Getting Them Royalties Dodging Them Bumblebees

It’s heartwarming to see world renown design principles from 12th & A make their way to skateable spaces all the way across the Atlantic.

“Their video Grains, filmed across the soybean belt of Illinois, Missouri, Indiana and Ohio, veers far off interstate arteries and urban sprawls to extract tricks from crumbling loading docks in Joliet, dilapidated stadiums in Gary, polished-stone plaza ledges in downtown Peoria.” As most skate content has drifted towards Instagram and nothing has much staying power, the idea of a “video review” has sadly become a relic of skate publications past. That’s a bit sad, considering a resounding, well-written recommendation of a not-so-obvious video (or something you simply neglected to click on) still means a lot. I bought Grains after reading Boil the Ocean’s new review of it, and can’t say I would’ve been compelled to do the same if I saw a part of it on Thrasher or YouTube with a Big Cartel link under it ♥

“The most dominant example of genre loyalty is DGK’s whopping 92% use of hip hop.” Someone culled Skatevideosite’s entire database of soundtracks and put together an infographic-based portrait of #musicsupervision in skate videos over the past four decades — and somehow, despite the fact it has been a recurring joke on here for ~10 years — Big L isn’t the most oft-used rap artist.

The water sports section from Spirit Quest, where they put a condom on a VX, is now online ;) …as is Ben Gore’s hill-heavy Static IV part.

Theories has an abridged history of any and all spot selection trends to take course over the history of skateboarding, though they left out some dismal low-points of recent spots on this side of the planet.

This feels like a clip that would’ve been on 48 Blocks ten years ago. In a good way.

Real is working on a documentary on Chicago’s Uprise Skateshop, and presumably ignoring a mountain of pitch emails from Paulgar about doing one on Autumn.

A true testament to the abysmal state of skateboard Twitter is the fact that after ~eight years of being on there, the Quartersnacks account’s most popular post is of a scooter kid focusing a skateboard. Maybe they really are taking over!

Keeping along with last week’s 76ers theme…

Been a slow start to the year out there. Pretty excited for this heatwave though.

Steve Mastorelli (the guy who made The Meadowlands last year) has a sick new edit up, which screened before the video at the NJ Skateshop Stop Fakin’ 3 premiere. Features a bunch of familiar north Jersey faces and spots.

One of the standout ex-pat / visitor in New York vids in recent memory — “Dice of Life: Twenty Eighteen.” Huge array of spots (shout out to everyone venturing out to the still-good spots that weathered locals otherwise gave up on), really sick skating (the line at the Escape From New York cathedral on Amsterdam is fucked + the varial heel at Southbridge Towers is sick too), and one of the best No Limit songs to start it off, though they only used the worst verse on it :)

Coda has new montage for 2018, with some wild moves, especially in the first part, which seemed like it was about to be filmed exclusively under the J train.

Kinda an interview with Aidan Mackey + photos from the roof of the former QS office.

R.B. Umali mashed up a bunch of his old footage to create a “15 Years of New York skateboarding” montage that covers 1995 to 2010, with the first ever (?) regular-motion footage of the best kickflip ever done.

#comebackwatch2018: 1) Never been the biggest fan, but the DC Lynx is *officially* coming back into their line. 2) Gino Iannucci’s onetime Long Island Skateshop, Poet’s, is being relaunched as a standalone brand. 3) The sneaker nerds were already up on this, but Nike’s Grandstand 2, which you might remember Reese Forbes wearing in his first-ever SB ad, is set to re-release sometime soon. (It’s not an SB model though.)

“I never thought I’d send DVDs to Iraq.” Solo has an an interview with Nick from The Palomino, the internet’s best skate shop ♥ You can find QS on there too obvs ;)

An ocean away and old, but new, but a #spotcheck nonetheless.

Ten years since Static 3 with Soy Panday and Danny Renaud.

“The backside 360 with that gentle and (sarcastically?) smug roll away off the ledge is the first trick I think of when I think of Bobby Puleo in Static II.” And on that same note…“musing on” Puleo’s part in the second Static video.

Walker Ryan has low-key (mid-key?) spent the past few years doing some of the best tricks on the staple New York spots. Old Friends put together this five-minute A.B.D. edit of all his city footage. Respect to filming the World Trade out ledge from the Burger King window, and to the fact that the security guard standing at the bottom of the bank is basically a part of the Roosevelt Island spot, no matter the clip.

Drew Connors dropped a promo for Bailar II, featuring Shredmaster Keith advocating for the resurgence of the Polish Park ledges on McGuiness — A.K.A. Derick Ziemkiewicz Park. You can watch the first Bailar video here.

Genny uploaded his first iPhone video of the spring to a David Banner classic.

Jonathan Rentschler has a sick-looking new 176-page book coming out that documents the final three years of Love Park.
