A Quartersnacks Christmas Or Something Like That

Santa Claus does exist — his name is actually Antonio.

Though a long way from the sprawling epic Christmas Clips of the past, today marks the first time since 2015 that we put up an edit for December 25. Though not the mood piece of night skating in hoodys that it once was, here are some of the easier-on-the-eyes clips from the past four or five months of bringing out the #realcamera. Half the footage is in shorts with leaves on the trees, so there was almost a debate about whether to call it a Christmas Clip at all, but who even has the time anymore ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Features Jesse Alba, Daniel Kim, Antonio Durao, Ben Blundell, Kyota Umeki, Myles Gable, Lurker Lou, Connor Champion, Sully Corimer, Dustin Henry, Etienne Gagne, Stephen Ostrowski, Keith Denley, Emilio Cuilan.

Skate Rave @ Vans Space 198

And on a day when the wind-chill brings the temperature down to 12 degrees, we bring you some… good news.

Space 198, the new free, INDOOR Vans park is opening on January 2nd at 198 Randolph Street in Brooklyn. Unlike the belated House of Vans, which was more of an event space inside of a skatepark (and brought out people’s inner savages anytime there was a mid-winter open day there), this park is a community-oriented space built for skateboarding.

It’s going to be open Thursday through Sundays — you just need to to sign up on the website beforehand. And it’s off the Jefferson L stop in Bushwick, making everyone’s life a bit easier than a 20-minute walk through the snow to Greenpoint that we used to do ;)

As they were putting the finishing touches on it, they gave a handful of crews the chance to check out the park last week, and here’s what we came back with. Be nice to Jersey Dave when you see him, because chances are, his phone has not stopped buzzing for the past two weeks.

Filmed by Will Rosenstock, Paul Young, Max Hull, Cristian Berrios & Kyota Umeki.

Cracks & Crevices

Nah Yeah is an all Long Island video by Duran Murphy, which is a twenty-minute deep dive into a scene that we too often only associate with the most obvious names + an annual trip to the Rosyln Banks/pool. It’s also crazy how much a dude switching between éS, Etnies, Vans & Osiris in a single part stands out in 2019. Also, shout out to Mook.

A bit north and to the left, we have Concerned Citizen, a rad 15-minute video filmed all around upstate New York: Rochester, Elmira, Binghamton, Ithaca, et al. Noticed a lot of Homegrown tees and boards, so assuming they have something to do with it :) We really need to make it back up there next summer. “What the FUCK does ‘really’ mean?”

Saved

2014. Photo by Emilio Cuilan.

Truly elated that we can begin a Monday Links round-up as we close out the summer without a link to a petition ♥ There’ll definitely be some formal news coverage of the day — which turned into a T.F. reunion rather than a rally — but caught this slideshow from Eric Cruz on IG earlier if you’re looking for pics. We should do a T.F. reunion the Saturday after every Labor Day every year, no? Like Bastille Day, but for Tompkins.

Tyshawn Jones is on i-D magazine’s cover this month, and they put their feature with him online.

The governor of New Jersey has been making the media rounds as of late. Fred Gall is the guest on honor on The Bunt‘s season finale.

Bert’s Vid — An Addendum to Quasi, Bronze, et al.

Between IG stories and “raw file” clips, there aren’t too many curated destinations for B-roll in 2019. An enterprising few will participate in skateboard fantasy sports and make remixes out of those loosies, but even those are running scarce these days. In this attention economy, asking somebody to watch the same footage twice is A LOT. (Jk, peep the remix that we posted last week.)

Bert’s Vid is a 35-minute bro cam video by Justin Helmkamp documenting much of the toil behind Quasi’s Mother and Bronze’s It’s Time videos (there are a couple No Idea bits in there too, too.) Yeah, there are a handful of shots of dudes following with an HXV, but there’s also footage of the warm-up tricks, the pre-sessions at Borough Hall, and the interludes spent around the corner at some shittier spot while you’re waiting for security to go back inside.

Features E.J. and pretty much everyone you’ve ever seen in Bronze or Quasi video.

And if you play a Bert’s Vid drinking game where you take a shot every time that Chachi gives you the middle finger, you’d probably be …mildly buzzed — though not totally tanked ;)
