Parisian Notes on Cons & Ben Chadourne’s Purple Video

Words & Photos by Zach Baker

It is wild to me that a person could ever get to a point in their given field where they could even consider the idea of making something perfect. In skating, I’m reluctant to say that it is even possible, given the subjectivity that is part and parcel of anything creative. Be it the way a person holds their arms, or the viewer’s disapproval of whatever “bullshit fuckin’ trap song!” was chosen — in 2018, considering the our varied and fickle tastes, no video is going to make everyone happy. I doubt that the people involved in the making of Purple had any delusions in this regard.

Quartersnacks For Nike SB III

“Damn, he no complied 6ix9ine.” Photo by Colin Sussingham.

Quartersnacks is proud to present its third collaboration with Nike SB, which will be available at skate shops tomorrow, April 14. It will also be available on the QS webstore at 10 A.M. E.S.T. tomorrow. The capsule includes two colorways of a leather SB Blazer XT, a white mesh top, and a ringer tee. A small preview of the capsule and a list of retailers can be found here.

We were inspired by skateboarding’s recent flirtations with color, echoing back to its luminous roots rather than the brown pants era synonymous with this website’s early days. However, the sun did not shine down hard on us as we went out there during the first third of 2018. This clip was filmed in the second and third overtime of winter 2018, with a few free 72-hour trials of spring sprinkled between.

So far, 2018 has been about pushing around with chapped lips, dodging wind, and hoping to stumble on or rediscover something to instill that hope for the warmer days that are out there. Somewhere.

Features Andrew Wilson, Max Palmer, Zach Baker, Keith Denley, John Choi, Josh Wilson, and Antonio Durao.

Filmed and Edited by Emilio Cuilan of Hardbody Entertainment.

The Shape of Tompkins

This is so cute. Shout out to any pro that’s ever sent a handwritten letter.

Rockstar pull up no guitar.

Contagiously good-vibed human and skater, Jawn Gardner, has a new part over on Thrasher, in addition to a part in the newly uploaded Creature video at the 18:10 mark.

Gino Iannucci asks “Who’s going around skating in a $400 sweater?” in his Monster Children feature about restarting Poets as a brand. I gotta introduce him to Troy, though I think his shit is a good bit over $400 ;)

Real re-issued some old Huf boards and has a bit of a feature on him over on their site + clean versions of all his parts. Slam City Skates also interviewed him about Ari Marcopolis’ iconic Metropolitan ad photography. (We talked to Huf about some of his favorite snaps back in 2015 in the event you need even more Huf content hehe.)

“I kind of wonder how I had so much nerve to do some of those graphics.” This is nine months old, but shout to Palomino for just linking it — an hour-long interview with Mark McKee that gives insight into the wild west era of skateboard graphics.

Genny hits Club Liv and a bunch of triangle manny pads in his latest iPhone edit.

Only like 10 people are gonna know what this means, but this feels like a 2018 SuchAGood clip.

Solo interviewed perennial #QSTOP10 fave and Milano Centrale MVP, Ruben Spelta on the occasion of their “THREEE” videos. Thanks for the shout out bro ♥

Huck has posted some iffy articles about skateboarding in the past, but this one about a Bristol D.I.Y. spot and the general rise of skater-made spaces is an a-ok quick read.

Interesting time capsule: a “lost” Alex Olson interview from 2012.

Boil the Ocean on “a mile-long backside tailslide and, perhaps in tribute to Dan Pageau’s freshly funded legacy, a switchstance trip down the fearsome El Toro.”

A lot of smiles in this jazzy nu-age Miami edit from the Andrew Skateshop crew.

Spot Updates1) The Banks are *officially* a no-go again. 2) Not sure how recent this is, but to nobody’s surprise, BAM 3 got knobbed.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Lebron James what the fuck omg.

Quote of the Week: “Remember when you showed up to Johnny Wilson’s house and forced him to watch a Pat Laflamme part?” — Zach Baker to ET

Rest in peace Bankroll Fresh, get well soon Ricky Ross, everybody else please take good care of yourselves, and skateboard and laugh with your friends as much as you possibly can yaknow ♥

“I remember when dinner depended on my fishing rod” is one of the greatest things a rapper has ever said.

Happy birthday Zach Baker ♥, breaker of 4 boards in 40 minutes.

R.I.P. (?) Le Dome. Based on documentation available on this side of the Atlantic, it’s tough to tell whether the plaza is getting demolished in full, or they’re just resurfacing it with Skatelite. (Yeah, it’s not local news, but recent local skate spot news stops around, um, that wallride / drug-use area outside of Newark Penn Station being skate-blocked / crack-blocked.) In presumed memoriam, here is an old #PFW QS compilation of all Flo Marfaing’s Le Dome hubba tricks, an old post about the greatest line ever done there, an old post about the only 5050 kickflip that ever mattered, and a clip of The Shady One going all-in #respect on a 5050 after a plane claim.

“Kevin Tierney wouldn’t shut up about how he was going to switch laser flip the Le Dome double set even though it had already been done 15 years ago.” Solo has an appropriate article about the Bronze crew’s most recent trip to Paris.

Matt Velez uploaded Calzone is full, and John Valenti uploaded N.Y. Archive in full.

What the fuck: “You have to take a blood and piss test to skate [the indoor park] so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that most locals skip that option.” Medium skate mag has a short feature about how people manage to skate in Russia during the winter.

“This is the best time to skate Rick Owens.” There’s a fun new Bluecouch edit up.

The summer 2012 edition of Elkin’s raw files is now live, featuring a bunch of footage that would end up in Leo’s 2013 Q.S.S.O.T.Y-earning Brodies part.

Village Physic interviewed Reda about the rules of being a skate photographer in the social media age. (Unsolicited link to Reda’s Bobshirt interview because it’s the best.)

There have been a few of these over the past couple years, but Vice has a feature about skateboards’ three-decade avoidance of inflation. I have a feeling that if we keep writing these things it’s gonna be some “be careful what you wish for”-shit and we’re going to walk into a shop and boom, $85 for a deck with grip. Thanks everyone!!!

There’s a Brujas x Gang Corp event at the Spin Club on 23rd Street tonight, 8-midnight + there’s a Deckaid show at NJ Skateshop in Hoboken on Saturday, from 7-10 P.M.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Everything fun in the NBA last week mostly happened off the court, so let’s get weird and give play of the week to the most complicated way of preventing a ball from going out of bounds ever.

Fashionable Gentleman: “A week.”

Vert God’s Stop Fakin’ 3 part drops on QS tomorrow

Birdgang 3 is now online *airhorn*

The Bloby videos are still the QS office’s favorite thing going. “Zdroopy,” their new one, is magic. Vince’s front nose 270 out is pure beauty, Karl Salah’s lines are always poetry, and DREWWWWWWW, Franco + Daniel Kim have cameos. No Hjalte tho :(

And the Pop boys also came through with a rad Paris edit that a) avoids a lot of the city’s most oft-skated spots, and b) oddly features a ton of underground footy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Jenkem has a great interview with Tyshawn Jones.

…and Skateboard Story has an interview with Calzone maker, Matt Velez.

This is a mega Boil the Ocean post: reflecting on 28 years of Thrasher S.O.T.Y winners…in the bizarro world, where Penny won in ’95, and Tiago won in ’17, etc.

Good bit of new Caddo footage in the friends section of Valenti’s N.Y. Archive project.

So this is the spot Rick Howard would’ve found if he kept skating around the forest after he bumped his head in Mouse.

Our dear friends at Seasons dropped new video over the weekend. That Empire State Plaza spot is lowkey one of the best spots on the east coast now that it’s a go.

I saw a video labeled “Patrik Wallner” and “The Lost Continent,” and my first thought was “damn, these dudes deadass went to Antarctica on a skate trip didn’t they.” They didn’t, but I did have to Google where on the planet they actually went was.

King puts something we’ve all done into writing: Musing on Gino’s Yeah Right! part.

One day Rihanna is throwing you hearteyes across the aisle at #NYFW, the next you’re a crumpled Thrasher tee under a pile of new soccer jerseys. It’s a filthy, fickle business, guys. I don’t believe in nothing no more, I’m going to law school!

Franco???

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Hold up wait a minute

Quote of the Week
Inquisitive Gentleman: “Did anyone pull last night?”
Zach Baker: “No, there were too many beautiful boy friends in there.” #LMB
