Happy New Year! 🍾 Here are the remaining bits of any year-end stuff you may have missed + all else from the fake week between Christmas and New Years. P.S. Found some boxes of the QS x Classic Grip Snackman grip in the warehouse and added ’em to the webstore.

“Going to the Noguchi Museum to sit in the garden before I try a trick.” If you wondered how Trung Nguyen got to be …well, Trung Nguyen, the answer is sitting in a zen garden before trying to get the clip — as evidenced by Skate Jawn‘s latest “$100 Chill” episode, which features the last filming day for Late Nite Stars’ O video.

“Xavier, what does ‘rap game Bob Burnquist’ mean?” “It means I’m the rap game Bob Burnquist.” Our friend Greg Navarro hung out with Xaviersobased for a wholesome day in the life video that gives insight into his music and origins. “Skater boys always got motion, man.”

The Skate Muzik podcast’s latest year-end episode covers the best #musicsupervision moments heard throughout 2023’s skate videos.

It’s Not Bro Time It’s Showtime

Everything is a YouTube link this week, so if you’re showing up here to get your read on, you’re better off taking your ass to the library ;)

Antics is a sick 18-minute New Jersey video by Hugh O’Hare, featuring a mix of homies from Branded and Travel Skateshops. Lots of time put in at the Newark Peach Ledges and Big Screen Plaza (still boarded off unchanged, btw.) Shout out to anyone grinding the edge of a glass pane. Shout out to the drop-in at Museum of Natural History (those security guards sure have had an interesting pandemic….) Shout out to Anthony Gordon’s part and front crook fakie.

It is *so hard* to show off your great skate hair in a winter edit. 80% of the footy in Josh Payner’s new winter video blog is in beanies, hoodies and gloves, so the skating itself is left to do the talking :) Also, these edits are awesome and inspiring. Here’s the first one.

At their best, skate videos use their subjects – namely, the skaters and the spots they skate – to blend the narratives of place and character into a cohesive whole. When this happens, you get a special product that recalls the intangible things we love about skating. John Petras‘ new Pittsburgh video, Celine, does just that.

In the height differential of a high-to-low ledge on a crusty Pittsburgh hill, I can sense the city-wide spot survey that led to this one’s constant reuse. In the high-contrast, black-and-orange-lit night footage at the Museum of Natural History, I can nearly see the frayed edges of a Toyota Yaris’ cloth seats and smell the stale spliff smoke from the half-day commute on I-80. The interim vignettes – gentle hugging of friends in quiet moments and the repeated handing off of a flower – drew me into the skaters’ world in unexpected ways. John Petras seems to have pulled off the difficult trick of imbuing Celine with a personal voice and a representative view of a city.
