Italian Ledges

Spots: Midtown Manhattan — Midtown East

Update — Fall 2011:

Half of the spot is blocked off by scaffolding. You can skate the outer platform, and the shorter ledge. The scaffold actually blocks the security camera, so ideally, it might buy you some more time.

Spot:

Like most eastside office building plazas, this place is usually desolate after 6 P.M., so you do not have to worry about dodging pedestrians or having people sit all over the ledges fairly early on into the evening. It contains a foot-and-a-half high marble ledge running alongside a three stair with no end. Parallel to it, is another ledge of the same height running along the same set of steps, only it’s about three-and-a-half feet in length, with a slick top making bluntslides, lipslides, etc. possible. This ledge is a part of a large marble platform which extends towards the end of the block. It is about three-and-a-half feet wide, thirty feet long and starts out at only a foot-and-a-half and height and gets to be a foot higher towards its end. It can be skated as a ledge, manual pad or just a platform off of which you can set up garbage cans at the end to gap over.

Bust — ♦♦♦♦ / Very Likely: The security cameras face everything there is to skate, so odds are typically against you, but people have been known to get lucky and get in a twenty minute to half-hour session before security comes out.

Location: 49th Street and Third Avenue. Take the E, V or 6 train to 53rd Street -Lexington Avenue. Skate east for one block until you hit Third Avenue, make a right, and skate south for four blocks until you reach 49th Street.
