Recession Special

grays

Even though everyone knows truth about hot dogs, we must bid a farewell to the 8th Street Gray’s Papaya. See, before the dollar slice boom of the late 2000s (pre-Mamani’s, Pre-Two Bros.), the familiar dilemma of skateboarding all day and trying to eat for under $4 was far more difficult. It was perfectly reasonable to skate crosstown from Tompkins to get the special at Gray’s. The kids have it way easier these days.

Less pertinent to skateboarding, but still a bummer: Miladys closed on Sunday :(

Jake Johnson pontificates on various issues over at the Cafe Creme blog.

If you’ve ever been to House of Vans, you know how absolutely insane this is.

Yet another recent Gino footage compilation. And here’s Boil the Ocean on “Gino’s most productive 14 months ever” and other developments from late 2013.

Polar has a Aaron Herrington mini clip on their Instagram.

The issue has been out for a few weeks, but Shawn Powers has a photo and blurb about him getting interrogated at Heathrow for six hours in the January Transworld. Also, the mostly in New York Dylan Reider interview photos are nuts. Kickflip up Fish Gap, front heel Bond Street, etc.

Kennedy Cantrell has a new part out for Iron Claw. Includes a Phil Rodriguez cameo.

The raw footage of the Dane Burman Philly 5050 is wild.

Some Austin transplants skate in Bushwick on what looks like Puerto Rican Day, among other things. You have to admire a line at the new worst spot in New York A.K.A. Kent Step that doesn’t utilize the steps, too.

A video interview with Danny Supa, one of history’s greatest backside flippers. He talks about Dead End, Tree Fort, etc.

Here’s a brief HD bro cam edit from Johnny Wilson and friends.

Some throwaway footage from the Spam video. (Full video here.)

“Everyone that’s attractive seems to have some dolt boyfriend, or is literally made out of garbage.”

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Kris Humphries had a bad week.

Quote of the Week
Beer Drinker #1: “What’s up with these Coors Lights?”
Beer Drinker #2: “The ones on the right I just put in, the ones on the left are cold.”
Beer Drinker #1: “You think I don’t know how to look at the blue strip, motherfucker?”

It’s supposed to go all the way up to 51 degrees today! Have a good one.

Comfort Station

Who wins the battle of most insane thing accomplished on a skateboard for the past week — Jake Johnson (above) or Dane Burman for 5050ing the Philadelphia Municipal Services rail? (As a result of those two, one of the crazier bluntslides in recent history may have unfortunately been overshadowed.)

Though it doesn’t have the particular Montreal trick in question, the new GX1000 montage has a good bit of Jake Johnson footage from Montreal.

Copenhagen seems like a good time.

Small Wheels has a short, entirely New York-set welcome video for Aaron Herrington. (Still tough to spell that with an “E” instead of an “A” given memories of a guy who spells his name with the latter.) Also, while (somewhat) on the topic of Polar, their section in Grey Area is nostalgic in a EE3 sort of way and generally awesome.

On Golden Pond 2 is a 20-minute homie video, mostly filmed in New York.

With winter midtown season fast approaching, here’s a chill black and white gallery of the DQM team on a high ISO session.

Some footage of dudes skating a bank spot that people began venturing out to in 2011, but in 1993 though

How long until someone 5050s this new traffic sculpture in Park Slope?

Watermelon Alex and Belief Skate Shop are hosting a best trick contest at the Astoria Park next Saturday, November 2nd.

Speaking of Belief, their 2013 video, Ever Upward, is on Vimeo in its entirety.

The good news: Someone up there likes skateboarding, because the Chase two up, five down has been remodeled into exactly what it once was. The bad news: The building has been sold to a Chinese company, with “plans to expand and enhance the retail space at the base of the building,” so it may soon become a bust.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Tyler Hansbrough was about to bring Psycho T out, until he realized who was behind him

Quote of the Week: “Maroon 5 has a hood pass.” — Ty Lyons

Slow news week. You’ve seen all this stuff before. OMG :(

Bronze ‘Solo Jazz’ is Now Online

bronze solo jazz

Monday links are getting postponed until tomorrow because the Bronze video is online and it deserves its own post.

The most beloved New York City video franchise is back with its latest installment. Solo Jazz features many new names making their first-time, full-length appearance in a Bronze production: Dick Rizzo, Josh Wilson, Aaron Herrington and Jason Carroll. Though they may dilute the collective’s deep Queens origins, their skateboard abilities only add to the excellence of this six (arguably eight) film franchise. Mainstays like Shawn Powers, Kevin Tierney, Derick Zeimkiewicz, Joseph Delgado, and Billy McFeely came through with wonderful sections, despite prior commitments that range from sponsorships to Polish espionage. Fan favorite, Phil Rodriguez, was sorely missed due to injury, and longtime followers of the franchise were surely shocked to learn that Solo Jazz has the unfortunate distinction of being the first Bronze video where Xavier Veal does not show up and at least 5050 some large handrail :(

Buy some Bronze tees and a hard copy of the video to support funding for the upcoming Billy Lynch documentary.

P.S. Johnny Wilson’s new project, Beef Patty, premiered the other night and it was really, really good. Loose Trucks Max has the ender. Hopefully, it makes its way online soon.

P.P.S. Colin Read’s new video, Tengu, premieres at the Sunshine Theater (Forsyth and Houston, where the Pretty Sweet premiere was) on Thursday, August 29th. Doors open at 8:30. Flyer here. So, there’s the potential of there being three great New York-based projects available in a week’s span. Looks like a solid end of the summer.

“But what I can’t understand is why people in a hot-ass desert town like Tucson, Arizona, wouldn’t want a day off work. It’s not like you have to do something black on that day. You know, you don’t have to read Ebony magazine. You don’t have to watch Soul Train. All you have to do is not work.”

Might want to read this instead of lurking the Slap board today: Playboy’s full January 1965 interview with Martin Luther King Jr., which happens to be the longest and most in-depth interview he has ever granted any publication.

Rest in Peace Lewis Marnell. Manolo already came through with a great five-minute tribute edit of Lewis’ footage.

“I’d rather watch Busenitz ________.” Today, that blank is filled with “cruise around mostly low-impact European spots and drive home the fact that America sucks for skateboarding.” Those spots look incredible.

Skateboarding Bloopers: Handrail Edition

It only took an hour after Dece Vid‘s release for somebody to rip Yaje’s standalone part to YouTube. Let’s all hope this isn’t Yaje’s final part. (Fun Fact: Most of the footage in that part is ~two-years-old.)

New Iron Claw iPhone montage featuring crowd favorite, Phil Rodriguez.

Jordan Trahan, Jimmy McDonald and Rob Gonyon (another crowd favorite) rip around Tribeca and the West Village in the latest Berrics “Off the Grid” segment.

Slam City Skates has a quick interview up with Lev Tanju, the architect behind Palace Skateboards, about the company’s future, sense of humor and Southbank.

Brooklyn Banks contest results from April 4, 1998.

ICYMI: Aaron Herrington is really good at skateboarding.
QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Ish Smith JUMPS OVER John Wall, turns around, and blocks his shot. Also, his name is Ish.

Time to watch basketball. Enjoy this cold-ass week.

It’s a party, it’s a party, it’s a party…

Willing to bet that she’s rolling all those beers over to Grove Street.

Ragers, Inc. is a Flip Cam video from the homies out in Vancouver. It has footage of our favorite Canadian skateboarder, Torey Goodall, and undoubtedly the best soundtrack to a skate video in 2011. Euro section gets the best song (at 3:16.) It’d be perfectly fine if a major pro skateboarder recycled this song for a blockbuster skate video part. (Mildly related: We still got that Quartersnacks Tiesto edit on ice for 2011.)

Guy Mariano talks about Mouse. Some of this has been touched upon in the commentary on the Mouse DVD, but he explains why the switch front shove crook down the handrail was relegated to the credits.

Taji interviewed Grandpa about Autumn’s ten-year-long history. Related: An interview with Dave Mims, Autumn’s owner. Here’s to another ten.

To compliment the Billy Lynch part included in last week’s Flipmode 3 anniversary post, here is his part in the Long Island based $20 Off No Tax video, which came out a few months after Flipmode 3 in 2006. Click here for the full video.

This Skate & Annoy headline — “Dipshit Accidentally Kills Pedestrian, Sets Skateboarding Back 50 Years” — is reminiscent of that classic skit from The Chris Rock Show, where he chronicles all the events that have set black people back and ahead. Perhaps this winter, when there is less stuff to update with, Quartersnacks will chronicle all the ways that skateboarders have been set back and ahead throughout history. “AND THEN CAME THE SOURCE AWARDS…”

Someone does a sick front board off the rounded marble ledge at Exchange Place in this New York to San Francisco clip. First song is one of those few that should be off limits for recycling though.

Aaron Herrington (whose name keeps reading as Al Harrington…remember that dude?) skates a lot of quintessential Quartersnacks SoHo spots in his Boneyard part. Heavy alternation between SF and New York spots seems to be big in 2011 (Dela, Westgate, etc.)

Two weeks late, but Slappy Cove is a wrap.

Probably even more late, but the downhill bump-to-bump thing in Maspeth is temporarily blocked off due to construction. Save yourself the trip, since it’s one of those spots you need a car for.

Quote of the Week:
Sweet Waste: “What are you about to do?”
Jack Sabback: “I know this 19-year-old Hare Krishna girl that’s throwing a rooftop party.”
