March Madness Bro

March Madness starts tomorrow. If it wasn’t supposed to be 54 degrees, and we didn’t find college basketball incredibly hard to follow beyond a casual game here and there, we’d probably be watching. Always been in agreement with the NBA:Hollywood / NCAA:Student Film analogy, but can’t imagine any of tomorrow’s match-ups being worse than a 2014 Knicks or Lakers game, and both of those teams are on national TV tonight. ESPN and TNT really need to instate a flex schedule man…

In any case, Frozen in Carbonite got all Grantland on us, and formed a bracket about a topic dear to everyone: 1990s skateboarding. Voting for the first round ends tomorrow (March 20th), and this is what the results look like now. Good luck picking between Igei v.s. Pupecki and Lotti v.s. Drake Jones. (Currently “active” pros with boards out are omitted from the bracket.) Vote here.

Also in the spirit of the season, Nike SB is releasing two rival colorways on Saturday (one for Georgetown, the other for UNC), and we put together a little video for the UNC one with Connor Champion / Black Sheep Skateshop down in Charlotte. It’s nothing you’ve never seen before — a generic cruiser clip filmed at TF West, but it represents a QS milestone in that we found something relevant to edit to the SportsCenter theme. (FYI: Having seen “Top Ten Plays” more than one time on any given morning is the telltale sign of needing to leave the house for most QS employees. Or at least those with cable.)

And anyone who says “March Madness is the best event in American sports” on account of the kids “having nothing to lose” or whatever is just trying to be #controversial. Opening weekend of the NBA playoffs > everything. Maybe not in the east though…

A lot of interviews went online this past week, and Frozen in Carbonite’s interview with Chris Franzen might be the best of the bunch. He talks about L.A. County (“We were just a bunch of rejects from the industry”), switch 360 flips over Cali tables off flat, and stuff about the business of skateboarding in the nineties that other interviews may be reluctant to address. Must-read for anyone who is a fan of that much mythologized decade.

The Dime crew compiles all the monumental achievements that have occurred while a skater was wearing a yellow tee shirt.

Kanye’s inane, more-calculated-than-people-care-to-admit rants seem to be the latest avant garde skate clip #musicsupervision choice, but when is someone going to edit a clip to DJ Khaled’s McDondald’s commercials?

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: ~~Metta World Peace~~ Ron Artest got bought out by the Knicks last week. The Artest era in New York was short, underwhelming, injury-ridden, and worst of all, a decade late, but to his credit, he did provide the team with possibly its sole highlight of the 2013-2014 season.

Chapman, New York’s longest standing skateboard producers, relaunched their website. It features an awesome archive of past boards, ranging from old Zoo decks, Supreme art boards, the short lived Illuminati Skateboards, and others.

SkateZines.com is a new project from the crew behind SkateAndAnnoy.com, which puts itself to the seemingly impossible task of cataloging all available skate zines of today and info on where to obtain them.

Is the no comply to frontside bluntslide bound to be the most coveted skateboard maneuver of 2014? Exhibit A, Exhibit B.

The new Mira Conyo video, MC2 is now online. You know New York is big when you can watch an entire video filmed in Manhattan with pretty much no easily recognizable spots. Maybe that’ll change with more people venturing up to the Heights on account of the new skatepark, but definitely refreshing to watch for now.

Eli Reed has a six-minute video interview up on VHS Mag (which is apparently “the Quartersnacks of Asia.”) He discusses Vehicle, a lot of the New York skaters from the nineties, Tokyo, etc. There’s a bit of skating in it too.

Billy Rohan talks about his “first New York video part” from EST 3, which includes the top 10 noseslide into midday 7th Avenue foot traffic and the worst song ever.

Spam is the new video from The Beerics. Cool spots, solid skating, and an #indie soundtrack. The slam at 4:22 might may rival our past entrant for slam of the year.

Frozen in Carbonite puts young Americans’ declining interest in automobiles into consideration while making the case for the Honda Civic being the archetypical skate car. “The mountains of cash that pros collected during the late 90s shoe/board sale boom sounded the death knell for the Civic, as dudes could now afford luxury automobiles. The Muskalade in Feedback was the tipping point here, followed by Kalis’ infamous BMW. This trend culminated in Jereme Rogers’ Aston Martin, the repossession of which symbolized the current industry contraction.” R.I.P. Skate cars.
