First* Post of 2017

Technically it’s the *second* post of the year after the online DANY video premiere (YouTube link here btw), but let’s not screw tradition up yaknow :)

As always, let’s get anything pertinent to the last year out of the way: 1) Tiago, Hjalte and Jerry Hsu round out the top three of Boil the Ocean’s ten best of 2016 countdown. 2) Better Skate Than Never is always good for a round-up of largely independent web clips that stood out. Their top 30 of 2016 is a nice reminder to rewatch Hjalte’s Jonas Skrøder part. 3) Ripped Laces runs down the best skate shoes of last year.

Village Psychic put together a sick new remix video of Mark Humienik, avid practitioner of the backside shove-it out, and one of the few remaining devotees to the early-2000s Staten Island ledge relic known as the ABC Ledges #wenning #durante #charlesives

Conor, Jesse and Loose Trucks Max all heavy in Genesis Evans’ new iPhone clip.

36 Stair Ollie” is the new ~moody~ clip from the Marbio Worldwide crew out in L.I.

The Bunt is really coming through with the heavy-hitters this year. Episode two of the new season is with new Anti-Hero rider, Brian Anderson, who has apparently been skating Anti-Hero boards with stickers over the graphic since the Yeah Right! days.

Brunch is a fun new full-length out of Montreal (pretty sure…) with a good bit of New York footage. A lot of familiar faces and an E.T. cameo :)

Diamond Days, now ten away from a hundred.

Hardies threw an unannounced best trick contest at the L.E.S. Park a few weeks ago.

Joe Cups has hard copies of Lurkers 3 up for preorder + some other merch.

Steve Mastorelli’s new video, The Meadowlands, is premiering at the SVA theater on 23rd Street between 8th and 9th at 9 P.M. on Saturday. You can find the flyer here.

ICYMI, there’s nothing to skate at Astor again. This headline has some nerve

One thing that moves lightyears quicker than the Thrasher homepage is the Live Mixtapes homepage. For that reason, RapZips.tumblr.com has been a massive help in catching up on music that might’ve slipped through the cracks last year.

Uncle Murda’s “2016 Rap Up” is wwwaaayyy sketchier than last year’s.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: This Kris Dunn sequence is fucked, but also the Blazers are 30th in the league in defense (don’t worry, the Knicks are 23rd.)

Quote of the Week
Yaje: “In Europe, you can get beer anywhere, even at the vending machine.”
Jason Byoun: “Word. That’s like the Staten Island Ferry.”

Let Roy help you get through this next year…or four ;) ♥

Has the site fallen off a bit as of late? Sure. Was Quartersnacks Vogue week (see #19) just a really high concept editorial week where we barely post anything on the said theme because we’re under-qualified to report on it? Definite possibility. Are we looking towards a bright future of reportage on New York skateboard minutiae, silly remix videos, and mediocre skate clips? Absolutely!

Jasper Dohrs’ Thirty Purse part is full of quick-footed curbery, wallrides on chain links, ambitious heaves over the First Avenue bike lane, and is entirely filmed in New York.

End of an era, although it probably needed an update unless you’re a nostalgia over function type of guy ;) Riverside Skatepark is getting a cement re-design, which includes a bowl and halfpipe. And wait, is that a…regular, straight ledge?!

Gucci Mane for Supreme.

Genesis made made a July 4th clip to the Song of the Summer, circa 2000.

Pep Kim made a quick mini doc on Aaron Herrington’s rise to sketchy 5050s on sketchier handrail fame. The 5050 on the Riverside Drive & 111th rail is still ♥

Diamond Days #89. Keith is proud of this one, but his QS part is still R.I.P.

Always nice to see Newark footage. “Cityscapes” via Municipal Skateboards.

Oh you thought this early-2000s nostalgia shit was a game? The D3 is coming back.

Village Psychic runs down a history of strange skater + sponsor pairings. Weird, because I have Greg Lutzka’s one and only Krooked pro model hanging on the wall above my computer…

Carroll and Chico at the L.E.S. Park on the week of It Was Written‘s 20th bday.

Gotta appreciate people’s optimism when embarking on the uphill journey of rebooting a once beloved but ultimately short lived skateboard company. Here’s an interview about the Menace reboot.

Quick B-sides clip via Russian Bob.

Hey, I’m here for the half cab flips and Alicia Keys samples.

QS Sports Desk: Signing Joakim Noah for four years was, um, an interesting decision, but gotta admit that this interview rewired some of the headscratching, although it probably won’t mean much once November rolls around, and who’s really stupid enough to care about the Knicks anyway I dunno I’m out man.

Quote of the Week: “It’s like The Berrics, but for art.” — E.J.

Have a good week everyone! :)

Go Skateboard With Your Friends

Stingwater.

The most unexpected event of 2016 has got to be Fat Joe and Remy Ma legit making a hit twelve years after “Lean Back.” (I still got “Inside the Mattress” on though.) And now, the pressing question of which summer clip will be the first to go…”all the way up” is over ;) The promo for the new HYD video has a bunch of gems in it, including the second most unexpected event of 2016: someone filming a line at the ABC ledges.

Some of this footage appeared in Deathbowl to Downtown and Huf’s Epicly Later’d, but it is the best old footage to resurface probably since “Apple Juice” went online. Huf, Keenan, Liversedge, Bici, etc. circa 1991. Shout out to skate spots.

TWS posted TJ’s full AM spotlight interview and photos.

“My favorite skater is Louie Lopez, and my second favorite skater is Louie Lopez when he gets older.” (Only online for 48 hours btw.)

Blueprint Alumni Update: Some chill Danny Brady footage in the new Slam City Skates clip, and Nick Jensen has a new part to some Red and Meth.

Ripped Laces been posting a good bit of cool shit lately — a requiem for Reekbok’s DGK Workout Lo (which 80% of the people involved with this website were skating in 2005 because that store Clientele [R.I.P.] had pairs for $30) and Kerry Getz on life after pro skateboarding at a #legacyskateshoebrand.

Remember that chill D.I.Y. spot south of Alligator Ledge that was around for like two weekends? Max Hull posted some highlights with the BSA squad.

Sidewalk interviewed Aaron Herrington re: everything.

Zered talks talks about what “vicious cycle” actually meant and photography.

Is Reggaeton the new #skatevideohouse? Diamond Days #88.

Stöösy has a new clip of Jesse Alba skating around Brooklyn.

We were just at the Christiana bowl a week-and-a-half ago. Someone said “that’s where Tom Penny sleeps” re: a sleeping bag in this small zone above the bowl. New [indoor skatepark] Penny footage.

Support Humble Skateboards.

I have no clue what the new Boil the Ocean post is talking about.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Given that Game 4 was like the only “fun” one to watch, it’d be dope if this went seven, but looks doubtful.

Still most played jam of 2k16. Yo can someone please do a full Future + Nard & B mix? Respect to Young Metro but its the most under-appreciated rapper+producer combo.

Skate the Ledges

love

Brian Panebianco’s Instagram has been the go-to for all end of Love coverage. Respect to anyone who made it down there to skate in single-degree temperatures.

Damn.

You likely caught it already, but Yaje went on a tear for his welcome part to the resuscitated AWS. (Yes, he’s still alive.) Malfa also posted all the photos from Yaje’s interview in this month’s TWS, although you’ll have to grab the issue for the text.

Pretty much all Morningside Heights + Harlem spots in this Mikey Perdomo remix part by Bluecouch NY, which is refreshing to see. Surprised more people don’t try barging a lot of the stuff on the Columbia campus beyond the bank-to-ledge. Ollie over the wall at Morningside School was a pretty wild and unexpected one too ;)

Flo is skating the Le Dome Hubba again. [Previously]

Said it before, but Tom Knox’s Vase section is probably the most re-watched video part around here since Reider’s Gravis comeback. For those just getting up to speed, Sidewalk gave a complete rundown of his video part history. (A notable early-30s nosegrind technician recently told me he preferred the 11th Hour part, so…) Thrasher also just went live with all his Vase extras and raw files. We’d remix it, but nothing on the new Boosie goes well with British skateboarding.

Bobshirt has a fifteen-minute video interview with Long Island legend and owner-of-a-famous-nose, Frank Gerwer. They talk about board graphics, Wallenburg, first trips to the Banks, etc. FYI: The Number Nine part he mentions can be found here. It has a good bit of cool early-90s midtown footage.

Raw footage reel via Matt Velez, Diamond Days #86 via Rob Harris (where’s the party for #100?), and another extended All City Showdown edit via Tony Choy-Sutton.

Village Psychic with a timely article on maintaining private skateparks on the east coast during the winter. I still never forgave whoever stole the plastic benches from the Fairway on 125th Street to put in that Red Bull park on N. 11th circa 2004.

Boil the Ocean re: skating’s willingness to re-embrace its wandering prodigals.

Oh no, is jump cut editing a la The Reason coming back? :/

Another preview of the Big Brother book. Labor had copies as of a few days ago. Not sure if they still do.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Russell Westbrook’s All-Star Game entrance. Also, to anyone talking about Carmelo trade rumors — stop. Just stop.

Quote of the Week: “Bernie Sanders is gonna win off memes.” — Martin Davis

Thanks to everyone who came out on Saturday.

Photo via The Green Diamond, which apparently still gets updated? Who knew.

The T.F. at 1: Ten Years of Quartersnacks book is now available from Supreme and Labor for $30 — or from the Powerhouse webstore direct. Other shops will have it Tuesday, December 8. Internationally soon. Also, we’re having a launch event at the Powerhouse Arena in Dumbo this Friday, December 4, from 7 to 9 P.M. Free booze, etc. 37 Main Street. F train to York Street. Come through ;)

Vincent’s Free remix is incredible.

This dude 5050ed around the entire hundred and eighty degree curve at the Marcus Garvery flatrails, or as Slicky Boy once called it, “Marvis Gardens” :)

Thrasher posted the full text and all the photos from T.J’s interview last month.

Rad new part from Eggs legend, Gavin Nolan. Yes, there’s Houston construction in it.

New Johnny Wilson HD video blog with a bunch of “Rack” extras.

New not Johnny Wilson HD video blog with a bunch of extras from pretty much the same people. Dude Owl’s Head is coming back in a big way! #trendwatch2015 2016.

New Cell Jawn clip also featuring pretty much the same people, plus the 2nd best post-most-recent-incarceration Gucci Mane song after “Orange.”

Easy to forget that this era even happened — Bobby Puleo talks about his tenure over at Enjoi in part two of the “15 Years of Enjoi” series. Check after the 5 minute mark.

Boil the Ocean on how Josh Kasper’s willingness to embrace pro wrestling antics some twenty years ago is now being co-opted by some of skateboarding’s most beloved figureheads for headline-grabbing purposes.

Alex Olson, Jesse Alba and Chris Millic at L.E.S, down the block from Zhu’s.

Having a brand is the new being in a band. Challex Olson from Bianca Chandon / Call Me 917 has a new video interview over at VHS Mag.

New bro cam clip from the bro Gabe Tennen, who continues to maintain his longstanding allegiance to that awful Crowd Heights skatepark at Brower Park :)

Serious hangtime at 181. Also, the part of it under the overpass looks like a full crazy Euro spot if you take all the color out of the video.

I think 2015 might hold the new record for the number of skate premieres hosted by Sunshine. Transplants, the new one from Zach Moore, premieres on Thursday, December 10th, at 9 P.M. Flyer here. Teaser here.

The fat silver double rails at Grand Central / the spot formerly known as Burritoville have been turned into a four-flat-four-flat-four triple set that maybe Chris Pfanner could ollie once the barricades come down.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week:in tweet form.

Quote of the Week: “You have good credit man. Want a free iPad?” — AT&T Employee

Almost done with 2015 :/ Year-end countdown, etc. begins this week xoxo.
