Party at 8

Just left Columbia. Photo by Matt Roberge.

QS x DGK coming next month.

Cee Lo, the new one from LurkNYC, is great. Sick spots (probably the most astute prop grate finders working today), a soundtrack sure to please anyone who’s ever left a “you guys actually like this?”-comment on a Quartersnacks YouTube video, and an awesome ender part from John Shanahan (above) that will be on repeat for the foreseeable future. Fakie bigspin manny line was a real crowd pleaser :) Also, those security guards at the gold rail on 52nd Street might be the worst in the city…

New interview with Gino Iannucci in Italy’s Brief Glance mag. Starts on page 37.

The 550 Wheels promo begins with what’s basically a full, new Ron Deily part. (There’s a junk spot successor already?) Also has a Kevin Taylor appearance.

Max Palmer Presents: A new barrier at the Bushwick Blue Park.

An iPhone video from Jesse Alba, a Blackberry (yeah) clip from E.J., and a handycam video from Rob Harris.

John Valenti’s Local Express video is online in full. New full Caddo part.

“What advice can you give someone wanting to work in skateboarding?” “Whatever it is you want to do, just start doing it on your own. Shoot photos how you want, film how you want, put up your videos, reach out to the companies you want to work for…” Skateboard Story has a solid interview with Transworld‘s Blair Alley about still working at one of the remaining print publications left in skateboarding.

SMLTalk chronicles the stylistic evolution of Robert Welsh.

Matt Nordess at the top-10 worst ledge and less bad places for Labor Skateshop.

QS faves, Budapest’s Rios Crew, goes to Croatia.

An interview with everyone’s fave Scandinavian beast, Hjalte Halberg.

Couple quick New York clips in Flo Mirtain’s new part for Jenkem.

Is riding over the full length of a car a NBD?

The odds being stacked against company comebacks never stops anyone from trying.

A skate tour through Alaska with Brock, Worrest, etc.

It’ll always be Pigeon Shit Double-Set to me ;)

Turn audio on for maximum effect.

If you ask 100 people to give you the twenty best Young Thug songs of 2015, you’re going to get 100 different mixes. Provided you don’t want to sift through five thousand songs, Hotbox Social did a pretty good job of condensing his past twelve months into ninety minutes of music — though you’d probably wanna include “Dome,” “Numbers,” “Bang Bang,” “Pacifier” — actually no, it’s sorta impossible…

QS Sports Desk: Going to switch it up a bit this week and link an article. I thoroughly enjoyed this new interview with Real Sports‘ Bryant Gumbel. His whole “as you age, you care less and less about what a bunch of 20-year-olds are doing”-thing is something I often try to remind [30+] people pontificating on the [non-existent] “death” of skate videos. Sk8 videos r 4 the youths man.

Quote of the Week: “He showed up to the skatepark in a cashmere poncho.” — Dom Travis

Still some beanies [and assorted sizes of fall goods] left in the webstore, even though it’s going to be seventy degrees on Christmas Eve

Day zero and beyond ♥ TF @ 1: Ten Years of Quartersnacks available now.

HD video blog #16 from Johnny Wilson and friends.

Los Angeles-based video blog from Andrew (?!?!) Wilson?!?!

Bob Shirt’s ten-minute video interview with Joey Alvarez is earnest and informative. He runs through the history of little-known companies like C.R.E.A.M and Metropolitan, shares some Banks stories, and talks about Keith Harrison — whose twenty-year-old Seaport line predicted an entire sub-sect of L.E.S. park street style.

The Riverside Park resurgence is already in full swing.

New B-sides clip from the Report Potholes / In Crust We Trust squad. #jersey

Someone remixed all of Tiago’s [park] footage from the D.C. tour video, which includes what is more than likely the greatest switch pop shove it ever done in human history.

Here’s a promo for the Bailar video that includes Shredmaster Keith shredding around Soho. Video due out next month. Looks like a good time.

“People in smaller cities with abandoned ball/tennis courts seem like the have the more fun skating than anyone in Los Angeles or New York.” — Roc

On that same note…new one from the Sex Hippies squad in Western Mass.

I’m guessing you probably caught on to the new #streetlife-heavy F.A./Hockey clip? Pretty sure Ben K. is the first one to ever slide that rail off the eight-stair at CBS.

When the recent past isn’t as recent as you think: Bobby Worrest recaptured. Back 3 curb cut + backside 180 switch crook from Right Foot Forward is an all-time great.

Five trick fix from switch and nollie pop king, Brendan Carroll.

Thanksgiving at the Bushwick Blue Park

Menace is back! …in enamel pin form.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: We’re big on assists at the Sports Desk. Sad this guy is spending the foreseeable future in playoff spot-chasing territory.

Quote of the Week: “If English was my first language, I’d be a famous comedian.” — Chuck MVP

^^^Best sports rap song in who knows how long, but that’s a biased opinion from someone who discovered NBA basketball during peak Penny/Shaq Orlando era ;)

Float Off the Earth in Designer

This one is pretty good too.

The QS webstore is now live with fall merch. There likely won’t be any restocks on any of this stuff, so grab it while you can. Thanks as always for the support. Also available from these fine shops, although it might not be available at some of the European retailers until later this week or next ♥♥♥

Cops are awesome. Not skating there for a while…

Maybe L.E.S. clip of the year. (Double-set contest clips don’t count.)

Ollie onto the top, TOP circle at Seward Park is insane.

I’d rather watch Gino push than get old.”

Even though the rumors have been going for years, the Love Park redesign looks like it’s becoming an increasing reality. It’s nice that they’re turning it into a grassy crack smoking campsite with a big toilet in the middle.

Remember Chad Knight? For whatever reason, decided to give his Shetler Show episode a chance. There are some interesting bits, namely having to do with the late nineties skate boom. People can call companies like Osiris “corny” in hindsight, but we’re still talking about them more than some of the “cool” stuff from when we were growing up. All the corny shit means a lot in life. Think about who’s song you’re more likely to hear at a party in 2015: 50 or Ja? Yo I miss Yung Berg.

The Meteoric Rise of the Palace Wayward Boys Choir.

Leo Gutman (2013 Q.S.S.O.T.Y. winner) sightings in this mostly New York iPhone clip.

Always hyped to see footage of Philly Santosuosso and New Orleans in general.

Just in time for winter: Ripped Laces on the resurgence of skating in Timberlands.

Dude, we, like, fully gave up on the Knicks after they traded picks for Bargnani and realized nothing will ever change. Being a bandwagon Warriors fan these past three years has turned out great. (Thanks for the plug.)

There’s no shortage of high praise on the Stretch and Bobbito documentary going around, but as an addendum to that, you should listen to the two-hour Juan Ep podcast with the two of them. They make a point of not spoiling anything in the film itself. Bobbito not knowing this was a Dogg Pound beat or the context of the song is the most hilariously east coast shit ever. That song was in a clip, btw ;)

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: The entire highlights video of Magic-Thunder from Friday. I witnessed a $50 bet go down this past week on Russell Westbrook being league MVP. He’ll probably finish top three, but it doesn’t matter because he’s actually the greatest basketball player in the history of skateboarding.

Quote of the Week: “Seeing clips of Justin Bieber skating makes me want to start skateboarding again.” — Thando

She’s better than you, and has better style.

Sorta inevitable that Sheckler would meet the “why the fuck you lying”-guy, who was the unofficial soundtrack of Labor Day weekend.

Some photos of the soon-to-be-completed skatepark in East Williamsburg, which is developer-speak for “not not sorta Bushwick.” (It’s off the Graham L.) Looks on the mellower side of the skatepark spectrum, a la Canarise.

The fakie hardflip over the block at J Kwon should put an end to the age-old debate.

The most important piece of #skate #journalism in at least thirty years: Jenkem interviewed the iconoclast who tried to ollie the thirteen-flat-thirteen in the rain…which of course, is one of the five greatest tricks to never happen.

Thanks to perhaps the most heavily reblogged trick of 2015 (and maybe a surging interest in Canadian exports), Spencer Hamilton earned a place in the hearts of many who otherwise forget that Canada often produces superior skateboarders to America. Supra took notice, and made a “best of” part for him to bring anyone else up to speed.

Rare in-office week for the QS Fashion Desk, in preparation for #NYFW: SMLTalk runs down the greatest headwear choices in skate video history and here’s an an interview with Fergus Purcell, one of the principal designers behind Palace.

Vice has an #uplifting mini-doc about the emergence of skateboarding in Palestine.

Bronze’s “ask me anything” department is right — it doesn’t matter what crew “shitted on” whatever other crew in New York, because New York skateboarding never fully recovered from Dave Mayhew’s stay here in 1999:

The backside flip off the big bank over the police barrier is legitimately still the 8th or 10th best trick done in city limits after Westgate’s 2x ollies on Canal Street, Kalis’ fakie flip at Newport, Jake’s wallride, Rieder’s impossible, and a bunch of stuff Zered has done. Also, forgetting that part was a massive oversight here.

That being said, Pyramid County’s Ripplescape video is solid, and features a handful of the more insane things to happen here in recent months (pull-in nosegrind at Columbus Park, frontside flip the Seaport bench, etc.) Way more enjoyable than any other U.S. tour vid in recent history.

“In the span of just about a week, Boil the Ocean internet web blog was able to compile an array of image-damaging content features and fiery remarks that reflect poorly on the extreme sport that once seemed on pace to unseat baseball as the sport of the future.” Wipe your lens Wilson, damn.

Eli Reed doing some manuals, and some bro cam footage from the Mira Conyo squad.

Spot Updates: The downtown Brooklyn post office spot is now knobbed.

Quote of the Week: “Having a French bulldog is like buying a used Jaguar. It’s the best and you’ll love the thing, but it’s going to cost you a ton of money.” — Barnes

Enjoy that school year y’all ;)

Still in Miami

jp

Thanks to everyone who grabbed something from the webstore this past week. We’re just getting caught up with orders now, so please hold any “Where’s my stuff”-emails until at least the middle of the week. Still some sizes in hoodys, shorts and jerseys left, plus all sizes of the tees except the Vacation one :)

HD video blog #10 via Johnny Wilson. Springtime is nice.

Part two of the Peter Smolik and Brandon Turner Weekend Buzz is now live. He hates food pics. “Motherfucker, do I look like Slimer to you?”

Sort of on that same note, can’t recall an interview that really elaborated on just how much money the average “A-list” pro skateboarder made in the early-2000s as Jenkem’s new one with Kenny Getz re: “the CKY era.”

Someone on Slap scanned the entire Olson TWS cover interview in a readable resolution. All New York photos. He does darkslides now.

Wenning was stressed out filming for Photosynthesis ten days before deadline.

After numerous false starts at digitizing their archive, Know Skate and TWS announced that every 411VM segment will be available via an app by the end of this year. (ICYMI: Somewhat relevant old QS post.)

Haven’t seen much from this dude as of late, but glad he’s still putting out solid parts: New one from Austin Kanfoush. Boardslide S.F. 3-up-3-down is super chill.

Cool five-minute montage from the NJ Skateshop squad.

NY Skateboarding has a bit more info on the skatepark being built in place of the Fat Kid Spot. And yes, they should keep the name “Fat Kid Spot” for it, with the green Parks Department leaf under the name and all. Don’t forget that there’s also supposed to be a new park built in Harlem for the summer, too. (Even though #lenox4ever.)

SMLTalk on the music supervision of THPS, the soundtrack of your youth.

Live has a web premiere of “Grapevine,” a ten-minute, largely New York-based video with quick VX/night footage-heavy #Japanese ‘n #French #vibez.

This was a cool read. These “20 Years of Girl / Chocolate” interviews tend to all go down similar lines of questioning, but it feels like there aren’t a ton of Jeron Wilson interviews out there, so…

The first-ever Vans video, Propeller, is premiering in New York on May 1st, at 10 P.M., right by Columbus Circle on 62nd and Broadway.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Can’t imagine J.R. Smith being a person younger NBA players should be taking much advice from, unless he’s relaying proper post-4 A.M. club etiquette… Get well soon, Chris Copeland. Also on the topic of former Knicks, glad to see Galinari shining post-injury.
