April is one of those rare months where we’re throwing out two editions of Five Faves (Elijah Odom‘s ran earlier this month) on account of us missing March ;)

The past few Foundation videos have ignited a conversation (consensus?) about how to successfully refresh a legacy skate brand. Rather than lean into formulas that worked in years past, Splendor and Whippersnappers were both exciting projects with firm footing in the moment. In that crop of new faces, Ariana Spencer has stood out each time with contagiously fun footage — so we reached out for a list of inspirations. (Ariana has a full interview in the latest issue of Closer as well. Shout out to Jamie for the photo.)

We were out in Argentina last month, and were lucky enough to get shown around by Eze Martinez (Milton’s brother, yes.) He’s got an incredible section in the new Cons Argentina edit. There’s something extra fun in watching siblings who skate at absolute opposite ends of the skate spectrum excel in their respective corners at this high of a level. (No Milton footy in this video though.)

“Quit Sinnin” is a 15-minute New York video by Stephan Signh, with a bit of S.F. towards the end. Lots of spot inspo for warmer days :)

“It also is a return to form for Mike Carroll’s voiceovering, the years seeming to have slightly weathered his sound but his noun and verb and adjective selection still in top form.” Boil the Ocean weighs in on the Neils Bennett part. Favorite New York trick in that was the switch 5050 into the long steps on Riverside Drive.

The class of Greg Hunt’s work — and often personal relationships tied to it — is bound to productions whose influence is profoundly circular. Traversing the same streets countless times, over years and years, only to discover a hidden in-plain-sight new way of skating them is a well-understood skateboard phenomenon.

Diego Todd’s closing part in Hockey X was the result of combing his beachside hometown of Ventura, California in such a way.

Equipped with an attitude reminiscent of the goofball savant from a coming-of-age movie, Diego ducked down familiar streets for new takes and ticked off spots which had sat in the back of his mind since before he even had a driver’s license.

Our latest Deep Dive lifts the curtain on the local folklore and perilous spots tackled by Diego in the part that turned him pro.
