Extended Winter Viewing: Stop Fakin’ 2 (in full)

With another log thrown on the “OMG is Mark Suciu #authentic?” fire today (and with no visible start of spring in sight), we would like to momentarily redirect your attention to another Philadelphia-area media institution. Stop Fakin’ 2 came out last summer, and you’ve likely seen some of its sections, as it was released via the “Few parts on YouTube, $10 for the DVD” business model favored by independent skate video directors today. It was the first independent project of 2012 to propel the “Love Park is back” narrative, while also serving as a reminder that Pulaski Park never left.

The entire video is now online in full. While we have fawned over Mark Suciu’s unprecedented footage-gathering capabilities, we have too easily forgotten that Stop Fakin’ 2 boasted one of three parts that Jersey Dave released in 2012. And in the realm of cameos: Sabotage may have had a switch 360 flipping Brian Wenning’s return to Love Park, but it sure as hell didn’t feature an appearance from the far more legendary Mr. Z.

R.I.P. Donald Byrd. At the very least, rap nerds can easily recognize Byrd’s music via the sample Premier chopped up for “N.Y. State of Mind” or the loop from Black Moon’s “Buck ‘Em Down.” He was also on Guru’s first Jazzmatazz compilation. Though not a skater favorite like Dave Brubeck, check out the 2002 Uprise Skateshop video, Suprise, which features two Donald Byrd songs (“Change” and “City Life”), not to mention Ryan Giese and Steve Nish appearances.

Black Dave made it. No, he really made it. B.D. will be opening up for Project Pat on Tuesday, February 26th at Santos Party House. Congratulations to B.D. on this monumental step in his career. And don’t worry, we’ll remind you about this sixty times between now and the end of the month.

The Bronze 56K DVD (which includes the other three Flipmode videos) is now available at DQM for those who are afraid the government watches their every move, and are hesitant to enter financial information online. The DVD is not the extensive box set we had envisioned for New York’s greatest skate video franchise, but even as a bare bones release, it is a must-own. Hopefully, sometime before the DVD completely dies off, we’ll have a 6-disc Criterion Collection release with director’s commentaries, “Where are they now?” featurettes for Why Man Why and Billy Lynch, Flipmode 3, I Woke Up Dead, and the believed-to-be-lost first video all included.

If you’re over 21, have an internet connection, and ride a skateboard, there’s a 98% you’ll see any Gino-related thing within 12 hours of it going online. If not, watch his DQM welcome video. Wow on the music supervision.

This “Lil’ Wayne is into skateboarding” thing doesn’t look like it’s ending anytime soon. Hey Wayne, unless you’re Mike Carroll filming for Fully Flared or something, 30 isn’t the best time to begin focussing on skateboarding. Stick to what you’re good at what you used to be good at. (Also: Will the grand opening of the skatepark Wayne is building in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward look anything like the “Pop That” video?)

Money on the Floor, Lighters on the Dresser

BLACK DONALD TRUMP will be performing at TBD Lounge tonight for a 40 Oz. Van party. Located at 15 Gold Street in the Financial District. It says 9 to 4 on the flyer, so who knows when Dave is actually supposed to go on. Flyer here.

Speaking of Dave (and rap): him, Taji, and Leo are all in some Russian rap video.

Two weeks late, but in case you missed it, Boil the Ocean offers some interesting commentary on the increasingly popular VHS revisionist trend (i.e. “Why can’t VHS be the new Super-8?”) apparent in many of today’s skate videos produced by people over 21. Some of these projects are cool, but this is the sort of thing that quickly becomes annoying once too many people jump on the bandwagon.

PFP2: See You Lazer is a local-based video featuring some 2nd Nature affiliates. Teaser here. It has a few painful-looking slams, so you may not want to watch if you’re about to leave the house to skate…

Here’s a Philly, D.C., and Baltimore based digi cam clip, which includes key scenes from Paid in Full, key tracks from Supreme Clientele, and key points of Roscoe “Imma Sip Moscato” Dash’s underrated influence in youth culture. They rock QS tees, so there’s another plus.

Solid interview with QS-bro-homie-4-life, Christian Banks. It’s not at all about skateboarding, but a good read for anyone that enjoys making music.

Spot Updates: 1) Not a popular spot, but the two up-and-over walls across from Columbus Circle that Shawn Powers skates at the start of this clip had their run ups re-paved. It’s a cool looking spot that mellows out late at night, so you should film some stuff on it. 2) Ziegfeld, still over-doing it, seven months after disaster struck. 3) This may be late, since the drunken Jane-to-Le Bain stroll is not as popular as it was this time last year, but the mega curb between the two (that Dan Zvereff somehow nollie back 180 heel nosegrinded in a line), is gone.
