“Efficiency wants to make the world available: controllable, plannable, predictable. Skateboarding works differently. You cannot plan it however you like, force it, or optimize it reliably. Sometimes the trick works, sometimes it does not. Sometimes the world answers – and sometimes it gives you a shinner. That is exactly the point. Skateboarding does not guarantee status, safe progression, or return without risk. But when it answers, it answers personally.” Really enjoyed the new Bubble article by Dr. Veith Kilberth (former pro, sports sociologist, and co-owner of a skatepark planning firm), which unpacks the reasons for a decreased amount of young skaters today.
Jake Todd and the good people at Nocturnal Skateshop put out a new Jackson Deets part full of Philly crust, and cameos from many familiar Philly faces.
QS-favorite Trey Wade uploaded a rough cut of his most recent part, which dropped back in the spring. Trey also has some clips in Juan Reyna’s new video, NineFiveSix.
Obviously every new GX edit is an immediate click, but you gotta wonder what the reaction would be if the footy in the Willow remix edit all went to a single part. Either way, must watch ;)
“It was a matter of deconstructing or unlearning the usual way of thinking about not only how skateparks are made but what a skatepark is.” Our correspondent Farran Golding wrote about a skatepark’s metamorphosis from dilapidated Y2K relic to …perfect flatground — and why that’s a massive upgrade.
Jack Olson was the latest guest on The Bunt.
EVGrieve’s Holy Ride coverage is really good. This one dude on IG censored it though?
R.I.P. Pearl Diner, up the block from Pyramid Ledges.
QS Sports Desk 🏀 — Godspeed, Russell Westbrook. We were always rooting for Russ to eek out a situation where he leaves the game with a ring on, but he’ll join Iverson, Nash, CP3, et al. as guys who revolutionized how basketball is played, and how fun it is to watch. Pretty sure during the ’16-’17 season, he had 50% of the Plays of the Week. Can’t believe that MVP year was nine fucking years ago.
Quote of the Week 🗣 “I don’t get hungover on the east coast.” — Zach Sheats
It has been two slow past news weeks at the QS office and it’s August, so that must mean it’s In A Silent Way season.
