Tompkins Jam with B.A. & Friends on Thursday, 08/22

Opting against the traditional skatepark route, Nike SB will utilize the greatest non-spot in skateboard history for its Brian Anderson shoe launch event on Thursday. Not since the enterprising days of the early-2000s has an actual skate company chose our beloved T.F. as the site of a major skate event (shout out to Leo Gutman #2003gameofskate.) There will be boxes, rails, a launch or two, and perhaps even a quarterpipe, an obstacle completely unfamiliar to Tompkins Square Park patrons in the modern T.F. era. Please note that this marks the first time more than two non-trash can obstacles will simultaneously occupy space at Tompkins since its heyday, so the significance of this event cannot be overstated.

Anyway, come celebrate the launch of the new Project B.A. shoe with Brian Anderson, Unlocking the Truth, and friends (and probably the Dunions) at Tompkins Square Park this Thursday, August 22nd, from 12 P.M. to 4 P.M. Food and refreshments will be provided for all those who cannot otherwise afford them.

Daniel Lebron Flocka James — The QS Reel

In our most recent Euro appreciation post, some commenters admirably made the case for Daniel Lebron’s inclusion on the imaginary Mount Rushmore of low impact European skaters in their thirties, even suggesting a fifth slot be carved out to add him. The only real “knock” on Lebron when assessed alongside the Javier, Jesus, et al. is that he doesn’t have as deep of a videography as the others. Aside from the LaLa Land and L.A. County parts, which are both from the same time period, he has since appeared mostly in shared sections and montages.

As a consolation, here is a reel of Dani’s footage from a few Nike trips we were a part of in 2010 and 2011. All of it has appeared on the site before, but never in one dedicated video. The majority of it was filmed just messing around, which ended up yielding two of the more memorable bits of [typically disposable] T.F. footage in recent history. All of this dude’s tricks have a habit of looking absurdly solid without veering anywhere close to robot territory — a prime example of MACBA-honed flatground skills. He’s also one of skateboarding’s great heelflippers, and not in a way that overcompensates for a deficient kickflip or anything…

You Cannot Be Serious: Gino Pushing

There is a great new Nike commercial that features “Gino pushing.” Ending a skateboarding commercial off in Times Square, or even acknowledging Times Square in anything skate-related comes off corny and touristy 99.9% of the time. Times Square has a lot to do with New York, but absolutely nothing to do with New York skateboarding — even your typical “Summer Trip to NY!” montage knows to avoid it.

BUT, if you want to have Gino Iannucci fit into a lineage of James Dean circa 1955 (the photo was taken several months before he died), and a 1980s John McEnroe Nike ad campaign referencing the original Dean photograph, that would apply to the .1% space available for exceptions. It’s like the skateboard-equivalent of the final scene in Boogie Nights where Mark Wahlberg is doing an impression of Robert De Niro doing an impression of Marlon Brando. Or something.

Nike SB Chronicles NYC Premiere Info

Nike is doing an online premiere for SB Chronicles this Saturday (December 3rd) at 6:30 P.M. If you prefer a more traditional video premiere environment (i.e. you’d rather watch it projected on a huge screen instead of a 13″ laptop), Bowery Stadium is hosting a premiere on the same day at 7 P.M. Stadium is located at 276 Bowery, right at the southwest intersection of Houston Street, next to Pulino’s. Take the F to Second Avenue and it’s half-a-block away. The video features Youness Amrani, Chet Childress, Clark Hassler, Stefan Janoski, Lewis Marnell, Daniel Shimizu, Grant Taylor (so that Thrasher S.O.T.Y. part was basically throwaway?), and Wieger Van Wageningen. You can read up on the video and watch the two trailers here.

In anticipation of the video, here is a compilation of Youness’ footage from our summer 2010 project with SB. Knowing him, he’d probably say all of this footage sucks. It doesn’t. (Though it is a notch or two below tricks like this on the intensity scale.) And that tail-less C.I.A. line is maybe the best thing to ever be in a Quartersnacks clip, short of Alex Mosley using the lobby of the Met Life building as runway to ollie a double-set. Having seen a lot of great skateboarders skate in person, Youness is near the top of the list in terms of people that make tricks look deceptively easy. See below. His part should be an entertaining one.
