New Juicy Elbows winter montage with some #relaxing #musicsupervision. (McCarren Skatepark: So shitty, it’s a #street spot.) The varial flip, [almost] varial heel line is sick.

Fascinated by this odd, new sub-genre of New York skateboard videos where it’s clear that everyone involved has a job (i.e. living above dollar dumpling -class.)

New York’s premier January and February getaway is still going strong. Billy Rohan, Watermelon Alex, and others in Acapulco Gold’s Puerto Rican excursion.

Not sure why anyone would call a skate video Smegma (2014 skate video title sexualization gone awry?), but it’s a solid half-New York / Half-Virginia production. Lots of impressive maneuvers, including a wild transfer trick on the Lincoln Center Movado wallride, Leo Heinert 5050ing through the knobs in the Union Square rail, and a thoroughly great ender part from Clement Oladipo.

Whatever happened to the shifty flip?

Credit to Mostly Skateboarding for shining a light back on this J.J. Rousseau Puzzle Video mag part from 2002. Dude always flew a bit under the radar between J.B’s peak and Lucas’ little kid phase. That part was way ahead of its time. And nothing quite says early-2000s Euro video like a bangers section that degenerates into drum and bass ;)

There’s officially a Quartersnacks-themed vanity plate on the streets of Los Angeles. We got Virginia down (#QSisforlovers), now we need the other 49 states. Maybe not Florida though…

Dime rounded up a minute of the best flatground tricks ever done in the Dime Flatground Open: Masters Series, though oddly no Kalis or J.B. to be found. The tricks over the Love can and Newport fakie flip go without saying, but always been a fan of Kalis’ turnaround then 360 flip in Stevie’s Reason part (3:18).

You’re going to be seeing a lot of interviews with Bill Strobeck about “cherry” these next few months: Transworld has one and Live Skateboard Media has another one. (ICYMI: Here’s the one we did, though it came out before the video and had to avoid talking about certain things in detail, given our #spoileralert-sensitive culture.) There’s also some speculation on post-“cherry” developments over on Boil the Ocean.

This could be a cool series: “Skaters in Cars Looking at Spots.” The first edition is with Mike Anderson. The world desperately needs a Fred Gall one.

Kingpin put together a #listicle of ten great “no push” lines. Torey has two really good ones and Jason Spivey deserves some recognition for filming a “no push” part.

Leo Heinert’s intro part for Torro Skateboards is solid. He’s gotten way good over the years, and the kickflip into the knobbed bank at Fort Greene Park is one of the gnarliest things done at a New York spot in recent memory.

Route One Mag has an interview with one of the few Manhattan-born pro skaters.

In honor of its rebirth, the Green Diamond released a 20-minute B-sides reel.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: J.R. Smith was put on this earth to break the NBA’s “most threes attempted in a game” record, with 22. (He made 10 of them, by the way.) Also very happy the Knicks aren’t making the playoffs, so we can avoid all the 1999 playoff “8th seed, but we have a CHANCE!” montages. This team doesn’t deserve to be in the playoffs, and if you’re rooting for them to make it, you are rooting against the concept of America as a whole, plain and simple.

If you need further evidence of Puerto Rico having become the northeast’s preferred winter getaway, here it is. New York’s most productive skate crew just got back from there with a four-minute clip, and you can probably assume they set aside a handful of clips for whatever the sequel to Beef Patty is going to be. “Empanada” is via Johnny Wilson and co., and the third “New York dudes in Puerto Rico” clip from the past month-and-a-half. (Previously: Iron Claw in P.R., Quartersnacks in P.R.)

Puerto Rico trips are not particularly new, they’re just very #now. For older evidence, here’s the P.R. section from the 2003 Zoo York tour video, City of Killers. Zered does a snowboard trick but on a skateboard in it, and there’s a Robert Lopez-Mont intro part from his brief stint on Zoo. Even though dude may be firmly planted in skate industry exile a la C-Fro, there wasn’t an hour that passed during our trip where one of the locals didn’t say “Oh, Robert did so-and-so insane trick here.” Just look at the hubba at the end of this clip…

Supreme has the new Alltimers decks available, in addition to a restock of Snackman tees, which are sold out online and won’t be back on for quite some time. (New ash grey colorway!) Labor still has the Jesus piece deck available online, though you’re out of luck if you’re trying to skate an Oscar winner.

Perhaps the greatest “lost clip” to ever surface online: Mike Carroll doing the most exemplary kickflip and frontside flip possible at the Brooklyn Banks in 1995.

Iron Claw Skates in Puerto Rico. What’d we tell you?

Zered is having a part in the new Transworld video. He’s been on a tear lately. Here’s another clip of him at the newly cellar door-ified House of Vans too. (“Have you seen the new Transworld video, Outlines?” = the 2010s’ “Have you seen the new Transworld video, Subtitles?” for the dyslexics.)

Speaking of Transworld…if any of the editors read this website, let it be known that it’s kinda sorta frustrating when you guys give Jake Johnson second billing in a clip that he has one trick in :( Wes Kremer footage is always nice though. Since the trick in question is a no comply, all aspiring no compliers should consult the GX1000 Vine for further examples of proper form on loop.

You’d think people would run out of new ways to skate Love Park, but the ollie-ollie-ollie nose manual line that Nik Stain does is cool. The hour-long Skate Jawn video is online in full, by the way.

NY Skateboarding has a new interview with Steven Cales.

Kent Uyehara talks about the original FTC shop team, and the whereabouts of Drake Jones, a topic that gets brought up all the time despite Chrome Ball having done the research on that one years ago. (Only omission: “Do you ever get frustrated with the meteoric rise of a prominent Canadian with the same name?”)

#TBT on a Monday: Traffic reboot teamrider, Luke Malaney’s part from Chapman’s Short Ends video (2007). Features guest tricks of the #emergingblackcelebity before he emerged as a celebrity.

72 Hours in San Juan

Going to San Juan for skateboard-related reasons isn’t exactly new. Mainland skateboard companies have been going there for years. However, it does seem that Puerto Rico trips have been occurring with greater frequency for northeasterners recently. Miami, the go-to northeastern getaway for someone uninterested in a L.A. trip, has been getting more blown out and tougher to skate. Unless you’re packing ten dudes in a van and driving 1,200 miles, travel to P.R. is not much different: an extra 45 minutes on a plane and roughly the same ticket price. As a result, you get to be on an island with warmer water, newer spots, fewer distractions, and best of all, you’re not in Florida.

San Juan is not very foreign. Everyone speaks English, your phone is going to work without any add-ons, there are Wal-Marts everywhere, and they use American currency. “Miami but tighter” became a common description throughout the trip. (That’s only pertinent to the skateboard-concerning side of things. Miami is far better for a variety of other extracurricular endeavors.)
