skating after a session. No real format or try-hard radio personas, which is nice. “I love Ishod, Ishod is sick. Yeah, he drinks beer.”

Based on one viewing of that project, Boston seems to be one of the final east coast refuges for jean shorts. Could the Celtics be in the market for a Josh Harrellson acquisition?

After seeing one in Static 4, and another one in this Capita Skateboards clip, it might be time to officially place frontside 5050 backside 360 outs on 2014’s #trendwatch. Also could happily spend the remainder of human existence without hearing another Big L or Wu-Tang song in a skate video, but Redman might forever have a pass :)

Winter Viewing: The Brodies

Jeremy Elkin made his Brodies video available for online viewing today. Deep freeze depression = temporarily suspended. You can still purchase the DVD set with all four of his videos, a photo book, etc. over on the Theories site.

Who was the last skater to do four or five tricks in a video that got everyone hyped, who didn’t have a readily available part somewhere in the depths of YouTube? Accessible video technology put a stop to that towards the latter end of the previous decade. Except the dudes in this one came a bit before that shift: Akira hasn’t had a part since Mixtape 2 (during which he was probably a teenager), German has two awesome shared parts to his name but they’re seven years apart, Rob Campbell has been meddling in YouTube compilation land for years since EST 2, and Leo Gutman, legitimately one of the best skaters in New York, hasn’t been seen outside of the occasional montage since Flipmode 3 in 2006.

The Brodies is a slice of 2001-2006 — when filmers were fewer, resources were scarcer, but distractions were just as rampant — plus six or seven years of the advancements we have today. New York skateboarding is full of sick “whatever happened to” guys, and this video thankfully keeps that title away from a handful of the top candidates. Added bonus of Aaron Herrington, Daniel Kim and Jason Spivey footage. Both teams played hard.

(BTW since it’s awards season it all, it should be mentioned that The Brodies won two of our year-end honors: #22 for Akira’s entire part filmed in sweatpants and #4 for Leo’s Q.S.S.O.T.Y. win.)

2013 was okay. What is it about New Year’s this year that makes it seem more garbage than usual though? Anyway, like, where’s everyone at tonight? ;)

5. The Subway Track Ollie

If you have ever stood on a subway platform staring at the countdown clock, the thought has come to mind: “Could someone hypothetically ollie over the tracks?” In theory, if Jeremy Wray did that water tower ollie, it’d have to be possible. Then you’d consider the additional curve-in, the timing, the train, the bust, and eventually, the third rail, which stands to give anyone who touches it an unpleasant departure from earth in the event of a worst case scenario.

The speculation ended this year, as Koki Loaiza ollied from platform to platform at the 145th Street A station…going towards the third rail and earning press from media outlets far beyond skateboarding’s typical reach.

Let Me Ride: Fall New York Montage

Conceptually speaking, this is the best trick of 2012.

If you need some incentive to layer up and go skating despite plummeting temperatures, Taji Ameen just put together a sick fall clip for Acapulco Gold. Features Leo Gutman (forever one of the best low-key skaters in New York), Billy Rohan, and a grip of other people, including the kid above who, uh, dropped in off a basketball hoop. Every year, people complain about how the NBA All-Star Weekend’s basketball game progressively gets worse (everything has more or less already been done.) How about getting this dude involved? Skateboarding’s mad trendy right now. It’s a win-win. Paul George is even skating in Foamposites, what more do you want.
