Jacob Riis Projects

Spots: Downtown Manhattan — Chinatown, East Village & L.E.S.

Spot: One of those spots that has been around forever, but only recently began seeing a handful of video coverage. The main thing here is a curved, almost half-circle painted concrete ledge. The approach requires a bit of a weave in, but people have managed to pull most tricks over it, so the runway is definitely manageable. The edge is pretty crisp, and not chunked up. The rollerbladers usually keep it heavily waxed, so double-check the surface to avoid any deadly slip-outs. Throughout the basketball court, there are some higher ledges, some of which are thin enough for boardslide and lipslide tricks.

Bust – ♦ / Rare: You will not get kicked out of here. The rollerbladers from the projects might try to fight you though.

Location: Inside the projects on 12th Street and Avenue D. Take the L to First Avenue. Skate two blocks south on First Avenue, make a left, and skate five blocks east into the buildings. It will be in the middle, next to the basketball courts.
