Deep Dive — Diego Todd on Ventura & ‘Hockey X’

Intro, Interview & Edit by Farran Golding
Principal Archival Footage by Geoff Browne & Matt Schmidt

Traversing the same streets countless times, over years and years, only to discover a hidden in-plain-sight new way of skating them is a well-understood skateboard phenomenon.

Diego Todd’s closing part in Hockey X was the result of combing his beachside hometown of Ventura, California in such a way.

Equipped with an attitude reminiscent of the goofball savant from a coming-of-age movie, Diego ducked down familiar streets for new takes and ticked off spots which had sat in the back of his mind since before he even had a driver’s license.

Our latest Deep Dive lifts the curtain on the local folklore and perilous spots tackled by Diego in the part that turned him pro.

“That could have been me.” The Guardian spoke to several Black skateboarders — including our dear friend Aaron Wiggs, along with Harold Hunter Foundation chair + architect of The Black List, Patrick Kigongo — about their experiences in the shadow of Tyre Nichols’ murder at the hands of police.

“Yeah! At Glendale High!” Farran Golding had Nelly Morville talk over her Paymaster part about how the Limosine connection came to be + filming for their inaugural video.

Columbus Circle continues to enjoy its reign as the spot of the winter: Christian Kerr just dropped an edit with a days’ worth of Columbus footage, and yes, you get to see Gabe Tennen shred in it! It’s a foregone conclusion someone is going to drop a one-spot part from there by May, right?

Tried To Tell Them It Was Boot Season

Listen to the soothing sounds of Nick Boserio’s voice — like light rain on a windowpane or cascading waves — for over an hour on the latest episode of The Bunt. Bar-none one of the best people you could have on a skate trip ❤️

This is really sick of The LA Times to do: The Oral History of the Hollywood High 16, with stories from many of the names most closely associated with the spot. (#lol at the visible QS sticker on the headline photo.) Can’t wait for The New York Times to do the oral history of the Courthouse Drop.

Our buddy Max Hull uploaded “I’M HERE,” his short submitted to the New York Bicycle Film Festival, onto his YouTube. Not skate-related obvs, but a very simple yet beautiful story :) “We outside, not inside.”

Feel like this should’ve been on the repost circuit way heavier… On Friday, Stussy dropped an eight-minute promo by Antosh Cimoszko featuring what amounts to small parts’ worth of footage from Aaron Loreth, Diego Todd, Jesse Alba and Hugo Boserup + appearances from others.

Also related: A few minutes of Diego Todd loosies.

The Halloween Stickers crew dropped HSS2 last week. No full Liam McCabe part, but that FedEx line is absolutely fucking insane. Not sure if anybody has done two flip tricks down the sixes before.
