#TRENDWATCH2013: Televisions

TVs are the first must-have commodity in the impending 2013 “Trip to New York” cycle (slated to begin in April.) With recent studies indicating that Americans watch up to 3 1/2 more hours of TV on computers than on actual televisions, many TVs are ending up in the trash. Naturally, northeastern skateboarders who love skating garbage took notice, and TVs began to gain on the refrigerator’s marketshare in the “Most Frequently Skated Household Appliance” category. #Trendwatch2013 analysts expect that tricks on televisions will graduate from mere novelties, to modern-day staples of the “authentic” New York web clip checklist. Tricks on abandoned cars and wallrides on porous surfaces (e.g. chain link fences) have also been able to make this leap in recent years.

Could this be one giant skaters-go-to-art-school-and-get-crazy-ideas-from-smoking-too-much concoction intended to be a critique of America’s TV addiction? Is it performance art? Are we on the brink of scanning Craigslist curb alerts for free TVs instead of thinking about spots to skate before we call our friends on Saturday mornings? Did @SeinfeldToday fall off? Is there an industrious crew of skaters performance artists intent on making the first-ever all-TV skate clip? And if so, will they consider Kingpin Skinny Pimp, Yo Gotti and 8ball’s bass-heavy masterpiece, “TVs,” for music supervision? Does anyone like Criminal Intent more than SVU?

The answer to all of these questions, except the last two, is probably “yes.”

The Events That Defined New York City Skateboarding in 2012: 10-6 + 2013 Predictions

lou ruining skateboarding

70% chance of snow for the last weekend of 2012. New Year’s Eve plans? Nets head coach suggestions? Indoor skate spot recommendations? Highest bidder for an unauthorized House of Vans key duplicate? Who’s excited for the new season of Girls? Previously: #s 25-21, 20-16, 15-11. Expect 5-1 on New Year’s Eve.

10. Lurker Lou Ruins Skateboarding

Skateboarders hate everything. It becomes more evident by the day, as the anonymity provided by Hella Clips comments supplants the Slap forum as the skateboard internet’s epicenter of negativity. But we won’t stand for that negativity in our reality shows! This past spring, Lurker Lou — who, looking at it as objectively as possible, didn’t “hate” *that* bad — spewed his bearded criticisms on a bunch of youngsters looking to “make it” via the “One in a Million” reality show fiasco. He hurt feelings, crushed dreams, snapped boards and ruined any fun there was to be had in riding a skateboard for the remainder of human existence, which unfortunately, did not end on December 21st. (No existence is better than existence on an earth with Lou.)

What a jerk!

T.F. Report: Labor Skateshop’s recent gift to the Tompkins community has temporarily been re-located to Avenue D for unknown reasons.

“Just like skaters, tennis dudes obsess over the most minute details of their ‘setups,’ like the type of nylon with which they string their racquets, the tape with which they grip their handles, shoes, all that shit.” — Frozen in Carbonite with a Freudian shoe review of the Nike SB Challenge Court that expands on skate/tennis parallels mentioned by Gino Iannucci, among other things.

There is a Torey Goodall interview in the new issue of Grey Skate Mag.

Yes! Skateboarding gets it right! November 19: A Twitter inquiry is made as to whether or not someone has skated to Ginuwine / Timbaland’s “Pony,” in expectance of an obvious “No.” November 23: The winner of a Manny Santiago re-edit contest coincidentally re-edits his part to…Ginuwine, “Pony.” Thank you David Jojola.

The New York Times profiled Supreme last week. They predictably chose an awful headliner photo. Also related: Have you guys heard about Supreme’s collaboration with Apple? Their limited run of custom MacBooks start at $999,995.

What a horrible last name.

Some young’ns up in Vancouver and Calgary made a sick twenty-minute skate video entitled “Serenity Now.” Even QS has yet to a reach a point where clips are edited to Tyga. “You never could compete with Lloyd Braun!”

“Summer in New York” clips continue emerge even with nightly lows below thirty degrees. “Escape From New York” comes complete with a brief Snake Plissken nod. (There is no reason why Roc Marciano shouldn’t join Big L and Jeru the Damaja in the ranks of go-to music to edit New York skate clips to. “Paid for the necklace and ate breakfast.”)

New footage from the Jersey City rink spot that looks old due to #VHS.

The Muska is back on the board. Well, sort of. Will club scenes in skate clips be a part of #trendwatch2013?

Quote of the Week: “White folks don’t know about Peanut Chews. That’s candy for old black men. My father and his father ate those. Y’all [white people] just have Hersey Kisses in your houses.” — Josh Velez

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: JAAAVVVAAALLLEEE MMMCCCGGGEEE!!! (And Kenneth Faried and Andre Miller and Corey Brewer.)

Pretty Sweet DVDs supposedly come out tomorrow. Anyone have info on which shops will have copies? (Miss you, Autumn.)

All My Whole Team Is Very Important, Straight Up

You know who’s kinda good at skateboarding? Lucas Puig. The illustrious Manolo mixtape series came through with a five-minute French Mariano tribute, accompanied by a left-field Big L remix. Even though we consistently state that French Mariano is superior to French Montana, a “Shot Caller” remix wouldn’t have been inappropriate.

New 30 seconds of footage from one of Queens’ finest, Luis Tolentino. (Related: 5050ing up a seven-stair rail is just normal now. Remember how that was a joke back when Yeah Right! came out?)

Apparently, people still skate spots that aren’t the new L.E.S. Park. Some bro cam footage from the BQE spot in Williamsburg.

The Philly-based Skate Jawn crew has a new issue of their ‘zine online, in addition to a new full-length video filmed mostly in the northeast.

Zabar’s caught onto our favorable trend forecast, which is pretty funny. How does this get turned into free or heavily discounted groceries?

With his third part this year (Note: It’s July), Mark Suciu is perhaps the first skateboarder to approach Wayne in 2006-2007 / Gucci in 2008-2009 levels of productivity and output. This one is filmed entirely at night and in downtown San Jose. We’ll happily curate an all-Midtown Manhattan edition in exchange for 15% of Habitat’s stock in the seemingly unshakeable brown pants industry.

Bad News! Don’t bother going up to 59th Street to skate any low ledges this summer. The entire monument has been fenced off.

More bad (maybe outdated) news! The eight-stair square rail at CBS got knobbed.

“Do you think it’s hard to get the rights for Biggie?” That seems to have been the case. Here’s Dennis Busenitz’s Roll Forever part remixed to the second or third best song off Ready to Die. Bumass WMG eased up, and finally liberated the audio. From the 2007 Real Remix Project DVD. Thank the Skate.ly library for the upload.

Can’t wait to see someone dressed like this at 12th & A. Whether or not he’ll also be mumbling “That’s the shit I don’t like” will be interesting to see.

Bronze / Flipmode’s 56k video: “Out later this week…maybe?”

P.S. Instagram-themed Rick Ross mixtape covers

We’re going to start a petition for a guest edit slot in the new Girl/Chocolate video. There’s a sneaking suspicion around the QS office that Ty Evans will forget to edit something to Future.

An Interview With Lurker Lou

Lurker Lou ruined skateboarding. When he snapped Matt Militano’s board during Slap’s One in a Million show (not even first try!), he singlehandedly took away all the fun there was to be had in riding a skateboard. We sat down with Lou to discuss why he is so hell-bent on destroying skateboarding, and why he hates America’s children.

+++++++

Where are you from, and how did you get into skating?

I’m from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The actual town is Dennisport, which is a small town, kinda white trash, dead all year, crazy in the summertime. My dad used to own a liquor store, and it had a drive-thru, and all these kids used to skate in there. My older brother had two friends who skated, and they sold me a used board for super cheap, so I started going out with them. I was turning 11, and they were 16.

How’d you end up moving to New York?

That was all Zered.

When did you originally meet him?

I met him when I was in 8th grade, he was the talk of Cape Cod. I never got out of my town to skate much, but as I got older, I’d go to other towns and link up with different dudes to skate. I met Zered at a contest. He won, and I think I got 3rd place. He lived two towns away, and after that, I just started going to his skatepark. He got on Zoo, and they got him an apartment here with Billy [Rohan] and Brian Brown. I’d just crash on an air bed, then Billy got kicked off and I took over his room. As soon as I moved here, we started filming Vicious Cycle.
