March Madness Bro

bracket-powerpointcomplete

March Madness starts tomorrow. If it wasn’t supposed to be 54 degrees, and we didn’t find college basketball incredibly hard to follow beyond a casual game here and there, we’d probably be watching. Always been in agreement with the NBA:Hollywood / NCAA:Student Film analogy, but can’t imagine any of tomorrow’s match-ups being worse than a 2014 Knicks or Lakers game, and both of those teams are on national TV tonight. ESPN and TNT really need to instate a flex schedule man…

In any case, Frozen in Carbonite got all Grantland on us, and formed a bracket about a topic dear to everyone: 1990s skateboarding. Voting for the first round ends tomorrow (March 20th), and this is what the results look like now. Good luck picking between Igei v.s. Pupecki and Lotti v.s. Drake Jones. (Currently “active” pros with boards out are omitted from the bracket.) Vote here.

Also in the spirit of the season, Nike SB is releasing two rival colorways on Saturday (one for Georgetown, the other for UNC), and we put together a little video for the UNC one with Connor Champion / Black Sheep Skateshop down in Charlotte. It’s nothing you’ve never seen before — a generic cruiser clip filmed at TF West, but it represents a QS milestone in that we found something relevant to edit to the SportsCenter theme. (FYI: Having seen “Top Ten Plays” more than one time on any given morning is the telltale sign of needing to leave the house for most QS employees. Or at least those with cable.)

And anyone who says “March Madness is the best event in American sports” on account of the kids “having nothing to lose” or whatever is just trying to be #controversial. Opening weekend of the NBA playoffs > everything. Maybe not in the east though…

19 Degrees, Feels Like 8

lousy smarch weather

Late day Monday links update, sorry. Lousy Smarch weather, True Detective, etc. You know?

Labor has a restock of Marisa Tomei and Jesus Piece cruisers on their webstore, but they probably won’t be there for very long.

A lot of interviews went online this past week, and Frozen in Carbonite’s interview with Chris Franzen might be the best of the bunch. He talks about L.A. County (“We were just a bunch of rejects from the industry”), switch 360 flips over Cali tables off flat, and stuff about the business of skateboarding in the nineties that other interviews may be reluctant to address. Must-read for anyone who is a fan of that much mythologized decade.

The Dime crew compiles all the monumental achievements that have occurred while a skater was wearing a yellow tee shirt.

Kanye’s inane, more-calculated-than-people-care-to-admit rants seem to be the latest avant garde skate clip #musicsupervision choice, but when is someone going to edit a clip to DJ Khaled’s McDondald’s commercials?

Josh Stewart interviews Jahmal Williams. Jahmal must also be one of the most photogenic skaters ever — is there a single mediocre photo of the dude on a board?

Alex Olson stops being vague about his new company, Bianca Chandon. He also gives fair warning to all the good-looking boys out there wearing his Fire Island shirts about town. (“Have you ever really been to Fire Island?” #promiscuous)

A cool eight-minute throwaway reel from the past few LurkNYC projects.

Muckmouth interviews Peter Smolik over text (and we thought e-mail interviews were bad…) How could they forget to ask him about the most notorious selfie in skateboard Instagram history though?

Sometimes, dudes just want to skate in Bushwick ‘n stuff: Penny Pinchers II, a video 95% filmed around familiar haunts in Brooklyn.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Metta World Peace Ron Artest got bought out by the Knicks last week. The Artest era in New York was short, underwhelming, injury-ridden, and worst of all, a decade late, but to his credit, he did provide the team with possibly its sole highlight of the 2013-2014 season.

Quote of the Week:

Good luck to Roctakon out west. The QS crew and Dunions will miss u :'(

Stick to Love

mlk poster

Been slow around here for 2014, guys. Sorry :(

Any form of new Rick Howard coverage is skateboarding’s equivalent of an Andre 3000 guest verse. (Speaking of which…)

Alltimers tees now available at Supreme.

Chapman, New York’s longest standing skateboard producers, relaunched their website. It features an awesome archive of past boards, ranging from old Zoo decks, Supreme art boards, the short lived Illuminati Skateboards, and others.

SkateZines.com is a new project from the crew behind SkateAndAnnoy.com, which puts itself to the seemingly impossible task of cataloging all available skate zines of today and info on where to obtain them.

The New York rooftop montage from the opening of Tengu is now available online.

This Japanese guy has a really good kickflip.

Frozen in Carbonite on how P.J. Ladd is like skateboarding’s Bill Belichick — but actually, maybe how he is more like skating’s J.D. Salinger. Or some shit.

A brief, new interview with Bobby Puleo about spot preferences, neighborhoods, and never listening to O.C’s second album despite being a big fan of his first. (Jewelz is obviously nowhere near as good as Word Life but has some moments.)

Another quick interview: NY Skateboarding chats with Kevin Tierney.

New video log from Johnny Wilson and friends. Tricks on Houston Street construction are apparently still trending.

A detailed (!) interview with Rob Brink that might shed some light on what it’s like to work in the skateboard industry outside of sales, or you know, being pro.

New Bolts Hardware 4-5-6 clip with Chris Hart.

Non skate-related link alert! This GQ story about how Mexican cartels get drugs across the United States border these days is wild.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Well, Paul George did a 360 windmill dunk in-game, but…um, Ramon Sessions (yeah) somehow dunked on Lebron the next day…

Quote of the Week
Observant Gentleman: “She looks way better in photos than in real life.”
T-Bird: “Well, she was the hottest girl at Westway on New Year’s Eve…when I showed up at 5 A.M.”

“Tough to draw the greatest trick ever done.” Scott Johnston by Mike Gigliotti.

We got a restock on QS beanies. Mad colors. You’re gonna need one.

Is the no comply to frontside bluntslide bound to be the most coveted skateboard maneuver of 2014? Exhibit A, Exhibit B.

The new Mira Conyo video, MC2 is now online. You know New York is big when you can watch an entire video filmed in Manhattan with pretty much no easily recognizable spots. Maybe that’ll change with more people venturing up to the Heights on account of the new skatepark, but definitely refreshing to watch for now.

Eli Reed has a six-minute video interview up on VHS Mag (which is apparently “the Quartersnacks of Asia.”) He discusses Vehicle, a lot of the New York skaters from the nineties, Tokyo, etc. There’s a bit of skating in it too.

Billy Rohan talks about his “first New York video part” from EST 3, which includes the top 10 noseslide into midday 7th Avenue foot traffic and the worst song ever.

Spam is the new video from The Beerics. Cool spots, solid skating, and an #indie soundtrack. The slam at 4:22 might may rival our past entrant for slam of the year.

Frozen in Carbonite with some thoughts on the amazing FTC book.

KCDC has a quick interview with Joey Pepper on their site.

For a daily dose of idiocy, read this article about the upcoming full-scale renovation of Love Park. The mayor’s office really thinks Love is “a national and international attraction” for anyone besides the people they’ve spent years trying to keep out of it?

There’s a new old raw footage clip from the Static III days over on the Theories site.

Nothing to do with skateboarding, but Roctakon has some Best of 2013 picks over on the Turntable Lab site. Glad to see we’re introducing the concept of being at terms with Drake to the broader world. (BTW the three best tracks of 2013 are actually “Shit,” the ATL “Shit” remix and “Paranoid” / anything else with a “Mustard on the beat ho” drop before it. Oh and this obvs.)

Fingers crossed on SURFBOARD being the next Vine phenomenon a la “When the beat drops.”

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: The closest thing to a crossover you’re ever going to see Tim Duncan do. There’s also this this NBA.com countdown of 2013’s top 10 crossovers. To no surprise, Kyrie has three of them.

Quote of the Week: “I’ve been on your site before…there were too many words on it.” — A Girl. Bonus! This was definitely the tweet of the year.

Only two more days until Street Lottery 2

Frozen in Carbonite puts young Americans’ declining interest in automobiles into consideration while making the case for the Honda Civic being the archetypical skate car. “The mountains of cash that pros collected during the late 90s shoe/board sale boom sounded the death knell for the Civic, as dudes could now afford luxury automobiles. The Muskalade in Feedback was the tipping point here, followed by Kalis’ infamous BMW. This trend culminated in Jereme Rogers’ Aston Martin, the repossession of which symbolized the current industry contraction.” R.I.P. Skate cars.

You guys can all stop posting Instagram videos now, because there will never be anything this good on the skateboard-themed corner of the the ‘Gram ever again. O.T.T. posts way more on Vine anyway. R.I.P. Instagram Video.

Zombie movie-themed New York skateboarding from the mid-90s. R.I.P. BAM.

Here are volumes 200 and 201 of the Beef Patty crew’s video blog series, here’s volume eight of throwaways from the Death Video crew, and here is volume six of Billy Rohan’s “Illumignarly” craze cam series.

Waters and Army found a new teamrider from E-Block, who does one of the more impressive J. Kwon lines ever (that’s saying a lot…), and then stops by New York for a few more impressive maneuvers.

“Dweeb,” the new mini video from the time travelers that brought you “Twomanji,” lets us know that Billy McFeely’s Solo Jazz part was actually filmed in 1994, and later re-filmed in 2013.

As the season for “Summer Trip to New York” clips begins to wind down, some Australians come through with a clip of their northeast corridor-spanning vacation, which contains a few good nollie back heels and frontside flips.

Does this have anything to do with the fact that skateboarders typically don’t learn how to skateboard in the middle of a major city street?

There’s something reassuring in knowing that George Clooney uses the word “dude.”

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: This happening in Miami and not at an away game made it so much sweeter.

Quote of the Week: “You’re the first person to ever walk out of this building holding a book.” — Pookie to T-Bird regarding 21 Spring Street. Also, FYI 4 da ladies.

Enter the 36 Chambers turned twenty this past weekend. Now would be a good time to stop making Wu-Tang “parody” logos and editing skate clips to songs off it.
