Frog Skateboards, Stingwater, Heineken & Hjalte Halberg Present — Came to Paris For Nothing

After millions of dollars spent on airfare and accommodations, nearly a full day of traveling over sea and land, and much meticulous planning that it takes to get dozens of boys across the Atlantic, we were in Paris asking the immortal question that guides our lives: “Where are we gonna skate today?”

About 70% of the way through the trip, Nolan revealed that the only reason he swam to Paris (he’s not a big fan of planes) was for the purpose of skating the famous colored manual pad spot seen in a myriad of skate videos growing up. Much to his dismay, when those “where are we gonna skate today?”-convos were taking place and the spot would get mentioned, the proceeding thoughts were familiar…

“I think that’s still under scaffolding?”

“Are there other spots around there?”

“It’s not as good as it looks in videos.”

“We gotta take a train to get there…I kinda wanted to push around today.”

See, it doesn’t matter where you are, or how many new spots you haven’t grown bored of skating you’re surrounded by. The struggle is real no matter where you go. The only difference is you might not be able to kick it with Sophie that day.

Gonna throw in an early left field link, but the Pass~Port in Greece edit is the best (i.e. watched it more than once) trip edit that’s dropped during 2018’s Winter Getaway Footage Dump Season (yes, I know Australia is in the southern hemisphere.) It’s always nice to learn of some nice new songs in a skate edit too :)

Even if it is in the Times + includes the phrases “daredevils” and “neoliberal training grounds,” Jeff Ihaza’s feature on how skateparks came to be understood, accepted, and built passes the litmus test of linkable traditional news outlet skate coverage.

Noah Johnson’s GQ profile of the GX1000 crew does as well. (Yes, Noah skates.) “It’s frustrating shit when you almost die.” Yeah, dying seems pretty wack.

While the Times may think we “won,” we also lost one of the best ledges in lower Manhattan this past week. The deknobbed ledge at Seaport that was more-or-less a go over the past year-plus is now knobbed not only for grinds, but for manuals too!

Weckingball is the latest guest on The Bunt.

Normally don’t care about “oh, so-and-so already skated to that song”-isms — especially in this fickle footage economy — but “Blowing Up Fast” holds a special place in many hearts. This guy does a line at Three Up Three Down, hypes up P-Rod, and has never seen Baker Has a Deathwish, which is totally fine because it’s almost ten-years-old now goddamn.

And on that note! Village Psychic interviewed Josh Stewart about the unwritten rules of #musicsupervision and editing gimmicks in skate videos.

After the release of Belly of the Beast, Allan Danze retired from skateboard filmmaking (because he was beginning to GRoE: Getting Ready tO Evolve.)

After the release of Spirit Quest, Colin Read retired from skateboard filmmaking (because, you probably suspected, he was beginning to GRoE.)

And as you may also already know, Stop Fakin’ 3 will be Smalls’ final video.

He is about to GRoE into a new chapter of life. Daniel was merely a brief spiritual guide on this vast journey.

GRoE-th is not for everybody. Daniel will be the first to tell you that people will misconstrue you GRoEing into convenient categories that their brains can easily process. The Bloby videos are still the QS office’s favorite thing going. “Zdroopy,” their new one, is magic. Vince’s front nose 270 out is pure beauty, Karl Salah’s lines are always poetry, and DREWWWWWWW, Franco + Daniel Kim have cameos. No Hjalte tho :(

And the Pop boys also came through with a rad Paris edit that a) avoids a lot of the city’s most oft-skated spots, and b) oddly features a ton of underground footy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
