Speak Softly & Carry A Big Snack

Congrats to Mr. Nick Michel for winning the 2024 Quartersnacks Cup 🏆 and to everyone who came out on Saturday afternoon. Hoping to make this an annual event, so see everyone next year :) Full recap vid will go live later this week.

The Rent Is Too Damn High is a KCDC Skateshop video by Abi Teixeira, released in commemoration of the shop closing up its N 3rd Street location after having been a fixture in Williamsburg for two decades — long before the neighborhood was what you know it as today. Features a wide net of KCDC’s riders throughout the years. KCDC is continuing online operations as they look toward the future.

Labor’s Brooklyn location is having a big sale as they consolidate down to just the Manhattan location. Be sure to check their IG for abridged BK store hours before you make the trek though.

Maybe it’s the interview in the middle, but this has big 2000’s video magazine New York montage-vibes (yes, once upon a time, that was a rare thing for #skatemedia): PFP videographer Mike Sassano has a ten-minute New York montage over on the Transworld site with footage from Jeremy Murray, Matt Militano, Niels Bennett and more.

Wooooo!!! We’re back baby! East Village dollar slice joint is back to selling 99 cent slices! Woooooooo! Siri, play “Dreams and Nightmares!”

On the opposite end of the Tompkins food pyramid: The Avenue A Juicy Lucy, which rivals perhaps only Hawa on East Broadway for highest volume of acai bowls sold to skateboarders, is shutting down due to vandalism at that location :(

“The wood goes from Canada to China, then back to America to the warehouse, from there to the distribution in Europe and then to the shops. And every player in between, including distributors, wants to earn something from the board.” Solo has an interesting deep dive on something so obvious, yet so elusive: how are skateboards really made?

There’s literally one New York trick in the Australia x NZ team New Balance video that dropped on Friday, and it’s a 10/10 impossible over the uphill bump-to-bar outside the Montrose L, which, up until recently, was a quintessential “if only it weren’t uphill…”-spot. Apparently, skateboarding has evolved past caring.

Kicked Out of the Bar By the Swedish Military

Lucien Clarke in the Financial District by Mike Heikkila 📷 for 2001 Mag

We have our first one-spot video of 2024! Kurt Havens filmed a video entirely at the Abraham Lincoln statue in Prospect Park to show the world how much joy and creativity could be extracted from an innocuous patch of smooth stone in the middle of a big, green park. It has been added to the QS One-Spot Part Map 📍🐢

“The ConEd Banks sit quietly near the entrance to a mysterious 300-acre parcel of land that has been a site of energy, pollution, and controversy for over 100 years.” Village Psychic wrote the history of the ConEd Banks, which has a strong crossover with the New York hardcore scene of the 1980s. (Before anyone asks, yes we have looked into doing a “Favorite Spot” with Zered about it, but the consensus seemed to be that the footy was too scattered.)

Paris De Noche is the new video from Naquan Rollings filmed in New York, Philly and Paris, with standout clips from Jahmir Brown and Carl Aikens.

Switch Flip: The Movie (Dir. Salomon Cardenas, 2023)

As discussed on here two weeks ago, 2023 was the year of the switch flip. And rather than blithely asking your friends to “do a switch flip” — as so many of our colleagues had during those trying 365 days — Salomon Cardenas documented the efforts of all those who came within the path of that request.

Switch flips are unique because they are one of skateboarding’s great equalizers. Switch heels? Nobody is “okay” at switch heels. You’re either Tyshawn Jones or they’re rolling on the floor and you’re shocked when you happen to land on one playing defense in S-K-A-T-E. Whereas with switch flips, there’s a 7% chance you have a better one than your favorite skater. For example, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that Mason Silva is the best skater in any regular ol’ skate video that features Mason Silva. In Switch Flip: The Movie, he has maybe, like, the 53rd best switch flip in it.

Oski? Omg.

Needed This! — Jeff Cecere’s ‘This Is A Window’ Video Is Now Live

Just as Mind How You Go served as a soothing reprieve from Skateboard Oscars Season™ last December, Jeff Cecere‘s This Is A Window is the comfort-viewing we all need right now. Still got a queue of S.O.T.Y. contender parts since the last Top 10 got filed, but this was an immediate click and watch-through-the-whole-way experience. (Raise your hand if there are any 4-5 minute parts from the past few months that still took two sittings to get through ✋)

Jeff & co. are in that proverbial “window” (sorry, too easy), where each video compounds in quality from the last one. Both the skating and the craftsmanship behind the video are already somehow greater than they were in the already-great Mind How You Go. It’s a phenomenon we all witnessed while watching sequential videos from Bronze, Johnny & co. and the Duplex dudes over the years — which makes it all the more fitting that pretty much all of them come together under one umbrella in this one.
