Happy New Year to everyone. 50 degrees today, 11 degrees tomorrow. This place is hosting a Superbowl next month? That should be interesting. We missed quite a bit while taking the past week off, so here’s a bit of a catch-up…

If you’ve been skating long enough, you may remember this Josh Kalis commercial running on MTV, Comedy Central, etc. Though not the highest distinction, it might be the best mass audience skateboarding commercial ever made, if only because of the two kickflips and 360 flip he does in it. Filmed around Water Street and midtown, with a rare trick on the haven’t-been-skateable-in-15-years handrails by Radio City (A.K.A. “Joey’s Sculpture” from THPS2.) There’s an alternate version a cop chasing him somewhere too, which they talk about in this old Transworld article.

Speaking of which, there’s a new Kalis interview on Jenkem.

Ripped Laces counts down the best skate shoes of 2013: #s10-6 here and #s 5-1 here. Going to have to agree on the Gatos at #1. Beyond their functionality, that shoe is the most Gino-esque Nike shoe ever made. Yes, even moreso than the actual Gino tennis-inspired shoe they released in 2012. When you look down at your feet in them, it gets easy to trick yourself into thinking you look way cooler on a skateboard than you actually do, because those are the shoes Gino would skate in. There’s also a chill commercial with Connor Champion for the Lunar Gato out today.

Some dudes made the odd decision of going skating in midtown on New Years Eve.

Tween favorites and Leo Gutman aside, Westgate is the only legit Ishod withstanding case you could make for Best Skater of the Past 12 Months. (We’re not saying “SOTY” anymore to avoid any “There’s politics behind it bro!” proclamations from those privy to the obvious. BSOTP12M strives to be as objective as possible.)

His new Emerica part is obviously closer to the Gravity end of things than any plain old video part. However, Westgate’s superhumanness always gets brought back to earth because he does the best looking, most un-Battle of the Berrics-homogenized flip tricks of any young skater today. The terrain he does them on is sorta irrelevant; every part this dude puts out leads to a Kalis comparison, even if the spots they typically skate are nothing alike. Distinct-looking flip tricks are relatable because everyone knows the feeling of “Wow, that was a good one” on a trick they otherwise do a hundred times a day. It does not matter how much lower the bar orange cone may be set in our individual cases. (But maybe it does help that Westgate’s best examples aren’t done down stairs. Speaking of which, are there any #relevant stair skaters besides Reynolds, Herman and Forrest Edwards anymore?)

Monday Links on a Tuesday for the second week in a row.

Check out Philly Santosuosso’s mini New York part for Politic Skateboards. Eighty percent of it was filmed within maybe a ten-block radius. For those who don’t know, Philly runs Humidity Skateshop in New Orleans. DGK did a sick video about the shop and crew a few weeks ago.

For whatever reason, Shorty’s decided to start making skateboards again (don’t Skate Mafia and Shake Junt seem to split the space that Shorty’s would occupy, had it survived the post-Muska era?), but at least their iconic Horty shirt never lost relevance, as evidenced by this Westchester, NY-based montage. A notable QS associate also kinda met his wife because of that shirt. An undisputed classic.

If you live in/near the East Village, you knew 12th & A has semi been back for over a week. Due to Instagram, it’s now common knowledge for all. So, here’s the first known clip from 12th & A version 6.0. Is filming a lo-fi viewfinder the new VX1000?

…or wait, now that Instagram promos are a “thing,” has the iPhone solidified its position as the new VX1000?

And if there’s a new VX1000, what’s the new TRV900? A Galaxy S4? Until we figure that out, Billy Rohan has been hitting the streets with a TRV, and coming out with “Illumingnarly” edits of standard New York weirdos and some skateboarding.

R.B. Umali breaks down a nineties-heavy top five tricks he’s ever filmed. All due respect to Kalis’ Newport fakie flip, but the kickflip from Peep This that R.B. filmed might edge it out, considering it’s maybe the best kickflip ever done. Also, Billy McFeely 5050ed the ledge Lennie Kirk boardslid.

BAM (the former best spot in Brooklyn), is hosting a skateboard-themed film series from September 6th through the 23rd. They’ll be showing everything from Gleaming the Cube, to This Ain’t California, to Waiting for Lightning, to Kids, and even Yeah Right! on a big screen. Taji Ameen interviewed George Gage, director of Skateboard starring Tony Alva, one of the first mainstream movies about skateboarding and the first in BAM’s series. (Related: The fifteen-minute short from 1966, The Devil’s Toy, is available online for free, and is one of the first films to depict skateboarding altogether. BAM will be screening it along with some related shorts later in the month. It was also the source material for the random shots of kids skating in the original Lurkers 2 promo.)

QS Sports Desk *Throwback* Play of the Week / Article Recommendation: As Knicks fans, it’s easier to remember Tracy McGrady as a past-his-prime cap-clearing piece than the guy responsible for things like this, but Bill Simmons makes a compelling case for his spot in the hall of fame over on Grantland.

Not the first time that we’re bummed over local TV programing changes: Despite the fact that Coming to America came out twenty-five years ago, and his only semi-recent output is admittedly an amazing Chapelle’s Show cameo, Pix 11 decided to give Arsenio Hall his own show at 11 P.M., moving Seinfeld reruns to 6:30 P.M. and midnight starting next week. Less of a reason to come home early.

10 Cent Deposit: The ‘Lost’ Josh Kalis Part

Someone ripped the Josh Kalis part that nobody knew about from 10 Cent Deposit, the 2004 shop video for Premier Skateshop in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The part seems to be from the same time period as The DC Video, since the switch frontside flip he does down the double-set also ended up in the bigger part. Much of the footage is “throwaway,” and likely would have never made the cut for a shoe company project, especially considering half of it is in a skatepark. But really, is there anything better than watching Kalis knock out five tricks on a Euro gap or skate a ramp to Triton barrier in sweatpants (more on that tomorrow)? For all the talk that gets thrown around on this site regarding the best flip tricks, there truly is only one dude for that throne, and it’s Kalis. (Also is he wearing red Dunks in some of the footage, or is that a DC model with something that looks like a swoosh on it?)
