Turning the Page

Angel and the Papi Brand dudes dropped the new installment of their Bronx-centric video series, and it’s the most extensive one yet: Bill$ 4 Inflation went live last week. Features great parts from Angel Fonseca (who’s still getting better and better) and Justin Adams + other homies, and a lot of dives into Bronx spots that only the locals skate.

Nothing is touching Limo edits right now. It’s not even that much skating, but the eight minutes fly by in Limosine’s North Carolina trip video featuring the entire team.

Ryan Mettz made an extended edition remix of Max Palmer’s “Spiked Off” part from March with more guest clips, B-sides and unseen clips.

Feels like fuckin’ yesterday: The Shady One dove into some old footage and made a “Summer With Friends 2016” montage that provides a vivid snapshot of downtown Manhattan skateboarding just seven short years ago. Features pretty much anyone you would’ve seen in a Johnny Wilson video circa 2016.

“There also might be a slight difference in the value of technicality. I think a nollie crook means more to us out here than it may out west to you.” Heckride has a #longform interview with the man behind the lens of many of your favorite clips, Paul Young.

“Then I counted Tyshawn’s part and he only has 32 tricks in Blessed which was his S.O.T.Y. part. It made me realize that it’s not necessarily the quantity of tricks that makes a part good.” Korahn Gayle chats about some of his biggest influences for Slam City Skates’ “Visuals” series.

Can’t imagine many local residents are bummed about this, but something for the “Summer Trip to New York” video-makers to keep in mind: you’re not gonna have an easy time getting an Airbnb in New York.

Deep Dive — Dick Rizzo & Paul Young on Hi8 and East Coast Influences

Video, Interview & Intro by Farran Golding

The shared output of Dick Rizzo and Paul Young is cine-literature — one with touch points and tributes surrounding many of what we could call “heritage” east coast texts.

We touched on exactly that in regards to the pair’s Hi8 Half Cab project for Vans last summer. However, we took the investigation further, digging through the tapes and speaking to both Richie and Paul about the nuance, folklore, cellar doors and sessions with Uncle Freddy that underwrite their ode to what came before.

A New Dick Rizzo & Paul Young Link-Up… in Glorious Hi-8

Dick Rizzo parts always contain their share of Easter egg nods to east coast skate history — whether it’s Mother‘s Bobbito shout-out and splice of The Photosynthesis Hamburger™ or Grand Prairie‘s desaturated, largely flip trick-less pursuit of spots that would’ve fit into a would-be Eastern Exposure 4.

And his latest, with Paul Young behind the lens + editing deck (Down By Law due out 2023!), stretches these nods into an entire concept. In other words, it’s a 2022 skate part that could seamlessly fit into a VHS tape of Peep This or opened any nineties Real video, and it comes with that glorious Hi-8 audio that P-Rod was talking about.
