A 1995 Portral Into 2016

quim 5050

No matter how advanced things seem, fundamental artifacts remain timeless. When stuff gets too technical, too big and too hard to keep track of — simple, refined skating stands out amid the stair-counting. It’s part of the recipe behind today’s moment for small companies and slimmed-down trick lists.

Ride On is a 1995 Deluxe promo that doesn’t get the same nostalgic love as say, Non Fiction or Fucktards do. It resurfaced during a ATCQ #musicsupervision wormhole that turned into a Joey Bast wormhole once his Silver part ended.

The promo struck a chord for more reasons than the #pants. While it probably won’t incite the “come out today and still hold up”-hyperbole that was discussed last week, it does seem oddly current and in tune with what’s going on throughout skateboarding’s more refined palette today, particularly in New York. From Huf’s one-or-two push lines that include nothing more than 180s, trashcans, streetgaps and maybe a kickflip, to a time when a really good 360 flip off a bump was “enough” to end a section off with — it all came back with a vengeance as we began to drift away from the age of after-black hammers and taking five years to film a video.

Added bonuses are Quim beginning his reign as the greatest two-5050s-in-one-line practitioner ever, front of Union Square lines that wouldn’t look out of place if they were HD in a 2016 Johnny Wilson video, Ethan Fowler skating Pier 7 unlike anyone famous for skating Pier 7 would skate Pier 7, and Ryan Hickey doing a four-trick Astor line that’s about half as long as the 44-second YouTube compilation of all his footage.

Yo did TWS really just hint that The Storm 2 is in the works?

In 2012, it was “I’d rather watch Gino push.” In 2013, it was “I’d rather watch Busenitz skate a curb.” In 2014, it was “I’d rather watch Jahmal do a 5050.” In 2015, it’s “I’d rather watch a bunch of kids in Ethiopia skate than Chris Cole do some NBDs at the DC park.”

Pretty much every skateboarder outside of the Bay Area who knows about Andre Nickatina discovered Andre Nickatina through skate videos. SMLTalk gave a rundown of notable Nickatina #musicsupervision throughout skate video history.

Pretty rare that you see a New York clip in 2015 almost entirely filmed in Manhattan. Nice to see a lot of seldom-skated U.W.S. and Morningside spots.

Paych (or whatever) is now online in full.

Corey Rubin is my one friend who can skate bowls.

Anyone who started skating at least ~10 (or maybe less, who knows) years ago grew up with at least a couple Mike Blabac photos on their wall. This Chromeball interview with him is great, and gives the behind-the-scenes details on what we now consider some of the most iconic images of skateboarding. Also worth reading for any young skate photographers looking to be humbled by how good they have it in the digital era. That A.V.E. nollie crook revert sequence story is wild.

Jenkem has a bunch of behind the scenes photos from the Palace / Bronze video.

Yeah.

Huf doesn’t really flip his board anymore, just like Kevin Tierney ;)

The video that brought the concept of “oft-delayed S.V.A. skate video” to absurdly new heights released a twenty-minute B-roll clip, twenty-something years after the announcement of said video’s production: Outdated B-sides, 2007-2012.

Skaters are idiots.

Some quick vids“Subway Series” via the Mood NYC crew, and a Village Psychic bro cam clip edited to a relatable song about women repeatedly not understanding that you have a chauffeur. Live life.

QS Sports Desk: Anyone pretending like they know what’s going to happen in this series is lying. If it’s a one-point Game 7 decision, it won’t be surprising in the slightest. Also on the slim chance you missed it…J.R. Smith’s Game 4 entry.

Rest in Peace Ryan DeWitt.

Huf’s Favorite Photos

If you run a New York-based skate website for nearly ten years, it’d make sense to get Keith Hufnagel onboard for something along the line. Except there isn’t a ton of unchartered territory for an interview after the Epicly Later’d series or anything of that sort. Huf already had a Chromeball guest post, and this is not much more than a geographically constrained bite of that idea.

There aren’t a ton of proper “parts” from when Huf and that generation of skaters were growing up skating in New York, but a bunch of memorable photos. Here are Keith Hufnagel’s favorite New York skate photos, with a bit of commentary on each one.

Music, Money, Monday Links (on a Tuesday)

Back in town. Heard of two new spots already! Some of these links are old obvs.

Lucas Puig and friends at MACBA. That little kid rips.

After causing quite a few cringes and “Ooohhh” reactions at the Static 4 premiere, Orchard put the painful teaser for their new video, Stone Soup, online.

“Based on his Bay Area legacy and the fact that my personal affinity for Marcus in my youth had gone as far as the habitual wearing of a Starter T-shirt inspired by the Trilogy VHS that was effectively super glued in my VCR, I was nervous just to be around him.” FYI: This should be mandatory weekly viewing.

Yoooooooooo Huf’s in-and-out Banks wall line

Ever wonder how skateboards are made? Here’s a brief mini doc on that very subject from the crew at Chapman Skateboards.

Jason Dill talks about pants and his Photosynthesis part. “That’s a bad frontside noseslide.” (Why didn’t they discuss the recording of this call though?)

NY Skateboarding filmed the entire Q & A with Chris Carter and Duane Pitre from the Memory Screen event that happened in Brooklyn last week.

Jenkem has an interview with Kevin Tierney and Transworld has an interview and mini clip with Rob Gonyon. Always found it weird when people (and there are A LOT of them, not just Rob) lose interest in the NBA when the Knicks aren’t involved, thus depriving themselves of viewing actually *good* basketball. It’s like listening to Wu-Tang and turning the song off after U-God’s verse ends. Anyway, new Bronze video!

Cooper Winterson has a cool new mini video with all the young guns. Citibike wallies!

Happy rap music! (“There seems to be an inordinate amount of exclamation points.”)

Hopps has a quick “Welcome to the Team” Insta vid for Cyrus Bennett and a mini clip with Brian Clarke from the Battery Park L Ledges.

The Canadian Vans team goes to Boston, New York and Philadelphia.

Raekwon and Ghostface Lieberman.

QS Sports Desk: Hyped that the Sports Desk’s new favorite non-German player over 6′ 3 won the Finals MVP. Lebron must really hate the state of Texas.

Quartersnacks Is For Lovers

qs vanity plate

There’s officially a Quartersnacks-themed vanity plate on the streets of Los Angeles. We got Virginia down (#QSisforlovers), now we need the other 49 states. Maybe not Florida though…

Jerry, George and Kramer watch a sponsor me tape.

Dime rounded up a minute of the best flatground tricks ever done in the Dime Flatground Open: Masters Series, though oddly no Kalis or J.B. to be found. The tricks over the Love can and Newport fakie flip go without saying, but always been a fan of Kalis’ turnaround then 360 flip in Stevie’s Reason part (3:18).

You’re going to be seeing a lot of interviews with Bill Strobeck about “cherry” these next few months: Transworld has one and Live Skateboard Media has another one. (ICYMI: Here’s the one we did, though it came out before the video and had to avoid talking about certain things in detail, given our #spoileralert-sensitive culture.) There’s also some speculation on post-“cherry” developments over on Boil the Ocean.

Another LurkNYC “New York Times” throwaway reel.

This could be a cool series: “Skaters in Cars Looking at Spots.” The first edition is with Mike Anderson. The world desperately needs a Fred Gall one.

Kingpin put together a #listicle of ten great “no push” lines. Torey has two really good ones and Jason Spivey deserves some recognition for filming a “no push” part.

Leo Heinert’s intro part for Torro Skateboards is solid. He’s gotten way good over the years, and the kickflip into the knobbed bank at Fort Greene Park is one of the gnarliest things done at a New York spot in recent memory.

Route One Mag has an interview with one of the few Manhattan-born pro skaters.

In honor of its rebirth, the Green Diamond released a 20-minute B-sides reel.

Best #musicsupervision of any “New Yorkers in Puerto Rico” clip thus far.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: J.R. Smith was put on this earth to break the NBA’s “most threes attempted in a game” record, with 22. (He made 10 of them, by the way.) Also very happy the Knicks aren’t making the playoffs, so we can avoid all the 1999 playoff “8th seed, but we have a CHANCE!” montages. This team doesn’t deserve to be in the playoffs, and if you’re rooting for them to make it, you are rooting against the concept of America as a whole, plain and simple.

Quote of the Week: “Yo, you have chest hair, you’re too old to be in a product toss. It’s quiet for you.” — T-Bird

Because man, you deserve it.

Been saying this song would go great for an NBA postseason commercial ever since Pluto came out. Or at least a hell of a lot better than Will.i.am or whatever else they have been using.
