Up-Rails

Spots: Midtown Manhattan — Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen & Midtown West

Update: The main rail has been knobbed, but the one after it is still free. They’re both the same thing, so you can still skate here.

Spot: Up-Rails is far and away the most dangerous spot in the city. Within the first week of its discovery back in 2003, it put three people out of commission. Be careful of what you try here, because there are far too many ways to wipe out on it.

There are three rails here — all exactly the same, minus the way you could approach them from. Heading south, there are two rails spaced apart about thirty feet from each other, with another rail going downwards another fifty feet down the strip. They start from the ground and gradually ascend to be about three-feet high. They are all around six inches in width, and approachable from either side. You could also skate the flat part if you have the pop for it. All the ground here is smooth asphalt although you can occasionally run into some pebbles here and there.

Bust — ♦ / Rare: You should not get kicked out of here.

Location: The Westside Highway / 12th Avenue and 36th Street, at the NY Waterway Ferry Terminal (there are no cross streets back here, so 36th Street is an estimate.) Take the A, C or E train to 34th Street–Penn Station. Skate west on 34th Street until you hit the Westside Highway. Make a right, and skate up the parallel bike path for approximately two or three blocks. You should see the rails right before the Manhattan car impound.
