No thinktank in #modern #skateboarding has changed the way people skate via Instagram as much as the Blobys have. They’re like the French New Wave of skateboard Instagram dude. After a Vince-based IG mix a few weeks back, someone put together a full, fifteen minute mix of all [most?] of their IG videos.

“Whether he knew it or not, a Bowie song in a skate video was more than just another song in the credits ━ you had to fucking earn that song.” Can’t say another artist’s passing has ever resulted in such an outpour of reflection from skate media outlets.

New Pete Eldridge footage! New J.B. Gillet footage! The Cliché team in Paris, unfortunately sans Lucas. Despite having seen that Créteil brick bank spot in videos for two-plus decades, there hasn’t been really much footage of people skating it like a halfpipe (way harder than it looks tbh.) In an age of “four video parts in a year,” overexposure is easy. Just as there were montage heroes in the video magazine era (who you were hard-pressed to find more than 45-seconds of consecutive footage from), favorite skaters now thrive on the explore page. Scarcity breeds value, and fifteen-second samplings leave you wanting more than two-song parts. Brandon Biebel elevated himself into numerous people’s favorite skater status this year off Instagram alone — despite having been around ~15 years. I was at a skatepark in Chicago earlier this fall where grown-ups were literally in shock that they were watching @jscott_handsdown skate IRL, and mulling about whether they’d seem too crazy asking for a photo with him.

Most stateside people were up on the Blobys since Café Clope dropped last year. Since then, barring a quick part here or a remix video there, the majority of their output and ascent to being the most recognizable Parisians on skateboards, has lived on IG.

A random guy on YouTube (“MrManeBeast”) came through with a serviceable IG comp of all of them. Keep in mind that the skating stops at the 5:48 mark, where the video turns into a Fetty Wap / anime mash-up, making it feel like the dude taped his Instagram comp over an old VHS tape.

The Warschauer Benches are on the shortlist of the funnest spots I’ve ever skated, and they’re nothing more than a better version of the Newport blocks from ~15 years ago. Kingpin has a full feature on their creation and history. Amazing how the formula for a perfect skate spot is no more sophisticated than decent ground + wooden benches + metal, and how often that goes ignored.

Isle’s Vase video is premiering on Thursday, November 19 at 8 P.M. and Paul Young’s Bleach video is premiering on Wednesday, November 25 at 8 P.M. Guess what theater? If you guessed the Imax on 68th Street, then you guessed wrong.

Did you know Fully Flared premiered eight years ago to the day? Been a slow couple weeks around here — which is strange because there’s no shortage of motivational Khaled interviews to inspire productivity. Jk, sorting shops out with the merch has eaten up a good bit of time. Your local shop should have all the gear by now, and the webstore launches on Monday at midnight (like, as in Sunday night.) We should be returning to regular scheduled nerdery next week :)

Below is a two-week-late Paris update. For whatever reason, there were five million people from New York out there at the same time, all due to various circumstances. Brought the camera out on two of the days, and this is what came of it. Didn’t make much sense to be the fifth guy with a camera out yaknow? The rest of the time was spend watching the hours go by at République / the greatest hang out that exists in modern skateboarding, minus some downtime for the most immature Louvre visit in the museum’s history.

You should go to Paris, it’s great. Have a good weekend and be safe on Halloween ;)

The Only 5050 Kickflip That Ever Mattered

Even in 2015, there’s a commemorative éS block at Le Dome. It honors the millions of dollars in skate tourism the company brought to France these past fifteen years.

It seems like after every trip to Europe, the first order of business back at the QS office is to reconcile with Menik Mati. While every critical adult skate nerd writes it off, that video really planted the childhood seed for our European travel bug. Some kids wanted to go to California and skate a schoolyard; we wanted to go to Bercy.

Is there a spot on earth where one of the best tricks done on it was legitimately a 5050 kickflip? Maybe a curb in front of some 12-year-old’s house in Alaska? Noseslide shuv-its, willy grinds, varial flips up until just recently, 5050 kickflips — all of these tricks begin getting phased out halfway through high school. They’re kid tricks. “I’ve never done a flip-out trick — well, besides a 5050 kickflip — but that doesn’t count.”

So could you believe that a 5050 kickflip ranks as a peak achievement at one of the most iconic spots in all European #sk8 #fantasy? (Lord knows why, not like any of us can skate anything besides the three stairs there…)
