Catching Up

Here are a few things that surfaced in the past two weeks. China didn’t have YouTube or Vimeo, and 90% of the skate-related portion of the internet involves those two sites. Sorry if you’re seeing week-old content, bro.

Sweet Paradise, a once crucial corner of the constantly-declining Barmuda Triangle, is slated to close for good in the near-future. Grab a drink in it’s current dilapidated state, and share stories with some friends. Thanks for the memories, and all the free drinks. Thanks for hosting Galen and Danny’s birthday three years in a row. Thanks for hosting the Danny Weiss Dis-Own-A-Thon. One less place for girls to get a skater boyfriend.

Turns out that the so-bad-it’s-good “masterpiece” ABC Skateshop video from 2000, Remedy, has been online for the past year. Though it’s awful in a variety of ways (what other video dedicates a part to harassing NYU students?), it is still a nice glimpse into what New York skating looked and felt like twelve years ago. Fun watch if you’re bored, feeling nostalgic, and at least six beers deep.

Everyone has seen these Bill Eppridge photos of New York skateboarding in the 1960s for Life magazine, but not enough attention has been given to this particular photo. Proof that time travel exists, or merely Shawn Powers’ extra futuristicly swagged out great uncle?

A story came out yesterday stating that Max B’s appeal was denied, meaning he would remain in jail until at least 2042. Mr. Montana placed a called to Mr. Wingate to confirm that this is all false, and insisted that a court date was imminent.

First of all…28 points, 8 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals from a Chinese Harvard graduate who apparently likes blue Gatorade and is being paid $200K on a team with three guys getting $15mil+. Did the Mayans predict this? Maybe the world is ending.

Shit Skateboarders Say

Sweet Waste in the world’s greatest tee shirt, and Lil’ Wayne dressed like a 12-year-old girl who just used her $100 Hot Topic gift card from Christmas at the Monmouth Mall. The Wayne coverage on QS has come full circle.

Akira Mowatt’s company, After Midnight New York, just dropped a team montage. The illustrious Geo Moya has the intro honors, so it’s a must-watch.

Portland, Maine isn’t exactly the first (or fifth…or tenth…) city you think of when it comes to skateboarding in the northeast. ’96 Mentality is a new mini-video out of Portland that gives a glimpse into their scene. It’s super well-edited, and the tricks and vibe give it a nineties feel, even though it’s all HD.

Here is the final throwaway clip from the PFP2 video, based out of that region just north of New York City and sponsored by 2nd Nature. You can watch the full first video here. P.S. “Get It On Tonite” is the far superior Montell Jordan single.

It’s sick that outer-borough (Brooklyn) kids can make a ten-minute video, all filmed in New York, but with barely any recognizable spots in it. Just goes to show you how big this city is. Watch the Slime video here. Also, this means the turnaround on someone skating to song off Rich Forever was what, one week?

Want to re-live Tompkins circa 2004? Watch this Super-8 reel. Some of it might look familiar because it was used in Lurkers 2.

Taji, Leo, Billy Rohan, and No Pants Day. Surprising that it has taken this long for someone to skate that fountain gap in front of the 42nd Street Library.

Rob Harris shares his of-the-moment jams on the DQM site. Travie, 2Chainz, Future, and a bunch of other stuff we’ve never heard of (Elvis?) is on there.

There’s not much to say about the Mark Suciu part that hasn’t already been said. (It’s scary that switch backside noseblunts down handrails just get quickly tossed in the middle of parts nowadays though.) Frozen in Carbonite makes an interesting observation though — Is everyone going to forget about it in two days? Is that really the shelf-life of a web video part these days? Do people still talk about the Dylan Reider Gravis part, the Lucas Puig TWS video, or the Torey Pudwill part from the summer?

We finally made it onto Instagram. Follow @ Quartersnacks. It’s late because somebody registered “quartersnacks” before we had the chance to, and we decided to avoid it altogether out of stubbornness. Turns out that dude is a total bro, and was down to give up the username. Thanks to the homie Aidan for being a good sport about it. Never knew how many people were actually on Instacraze either, it’s wild. (Funny how everyone has the same cell phone now.)

Green Diamond 2011 leftovers video. Features Nick Boserio killing it, Malfa utilizing the newly-reinvogorated slappy crook, and Brian Anderson footage.

Frozen in Carbonite on parallels between Oscar Wilde and the new Sk8Mafia video. “I think Oscar Wilde might possibly have skated, but not extensively. He would have morphed into the kid who sits at the spot, getting up occasionally to try a few soft-footed nollie b/s bigspins, commenting on everyone’s style ‘n shit.”

There’s a nice feature with Steven Lora (“Lil’ Steven”) on Slap right now. A lot of people linked the video for it, but neglected to mention it was a full-on article. Good to see the young kids who rip at 12th Street every day getting some coverage. The catch frame on the back lip flip-out sequence is solid.

Billy McFeely is a sick actor.

In all honesty, the Skavenger BMX video is better than most of the skate videos to come out this year. If you make skate videos, you could learn a thing or ten from these dudes.

If you didn’t get a new du-rag in your stocking this Christmas, at least you can watch the latest “Krispy Du-Rag” clip with your dusty one on. Switch front 5050s up hubbas, Rob Gonyon skating to Future, etc.

Josh Stewart’s site has Poisonous Products DVDs for sale. $10, and you don’t need to wait for it to arrive from Canada.

Summer technically ends when school starts, but if you don’t go to school, science says it starts on the 23rd of September. Enjoy the next month…

E.J. has a photo gallery up on his site / portfolio that features shots of many modern day Tompkins legends, covering everyone from Slickie Boy to Jason Dill. On a related note, we are beginning preliminary research on our Tompkins Wiki / historical database, and are looking for volunteers or interns willing to be compensated in Westway drink tickets.

The homie Connor Champion from North Carolina has a sick new Mag Minute. One of the finest frontside crooked grinders in skateboarding today. He’s also good at choosing songs to skate to, hence the use of Petey Pablo and “Pourin’ Up.”

Haven’t been uptown in a minute, but Dane sent over a tip saying that the Morningside School on 122nd Street (three block / manual pad) isn’t skateable anymore due to renovations: “Everything is fenced of and boarded up (except the rocks that you can ride on.)”

Columbus Park has also been fenced off for construction. So far, it only looks like they are tearing up the ground, meaning that there may be a chance that the kinked ledge and whatever else would remain.

Between Amare and P. Rod “talking switch hardflips,” Wilson Chandler’s newfound interest in skateboarding (yeah, the “Kick Push” reference ruins it…a lot), and Landry Fields claiming he would have pursued pro skateboarding if not basketball, the 2010-2011 pre-Melo trade Knicks should contact Quartersnacks to do some consulting on a skate/basketball league if this lockout eats up too much of the season. Maybe we could even sign Steve Nash to veteran’s minimum…
