20. Houston Street Construction Becomes the New Bank to Green Box

The first installment of this series concluded with a list of 2013’s best spots. Astute readers of QS should know that it reflected office favorites, and not all-encompassing New York skater favorites. We don’t ollie down what we cannot ollie up; professionals and “good” skateboarders abide by a far different creed. Last year, visitors were enamored with the green metal ledge in Harlem, until it mysteriously vanished in January. (Everyone was sick of seeing tricks on that thing anyway.)

Scrambling to find a fresh New York spot that would prove to sponsors that “I didn’t just get drunk and make out with girls with shitty tattoos the entire time I was there,” good skateboarders did what they do best: like, saw the world differently, dude. And so, you couldn’t sit for a minute on the Houston steps this past summer without seeing a pack of skateboarders cruise past, with their filmer towing a hundred-pound backpack ten feet behind them. With yesterday’s release of the new Zoo York vid, companies began an outpour of footage on obstacles that are otherwise the bane of every lower Manhattan driver’s existence.

Synths, Irony & Robots: A Chronicle of Daft Punk Music Supervision in Skate Videos

Every skate site was obligated to have a “Dill & AVE Off Alien”-post, and every website on the entire internet is required to mention the new Daft Punk album. Combined with the release of Kendrick Lamar’s debut last fall and next month’s Kanye album, we are in an eight-month rut of opinion onslaught from an unholy trio of annoying fanbases.

…but even skateboarders are talking about Daft Punk! Skaters previously only acknowledged electronic music when posting “wtf iz with dis song?” comments on video parts that dared to use it. And now they’re interested in dance music? Instead of giving an opinion about Random Access Memories like everyone else on the internet, here’s an abridged history of how Daft Punk, and in turn, electronic music as a whole, achieved acceptance in skate videos.

So, please note that this is a North American timeline. Accounting for European usage of electronic music adds another dimension entirely. Weekend Listening: Hopps Skateboards & DJ Ross One Present — ‘Keep It Moving Volume 1’

This will either be a triumphant soundtrack to the second Knicks playoff win in twelve years, or a consolation prize for a weekend sullied by a Paul Pierce step-back jumper with three seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Our friend Ross One — one-half of the duo behind the winter 2011 classic, The Notorious Party Boy Soundtrack — mixed up a bunch of funk and soul staples in collaboration with Jahmal Williams and his great skateboard company, Hopps. Aside from being a solid hour of the sort of music you’d hear in a Hopps clip and an array of sample sources, it’s a reminder of just how many great songs have gone un-used in skate clips. (It’s okay to leave the Big L alone sometimes, guys!) Is it actually possible that nobody skated to Aaron Neville “Hercules?” It feels like it should’ve been in three San Francisco-based skate parts by now. Provided the imaginary Nate Jones comeback we’re hoping for is under way, he should follow up his Real to Reel music supervision with it. Also, Guy Mariano should’ve skated to “Miracles” in Pretty Sweet.
