A New Dick Rizzo & Paul Young Link-Up… in Glorious Hi-8

Dick Rizzo parts always contain their share of Easter egg nods to east coast skate history — whether it’s Mother‘s Bobbito shout-out and splice of The Photosynthesis Hamburger™ or Grand Prairie‘s desaturated, largely flip trick-less pursuit of spots that would’ve fit into a would-be Eastern Exposure 4.

And his latest, with Paul Young behind the lens + editing deck (Down By Law due out 2023!), stretches these nods into an entire concept. In other words, it’s a 2022 skate part that could seamlessly fit into a VHS tape of Peep This or opened any nineties Real video, and it comes with that glorious Hi-8 audio that P-Rod was talking about.

Hit You Off Management Presents… ‘Museum of Sex’

When the city began to shut down last spring — before anybody knew wtf was about to happen — skateboarders all had the same thought, and they all wound up at Big Screen Plaza.

Soon, the hotel decided “Fuck this,” boarded the entire park off, and left it like that to this day.

Skateboard endeavors moved northward towards CBS, which was heavily featured in John’s Vid (a video that simultaneously feels like it came out three months ago and three years ago), until that spot got knobbed.

It turns out that the real party was at the Museum all along — a spot that 4Ply learned was the most frequent #QSTOP10-featured New York spot in 2020. Considering there has been a generation (two?) of skateboarders who have not experienced a period of the Museum being a go, it’s no wonder everyone flocked there to take advantage of the glitch.

Paul Young logged some heavy hours there this past spring and summer, and came back with this edit featuring Mark Humienik, Joe Russo, Nick Ferro, Vin Perso, Joseph Delgado, German Nieves, Ben Tenner, Myles Underwood, Dana Ericson and Dick Rizzo.

In the blink of an eye, we’ve had a decade of Bronze, a homie video series turned brand that reshaped the runtime required to deem a project “full-length.” Quasi transcended their birthright as a successor to Alien Workshop, carved out a singular path, and released two of the best longform productions in recent memory. The moniker “HUF” now covers not only the guy whose video parts defined less is more, but a longstanding brand.

Dick Rizzo – or Richie to those who know him — has in one way or another, intersected with these moments in contemporary skateboarding, which makes it all the more surprising that his story hasn’t been more thoroughly explored.

Favorite Spot With Dick Rizzo on Grant’s Tomb

The “Favorite Spot” series was overdue for a New York edition — it has been three installments, and not a single one has been in the northeast.

If you told anybody who was skating Grant’s Tomb in the days when it was a backup spot after you got kicked off the Columbia campus that soon, the ledge into the double bank would become its most-documented feature, they’d have a tough time believing you. Dick Rizzo has somehow turned it into a fixture throughout his video parts, dating as far back as Paul Young’s 2012 Nevermind video.
