The Obligatory Summer iPhone Edit

On Monday, once-relevant East Village skateboard blog, The Green Diamond (also once generously referred to by Guy Riza, Quartersnacks.com’s European of the Year – 2012, as “the number two skate blog”), posted up the latest entry to its “Diamond Days” series. The clip sought to recapture the hearts of the Green Diamond’s old fanbase, which initially fell in love with the magic of Yaje’s shorter days, Brett Land’s wallie abilities, and Kyle Iles’ lost hip-hop tapes — a magic that still burns for the Green Diamond only when Malfa skates. Despite promises of a general return to form and being more “street,” the nine-minute video is fraught with convenient exceptions to its own rule of being solely #street. It is not street in the slightest. It is sarcastic and offensive to longtime fans.

And so, to show what’s really hot in the streets, we have revived our dormant iPhone video series, Velez’s Corner, for an actual #street oriented affair. It is, as a person qualified to speak on the matter would put it, “so street like asphalt.” The only “exception” to the rule we let slide is a possibly goth kid doing a darkslide at the L.E.S. Park, so it’s not really even an exception. Filmed by Josh Velez.

QS shirts have been spotted in some odd locations: “Holi Thirteen” by Brandon Kuzma. (P.S. If you’re still trying to get an early order in, e-mail quartersnacks [at] gmail, though quantities remain limited. Otherwise, our webstore will re-open in June with new product. Supreme New York and Exit Skateshop in Philadelphia also have them in stock.)

Don’t you guys miss when the Green Diamond was more #street? :(

These guys are still mad street.

The French blog, Café Créme, has a new interview with Quim Cardona. His 2011 Chrome Ball interview goes deeper on some of the topics they discuss though.

The Wall Street Velvet Rope Bail. Worth watching two or ten times.

NY Skateboarding rounded up New York-related bits from recent magazines, which include the photo side of Adidas’ New York barge last year and Walker Ryan’s insane trick at the Courthouse.

Black Dave has a “First Try Fridays” segment with Eric Koston over on the Berrics.

The new Cliché video, Bon Voyage, is out on iTunes today, and most shops have the DVD in stock. The video is what you expect (though a bit less European given some recent roster additions), including a solid part from every grown-up’s favorite skateboarder, Lucas Puig. The line he does at Pulaski Park is likely the best line you’ll see all year (seeing pros just do a simple, not-Torey-Pudwills-long backside tailslide on a ledge is awesome, especially in 2013.) Also, “Best Line of 2012” title holder, Pete Eldridge, continues to skate with cigarettes and has a solid shared part with J.B. Gillet. If anyone at Cliché is interested in producing an American rap re-edit of Puig’s part, we’re all ears.

#Art Updates: 1) Jeremy Elkin put together a video of Jahmal Williams’ recent Hopps installation at Labor Skateshop. 2) “Eastern Suns,” an art thing which features Jahmal, Dan Drehobl, Bosco, 30 Pack Pat, and others will have an opening reception at Da Fish on Sunday, May 5th at 7 P.M. Flyer here.

Trife Moronic Look of the Week: They actually knobbed this “sculpture” on Houston and Broadway.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Nate Robinson (yes, Nate Robinson) came one point shy of Michael Jordan’s record for post points in a playoff quarter in a triple overtime win over the Nets on Saturday. Is Nets gear 80% off everywhere yet?

How insane is it that the President of the United States walked out to DJ Khaled as intro music?

‘What About Them Cracks Paulie?’ — Dece Vid Extras

The homepage is in full aggregator mode today, so here’s another way to waste fifteen minutes amidst some late-winter blues. Though the industry standard name for video extras in the post-DVD era is “B-sides,” Rob Harris decided to flaunt his retained knowledge of SAT words and their Latin origins with Dece Addendum, a fifteen-minute raw footage reel of throwaway, slams, goofs and Yaje Popson footage from Dece Vid.

The first person to re-edit it to Travis Porter or Future wins a six-pack of Kronenbourg and half a sandwich from Parm. Re-watch the original video if you need to waste another twenty minutes. Some non-aggregated content should be in the works shortly.

R.I.P. Donald Byrd. At the very least, rap nerds can easily recognize Byrd’s music via the sample Premier chopped up for “N.Y. State of Mind” or the loop from Black Moon’s “Buck ‘Em Down.” He was also on Guru’s first Jazzmatazz compilation. Though not a skater favorite like Dave Brubeck, check out the 2002 Uprise Skateshop video, Suprise, which features two Donald Byrd songs (“Change” and “City Life”), not to mention Ryan Giese and Steve Nish appearances.

Black Dave made it. No, he really made it. B.D. will be opening up for Project Pat on Tuesday, February 26th at Santos Party House. Congratulations to B.D. on this monumental step in his career. And don’t worry, we’ll remind you about this sixty times between now and the end of the month.

Sign of the times: Skateboarder magazine will no longer come in print form.

With the demise of Gravis, Ripped Laces speculates on hypothetical Dylan Reider shoe sponsor scenarios. Skater free agency is not as fun as NBA free agency.

Slicky Boy sighting in the Stefan Janoski “Off the Grid” segment and a New Jersey-based (!!!) Jason Dill sighting in the montage from the Feelin’ Friendly video.

Speaking of Jersey, Jersey Dave got back behind the lens and made a Jersey City junk spot montage. Always fun to use the word “Jersey” three times in one sentence.

Diamond Days #66. “What’s that Chief Keef song where the hook is about his squad and there are like gunshots going off in the background?”

CNN (the news network, not the duo behind the top five all-time rap album), has an incredible set of photos by Mike Belleme showcasing the skate scene in Asheville, North Carolina. If you recall, Jake Johnson had a lot of great things to say about skateboarding in Asheville.

Hey Marc Jacobs, if you guys need consulting help on, say, simple things like putting trucks on facing the right direction, our services are available in exchange for huge suitcases of American currency.

Is this art or something? Rihanna’s song is rad, dude.

Palace eBay Watch: Ironic parody shirts now available.

Rob Harris, now several years removed from a SVA education, is defying jinxes left and right. The most obvious jinx at hand is the unavoidable-in-98-percent-of-cases “sophomore jinx,” where a second project doesn’t live up to the magic of the first. Dece Vid happens to be an excellent companion piece to the “Tompkins Bench Most Discussed Topic of the Year — 2008” award winner, Rich Mahogany. You could argue that it’s even better, given the timely fashion of its release. Which brings us to the second jinx — the unavoidable-in-100-percent of cases “SVA Delay” — a curse that prolongs an announced video’s production anywhere from two-to-six years past “deadline” due to artistic conflicts. Prior to today, there was no precedent for a SVA student releasing a second video after graduation. Rob just set this new tradition on the right track by sticking to his *FIRST* release date.

Dece Vid features the elusive Yaje Popson part that was discussed when his Independent clip came out this past summer. It also includes a ton of bros and some bros who are pro, with mini-parts from Alex Olson, David Clark, Nick Boserio, Black Dave, Danny Brady, Brian Delatorre and others. There’s 345 days left to go in 2013, but Malfa might have part of the year.
