Spots: Brooklyn — Downtown & Fort Greene

Spot: Up until recently, Fort Greene Park did not have a single thing to skate, unless you count a photogenic ledge with a fifteen-foot-long runway for anything. A renovation of the surface surrounding the park’s main monument on the top of the hill yielded a new concrete floor, and the possibility of skating a spot that had otherwise been a “if only the ground wasn’t horrible” type of place in the past.
The monument sits on a smooth platform that is about two-feet high. On top of the platform, is another ledge in equal height, with ends on each side. Also, the platform itself gives way to a three-and-a-half foot gap to give way for a set of three steps that can be skated as a ledge-to-ledge or ledge-to-grind gap.
Considering you need to ollie up a two-foot platform every time you try a trick, the spot is quite tiring after a long session, so bring a few bottles of water with you, because there are no stores in the middle of the park.
Bust — ♦♦ / Occasional: The Parks Department typically leaves the park after 5 P.M. on weekdays, and is not present on weekends, so those would be the best times to get a session in.
Location: Fort Greene Park is located on DeKalb Avenue, next to Long Island University and Brooklyn Hospital. The actual skate spot in Fort Greene Park is located at the tallest monument in the park, at the highest point within the park, so you can see it as soon as you enter. Its a bit of a climb, but nothing too far. Take the B, M, Q or R train DeKalb Avenue and skate east on DeKalb for five or six blocks. The park will be on your left side.
